The Help. A bit chick-flicky, but I liked it, aside from its strange fascination with people going to the bathroom.
It was funny when Netflix sent out a customer survey asking me if The Help had arrived.

X-Men: First Class. That was fun. Suffers a bit from the usual "we barely knew ye" problem of trying to cram an ensemble cast into a single movie, but a lot of that stuff's probably a treat for folks who know the comics and remember the three "Grown-up X-Men" films better than I do (or else it's a nightmare for those who like their continuity porn).

The Adventures of Tintin
A perfectly adequate action flick, but aggressively avoids any hint of depth or substance. It doesn't try to be more than it is, but it isn't very much at all. Kids will likely get a kick out of it, and it's certainly the sort of movie I would have had a blast seeing a couple of decades ago (yes, I'm old now. Hush.)

I've started watching Portlandia, which stars Fred Armisen from SNL and Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney. I don't know why, but anything that spoofs hipster/granola culture makes me giggle. This is basically sketch comedy masquerading as a sitcom, so the two lead actors play like a bazillion different characters, and some of the vignettes are as bad as your average 12:55 slot SNL sketch, but when they're funny, they're really funny.
When I actually visit Portland this summer, thanks to this show it will seem normal in real life by comparison.

I really loved the first two episodes of season one, (Portlandia) but it felt like it dropped off steeply after that. Did you experience that at all?

I watched the first 5 minutes last night. I figure I should watch the first season on Netflix before I jump in on the new season

Yeah - I need to watch most of first season, but I watched the first episode of the second season anyway. It's one of very few stuffy British things I can get into.

I didn't realize it had made it into theaters in non-special cities, but apparently it has. I may go see it.

rewatched the 1979 Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy miniseries. (I keep trying to write some stuff about the movie but end up rambling too much and then deleting it/not posting. I do think that some of you pholks would enjoy the story, so I would encourage you to read the book and/or watch the miniseries. the film might be a good starting place to get you interested in the story, but my opinion is that it isn't a very satisfactory standalone version of it. there are things it does very well but other things that it does in a way that I don't find satisfying, but mileage may vary, and there are other opinions.)

The Christmas special, and final episode, of the original UK version of The Office. This series definitely would have been too uncomfortable for me to watch without the American series to get me up to speed on the whole "cringe comedy" style. And they definitely get away with a lot more on British TV. But this series is pretty good at figuring out the stuff that people sometimes think and know they should never say out loud, and then saying it anyways. It's been neat to see how the plot threads in the British episodes turned into ideas that the US version would put their own spin on and have more time to expand upon.

it's definitely my favorite of the second series, which surprised me because the writer also wrote my least favorite episode, The Blind Banker.
I recently watched some episodes of the British show Countdown. it bemuses me that such a show exists and continues to exist, but there's something about it that I quite enjoy.

A Scandal in Belgravia
Some fun in-jokes for Holmes fans, plus a very intense episode. Irene Adler was portrayed very well (though Sherlock said she was clearly born in the 80s, while I thought she looked older than that. Perhaps it's just my own denial as a child of the 80s myself). I love Holmes' relationship with Ms. Hudson in this adaptation; it's exactly how I imagined it from the stories. This series is so much fun; I'm sure Reichenbach Fall will be intense, and I look forward to August for his return!
The Return of Sherlock Holmes is my favorite anthology of all the Holmes stories; I think it's Doyle at his best, and hopefully the next bits will be from those anthologies.
(I found it interesting that the two adventures which were lampshaded on Watson's blog, "The Speckled Band" and "The Greek Interpreter", chronologically both come after "A Scandal in Bohemia". Still quite amusing, though.)

it doesn't sound like series/season 3 will air before next year. :\ I didn't much care for Irene, but I thought too that she looks older. or rather, I thought she seemed of undefinable age and that she's older than she appears.

I've watched a couple episodes of that show, but I wasn't really enthused. I guess I should have expected it, but there was less science and analysis and more prestidigitation and hand-waving. I'll stick to Mythbusters.

I like that the show isn't as hyper/loud/explosive/whatever as Mythbusters, and I like Teller, but I would like more explanation and analysis and less "aha look at these idiots doing their idiotic things!" ranting from Penn. I end up feeling secondhand embarrassment for the people whose stuff is being debunked and ridiculed. also bafflement that they even talked to the people making the show.

"The Hounds of Baskerville", episode 2.2 of Sherlock.
Perhaps it's because I love The Hounds of the Baskervilles so much or perhaps it's because the episode bore nearly no relation at all to the story, but I noticed the difference between the two much more starkly than usual. I wanted to watch Sherlock, not CSI: Devonshire, but aside from a couple of quotes awkwardly lifted verbatim from the book, the show in this case bore nearly no relation to the source material. It felt too modern, too primetime-American-tellyish to really have the same draw as "A Scandal in Belgravia".
