This week... FotR extended (with my little sister, after reading it to her). Goonies (twice, including the commentary). Interestingly, Sean Astin plays the lead in this while playing the sidekick in LotR. It might be my favorite movie ever. Despicable Me (at the the urging of my sister). Not as good a cartoon as TS3, but still entertaining.
when i get back from vacation, hopefully I'll get to see that Inception movie everyone's raving about.

Despicable Me. Steve Carrell is very talented and there was a good voice cast in general... but I felt like I'd seen a lot of the gags before, so some of it felt a bit tedious. I did like the premise of rooting for a villian against another villian, though.

This was pretty much my reaction. I liked it alright, but it didn't measure up to the other animated films I've seen this year.

Bus Stop. Ugh, I can't BELIEVE Don Murray got an Oscar nomination for this. I've never seen a more obnoxious performance or a more loathsome character. Oh, but I hated him. And of course he got everything he wanted in the end.

Gake no Ue no Ponyo, first viewing
It's Princess Mononoke meets The Little Mermaid, with kids.
I really enjoyed this movie, actually. It's incredibly imaginative, full of the anthropomorphisms and fantastic creatures that Ghibli is known for. The characters are fun and believable, the colors are vibrant and beautifully hand-painted in this era of computer-rendered animation, and the atmosphere is one of non-stop fun.
Perhaps most importantly, Ponyo is admirably paced throughout, and the ending neatly ties everything up without seeming like it came out of nowhere. I was very glad to see that, since dragging on unnecessarily and ending lamely are problems which plagued Miyazaki's work in the past.
As an added bonus, as a movie targeted to a younger audience Ponyo uses a simpler subset of the Japanese language, and I was able to understand a decent amount even without subtitles. I don't know if there are any other aspiring Japanese speakers on the Phorum, but I appreciated it.
I wholeheartedly recommend this movie to children and adults alike.

Dinner for Schmucks
What a godawful movie. It's in contention for The Happening as worst movie I've ever paid money for. In fact, it's so terrible it sours my memory of its excellent French predecessor, The Dinner Game.

I saw Dinner for Schmucks this weekend, too, but I thought it was very funny. I'd give it a solid B.

It was good, but not great. I liked the theme, Washington and Oldman were enjoyable to watch as always, and the barren apocalyptic landscape was well done in managing to be different from other films of the genre. But I was never really emotionally invested, and I thought the end lacked the punch that it seemingly should have had. Overall, a solid B.

This was pretty much my reaction. At least it showed the writers were trying to create something more interesting than the average apocalypse movie.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. I really enjoyed it, but I think a lot of that comes from the really low expectations I had for the movie going into it. It has a lot of meat to chew on, but you're right about the emotional investment. I feel like Washingon's Eli was almost too dehumanized to really generate the level of empathy I think the writers were going for, and Mila Kunis' Solara wasn't developed enough to really matter to me at all. I appreciate the amount of time the film spent developing the setting and atmosphere, but I think if it had dropped some of its more action-y parts and focused on characterization instead it would have worked for me a lot more.

I thought the basic premise was interesting enough, but I agree that in any way other than visually the execution fell rather flat. I kind of wish it had been some other classic book, rather than the Bible. Then the idea of killing for the book wouldn't have seemed nearly as much of an idolatrous juxtaposition.

Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.
A great movie to take your kids to, assuming they've been naughty. I think I actually liked some of the commercials before the trailers before the movie more than I liked the movie itself. The blend of actual animals, rotoscoping, animatronics, and CG is unsettling; the plot seems to be straddling seriousness and satire and excels at neither; and the comedy mostly falls flat, depending as it does on sight gags and one-liners.
What surprised me about Cats and Dogs is that it actually could have been good. The movie contains references to everything from Batman to Men in Black, steeped of course in a significant amount of James Bond parody. Even the opening song sequence, a rendition of Get the Party Started done by Shirley Bassey in a very Bond-esque style, had me chuckling even as I was wincing. There were points when it felt as though the movie was trying to be a send up of spy thrillers, buddy cop movies, modern Jackie Chan action/comedies, and superhero movies all rolled into one. While parodying any one of these genres might have been well within this picture's reach, doing all of them at once just caused it to fail at each.
Please do not see this movie, and please do not show it to your kids. They deserve better.

Pocahontas. Y'know, the Disney version. I had actually never seen this before. There's something unintentionally hilarious about Mel Gibson taking part in a racist musical number.

I've been trying to see the academy award winning movies starting from the 40's. I was actually suprised how many I have already seen. This last weekend I saw 'An American in Paris' which I had never seen before, and which I liked very much.

I am David.
This movie could have been really powerful and poignant, were it not for its ambivalent direction and hit-or-miss writing. Some scenes seemed very stilted and artificial, making me wonder if the studio or the producer insisted on a 90-minute runtime, leaving content which would have fleshed the film out on the cutting room floor.
Speaking of film, I don't know if the movie had insufficient budget to afford quality film or if it was shot all-digital, but I suspect the latter because many of the dark scenes were plagued with the sort of visual noise you get when using a low-quality digital light sensor. It wound up being surprisingly distracting.
I think I am David is, ultimately, another bit of proof that it's surprisingly hard to take a powerful, well-written book and turn it into a powerful, well-directed movie.
