was a lazy bum last night and watched G.I. Joe and Wanted on television. I love Wanted and could see that many times over. G.I. Joe? a pile of crap.

a couple of episodes of Penn & Teller: Fool Us
their reactions to the people who do fool them amuse me greatly.

I am just getting into Justified. Love it.
This has quickly become my favorite show on TV right now. Complex characters, truly tense situations and some of the best dark humor around.

The Firm was on cable over the weekend. I am not a big fan of Tom Cruise but The Firm is one of the few exceptions. It's the best John Grisham book (IMO) and was made into a great movie.

Maybe I should give that a try just so I don't have a completely negative view of Josh Grisham. The new TV series that is based on The Firm is extremely yawn-inducing; it's no surprise that the ratings are abysmal and that NBC has kicked it to the Saturday night death slot. I've watched legal dramas before and found some of them compelling even without the murder/conspiracy/run-for-your-life angle, so I don't know why this stuff isn't doing it for me. I think Tom Cruise is a total nutjob, but I wouldn't hold it against movies he made before he went nuts. Also, the fact that he's crazy now at least means he's foolish enough to do all of his own stunts.

Well I didn't like a lot of his movies back in the day. Rain Man, the firm, a Few good men: all good. Stuff like Top Gun and Days of Thunder are unwatchable to me. I can't stand them.

I didn't see Rain Man or Top Gun until I was an adult. The former is a high-quality film; the latter is just cheesy 80's fun for its own sake 9though it arguably had more serious intentions at the time).
I should probably still see A Few Good Men, if for no other reason than to finally understand the context of its famous meme.
One of my most amusing memories of a Tom Cruise movie was watching Far and Away in a history class in high school. We were studying immigration or something like that, but I think the teacher basically wanted an excuse to show us one of her favorite movies. Of course we all giggled naughtily at the scene where Nicole Kidman looks under the bowl. The teacher explained: "They're married in real life, so she's seen it before."

you can't handle A Few Good Men!! I was reminded recently of one my favorite bits from that movie and want to rewatch it. "I have no responsibilities here whatsoever."

The Firm is very good but I think The Testament is better.

The Firm, huh? Great book. Horrible movie. I couldn't get into the TV show.
Then again, I have been disappointed in nearly every movie that has been based on a Grisham book. The Client is the only exception that comes to mind.

Zombieland, first viewing.
Ehh...
There's some funny lines and moments. Woody Harrelson is great. And Bill Murray...yes, that works. But there's just too much to wade through, and I can't recommend that you do so.

The Reichenbach Fall
A very powerful episode. A chess match between two great minds. In many ways, could not be more different from the short story, which I think is when the series is at its best. I can't wait for the denouement later this year, though when you have an ally in the city morgue, you can choose the scene of the final showdown, and you have a easily-manipulated friend as witness I imagine it's not a massive coup to stage one's own death. Still, far better than Hound and demonstrative of the incredible skills of the series' actors.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure just for kicks.
Salt - good actioner, but more than a bit far-fetched.

The Descendants. Good mix of humor and drama, and of course the Hawaii setting gave it some slight extra points. Still surprised as hell that Jim Rash (the dean from Community) co-wrote this.
The Lorax. A bit heavy-handed with the environmental message, but at least you know that from the get-go (and it's kind of unavoidable given the source material). Ed Helms was a perfect casting choice for this one. That and Betty White more than made up for Zac "What-the-Ef-is-Rong" and Taylor Swift.

We're Netflixing Northern Exposure. Just watched the first episode last night. It looks promising.
On the subject of 90s shows I wasn't savvy enough to get into at the time, we've also been watching a lot of Seinfeld reruns. Whichever ones the DVR picks up, so it's all out of order. Still very funny, though. I can see how much it influenced some of my favorite modern sitcoms.

You're about my age murlough. In my case, even if I was savvy enough about what on TV was worth watching in 8th/9th grade, I don't think "Seinfeld" would have flown with my parents (I think I was watching "Home Improvement" in that time slot). I was into it by the time it was a bit inferior to its former self, though.

I've been watching them in random order, so I can't tell what episodes are from what season until I look them up later. I have heard that the middle seasons were the show's best, though.

Amazon Prime subscribers get free streaming of some stuff, and my TV has an app that will stream stuff from Amazon (the fact that I took all of this for granted until just now when I wrote it out suggests that the future is, if not actually here, at least in the general area). They recently added a bunch of stuff from the Discovery channel, so today I decided to watch an episode of Man vs. Wild. I chose the North Africa episode, because I love Africa and thought it would be interesting.
I was actually fairly disappointed. I prefer the information content to be a bit higher, and it was basically just random vignettes which were somewhat entertaining and/or interesting but not extremely compelling. The camera work didn't due the locale justice (I know; it's a survival program so you can't expect brilliant cinematography, but come on...you're in North Africa. Could have done better), and I guess my biggest complaint is that I don't see any real reason for the show. Bear Grylls walking around rambling incoherently and drinking his own urine might make sense as a YouTube series, but as a Discovery Channel show...nah. I just don't get it.

Horton Hears a Who. My wife wanted to see it after we saw The Lorax. It was a bit on the "we should be watching this with kids" side of things, but it was worth it to imagine what all of the goofy comic actors' (Jim Carrey, Steve Carell, Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Carol Burnette, etc.) facial expressions must have looked like in the studio. Especially humorous was Will Arnett doing a scenery-chewing Russian accent as Vlad the Vulture.

Tried to watch an indie film called Lo. I turned it off out of boredom two thirds of the way through. The acting was weak, the writing wasn't as funny as it thought it was, and the whole thing reeked of pretension.
Then I watched Grave Encounters, which is mostly a Blair Witch/Paranormal Activity ripoff, but it did have some ideas of it's own. I can't say what those are without spoiling a couple nice twists towards the middle of the second act, but despite the cliches and jump scares, it was well shot, competently acted, and worth a watch.

Watched A Dolphin's Tale on DVD.
It wasn't bad, but it was super predictable. Morgan Freeman pretty much made the movie watchable, but it's certainly not cinematic gold. It's a decent feel-good movie, if perhaps about 20% too long.

I use the Monty Hall problem episode in my class when I'm teaching probability. It's pretty cool what they do to demonstrate it, but I don't personally need this sort of demonstration where the math alone can show it to be true.
