Love & Other Drugs.
Bleah. Should have been titled Lust & Other Drugs. Good chemistry between Gylenhall and Hathaway. And some chuckles here and there. That's about the best praise I have.

Michael Palin's Pole to Pole. Basically his objective was to travel from the North Pole to the South Pole, sticking as close as he could to 30 degrees east, only using planes when absolutely necessary. Fun stuff for folks like me who wonder what life is like in extreme parts of the world. Also more than a bit awkward when cultural misunderstandings occur in a Russian Orthodox Church, or way the hell out in the African bush. This was filmed in 1991, so he got to South Africa just barely after apartheid ended, and left the Soviet Union literally days before it started to collapse. (We also watched the episode where he traveled through Sudan - probably the most arduous leg of the journey - on the same day that I later found out South Sudan had gained independence.)

Kiki's Delivery Service
I've never seen this and know nothing about it beyond the title, but the other day while driving through Monterey Park, I noticed a "Kiki's Bakery", and wondered if they delivered. Any relation to the embarrassing political figure?
Gee, never heard that one before. Given his involvement with Monty Python back in the day, you'd think people would have been asking, when Sarah Palin first made national headlines, if she was related to him.

It was a question, not a joke, but I guess the answer is "no" and "yes" like it is with almost everyone else.

I just thought it was funny because I get that question (jokingly or otherwise) literally every time I bring up that I've been watching the guy's documentaries.

Well, I wouldn't dismiss him by association, anyway, due to her derp.

I guess because I first heard of him specifically in the context of his nationality (he's British), that it honestly didn't even cross my mind. Though I guess it's remotely possible they're related however far back it was that Sarah's family came to the U.S. her delivery service operates out of a bakery! it's a cute movie.
Yeah, it makes total sense to me now that whoever opened the bakery probably named it so because they liked the movie.

Cowboys and Aliens. It was a good movie. In tone, scope, and intent it reminds me a lot of District 9, but I actually liked Cowboys and Aliens better. The reason stems back to my original complaints about District 9: that it's confused about what it wants to be. Cowboys and Aliens is not confused. It's gritty action with a side of special effects, and it knows it. I have to say, too, the star power definitely helps. Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig can both act, and while I felt like Ford was in places emulating Gene Hackman in The Quick and the Dead, that might be because they were playing essentially the same character. But while Hackman's Herod goes in one direction, Ford's Dolarhyde goes in the opposite, and it works. If you like big guns, small guns, and bombs of all sizes, you will like this movie. They did it right.

I was told that aliens weren't even supposed to be a part of the movie, in the original script, then they basically retooled it when the story had nowhere to go. Or something like that. At least it's being advertised with aliens as part of the premise - it seems like you generally have a better chance of your story being credible when they're part of the premise, rather than the answer to the mystery that hangs over the entire film or something.
It looks like it could be fun, in an MST3K sort of way.

I never saw the original film, but I can assure you that the aliens are not tacked on to the plot of this one. From the start of the movie to the last, it's obvious that they were written in from the beginning.
C&A is not, in my opinion, an MST3K movie or a fun movie. It's not goofy or silly (you may be mentally equating it with Wild Wild West, which it could not be more different from), and while it's good, it's not a particularly feel-good movie. It's a gritty actioner with a distinct old-West flavor, with everything that entails. About 75% of the way through the movie it introduces about 30 new characters whose entire purpose is to die in various gory ways (which isn't really much of a spoiler, since they might as well have been wearing red away-team uniforms from the moment they came on screen). Definitely don't go into it expecting a light and fun summer flick, which is possibly one criticism of the movie's title, in that it can mislead folks into thinking it will be a goofy romp.

From the start of the movie to the last, it's obvious that they were written in from the beginning. I meant the original script for this film. Apparently it got a massive rewrite. C&A is not, in my opinion, an MST3K movie or a fun movie. It's not goofy or silly (you may be mentally equating it with Wild Wild West, which it could not be more different from), and while it's good, it's not a particularly feel-good movie. They screwed up on the advertising, then. If it's gory, I might stay away.

I can generally handle PG-13 gore, as it's no worse than what they can do on network TV. I didn't know what the movie was rated. If it'd R then I have to find out specifically what got it that rating (language is fine, nudity I can handle, violence - depends on what kind).

Never Let Me Go
Had no idea what to expect. Wife picked it out at Redbox thinking it was a boarding school-coming of age movie. Which it kind of is, with a decidedly sci-fi twist. Interesting, but more mentally intriguing than emotionally satisfying. And slow. Worth watching if you're in the mood for it. Good, but not great.

Rango, first viewing.
Rango is trying really hard to not just be a forgettable slapstick CG movie. It's quirky, quite funny in places (sometimes very subtly so), has a main character who audiences can reasonably identify with, and paints a fairly deep, if slightly cliched, story. However, for whatever reason all of these elements do not manage to come together to make a great film.
I think the main reason for this is that in its attempt to fit in all the epic throes of Gore Verbinski's imagination it manages to come across as schizophrenic. I could never decide whether it was trying to be goofy or serious, lowbrow or subtle, laugh-out-loud funny or "I see what you did there" subtle. It never really finds its own voice.
One thing about Rango that I found interesting is what passes for PG these days. Apparently you can say "hell" with impunity in a PG movie, and a "damn" slips through as well. I don't want to be a curse counter, but I remark on this because I find it interesting that words which suggest irreverence seem to be perfectly fine while words which are simply vulgar are still verboten. There's also a scene where one of the villains grabs a character and tells her "I want to watch you die" as he begins to choke her to death. That's surprisingly disturbing for a movie that's ostensibly kid-friendly.
I do have to say, though, that the music was top-notch. I enjoyed that part immensely.
Rango was not a bad movie, but neither was it a great movie. It could very well end up becoming a franchise, like fellow edgy kids' movie Shrek (which I didn't like for similar reasons, suggesting that I may just not get the genre) and Verbinski's previous hit Pirates of the Carribean, but ultimately, for me at least, it was forgettable.

I don't think Shrek was that edgy. Irreverent, yes, but I don't feel like it skirted the PG lines as much. then again, it was 2001. Anyway, it's one of my favorites and still hilarious; the problem is that so many other animated films have wanted to steal its "parody any and every pop culture reference you can even though it's a total anachronism" brand of humor and that's kind of diluted its effect over time.

Nope; can't take a movie seriously when it derives much of its humor from booger and fart jokes. I will admit that the scene where Fiona's singing causes the bird to explode is brilliant, but beside that one moment of excellence the movie is quite inappropriate for kids and inane for adults. If I ever have the misfortune of progeny thrust upon me, they will watch The Princess Bride rather than Shrek, because despite similarities in setting and theme the former is superior in nearly every way while relying much more on wordplay, sight gags, and deadpan irony than on bodily functions for its laughs.

I think you're over-exaggerating the stuff you didn't like. I'm not a big fan of booger and fart jokes. They weren't the majority of that film's humor. If they were, I wouldn't have liked it.

The Change Up.
Bleah. An R-rated Freaky Friday, with an emphasis on the most over-the-top gross out/poop/boob/sex jokes possible. However, I did laugh a few times. The best part was looking for Atlanta landmarks I recognized/have been to (which was quite a few).

127 Hours
Fantastic movie. Boyle really has a way with the camera and finds the soul of the movie instead of it being just an adventure yarn about a guy stuck in a canyon. A lot more surreal than I expected, but I shouldn't be too surprised, since the surrealism was used a good bit in Millions as well.
And yes, the infamous "cutting" scene is pretty rough, but not as bad as I feared. The use of sound actually is more grating/amplifies the sensation of pain more than the visuals you see, which is primarily a lot of blood.

I tend to empathize with physical pain easily, so that's why I generally can't watch this sort of stuff. I can't make my brain stop wondering how that must feel.
