Besides, I was actually listening to the song and thought, why not?

The Royal Tenenbaums, second viewing. (First was when it was in theaters.) It's incredibly bizarre, watching this movie after having watched Arrested Development. Several of the plot threads are scarily similar. Though this one's less madcap and more heartfelt.

Paul.

If you liked Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, you will almost certainly like Paul. If you disliked them, you won't. I rather liked the former two, and I'd say I enjoyed the latter as well. It is incredibly funny, unrepentantly vulgar, and knows its material in a way that indicates affectionate fandom. The number of genre references is simply staggering. If you like Pegg and Frost's oddball, quirky, snarky, satirical take on pretty much everything, by all means--see this movie.

Just finished watching the original V miniseries, from 1983. Sure, the effects and some of the dialogue were cheesy, and I could tell where studio execs forced their hand in terms of capitalizing on the popularity of Star Wars at the time. But man, the overall story was so much more intelligently written than the ABC reboot that just got canned.

Most reviews I read agree with you, but also suggest that it contains a lot of raunchy and/or vulgar humor. Is this true?

Mostly in the dialogue; there was only really one scene that was visually disgusting, and that wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting.

I wouldn't say that it was the focus of the film.

Well it is a Judd Apatow film so raunchy dialogue is to be expected.

He didn't write it, though.

I know. I'm just saying any film where he is involved tends to be raunchy

I think people focus on that a little much, though. Apatow's stuff has a lot of heart, particularly "Freaks and Geeks".

This movie fit that aspect of the Apatow template as well, then. A lot of my friends are women. A lot of their friendships with other women are like this, particularly when one's getting married and another's struggling with singleness. Though it obviously plays out in a less extreme manner.

That's the only thing of his that I've ever enjoyed.  I don't find his movies to be that good.

I like them, implausible as they are next to that show, which is rather down-to-Earth.

Thor, which was really good.

Pirates 4, which was really there. The plot was cluttered and confusing, the characters were underdeveloped and boring. It was all the worst parts of the third movie without any of the chaotic fun of the second.

The original Arthur, with Dudley Moore. Whaddaya know, it's more obnoxious than the Russell Brand version.

Himalaya, one of many travel documentaries by Michael Palin of Monty Python fame. He spent about six months attempting to travel the length of the Himalayas through Pakistan, India, Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, which involved a lot of backtracking and unusual modes of transportation. He did quite a fair amount of trekking on foot as a consequence - I hope I'm in that kind of shape when I'm 60! I liked this, in that I'm curious about what people's lives are actually like in these far corners of the world, not just how they're made to appear cushy and convenient in the places most visited by tourists.

I plan on watching some of his other documentaries, because I am a geography nerd.

Insidious

A surprisingly fun and pretty well-written haunted house movie. Considering that this is from the director behind Saw, this came out of left field for me. It's actually got a twist that is an interesting take on haunted houses, it's genuinely creepy and atmospheric, and the characters are actually likable and sympathetic. The pacing is also pretty tight and keeps the plot moving along without feeling overly rushed. It does have a really weak ending, especially given that the events leading up to it are so entertaining, but overall it's worth checking out for fans of the genre.

Thor. Not really my kind of movie - you can only have so much CGI before I start to tune out and not care who's beating the crap out of whom on-screen because it's all arbitrary magic. But I enjoyed the time this movie spent in "reality", with the more grounded characters. It was a fun way to spend two hours. I can't complain.

X-Men: First Class.

Pretty much a return to form for the series. This one was every bit as good as the first one was, and I can't think of a single line that's as much of a wincer as Halle Berry's frog/lightning one, so it may even be a bit ahead.

It suffers from the same problem that Revenge of the Sith did, in that you pretty much know how it's going to turn out. There are quite a few cameos and nods to the previous films (probably even more than I caught, since I never saw the third one or Origins). That said, the way the story was woven together still worked, and I enjoyed the ride.

One of the things that really impressed me was how well the actors performed. Not just the leading roles, either, but the supporting cast all did a great job.

One thing I have to wonder, though; will there be a prequel-sequel? There are a lot of mutants who just sort of disappear between this movie and the original X-Men; there are several decades in there for mutant hijinks to ensue.

Overall, a good summer superhero action flick with a decent plot and some quality explosions. No overt love themes to speak of, which I think really made it a stronger film. Worth the price of admission.

Shutter Island. Great twist(s?) Sort of painful how the ending got dragged out once everything was explained. But not as terrorizing as the trailers made it out to be. Just sort of... mildly unsettling.

FWIW, I think it would be proper to either write it as Archimedes' or Archimedes's. One could also write Archimedes Death Ray in the same way that one might write Boeing 747 instead of Boeing's 747, but I don't know how standard that would be. Either way, it's cool that they showed that as in-flight entertainment. They probably don't show the ones about airplanes getting mangled in various creative ways, though!
