I guess it's time to add this, too.
I just bought tickets to see Michael Buble on 3/18 in Charlotte. My wife and I saw him last summer, and he has a new album out since then. He put on a great show, so I'm really looking forward to it.
I'll also be seeing Steven Curtis Chapman in Charlotte on 3/15. My wife and brother-in-law are beyond obsessed with him, so it's an easy decision to make. I like his concerts, to I'm looking forward to it, too. I'm wondering who the openers are going to be - it was Bethany Dillon and Sanctus Real for the fall leg. Unfortunately, I know SR is touring with another band in the spring, so I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I'm still skeptical about whether they're going to get their crap together and actually give us a new album.

At this point, I don't even have my hopes up anymore. But the fact that they're playing a show could prove my guess wrong. Who knows... but if I go see them, I'll be sure to let you know what I find out.

Went to Steven Delopoulos's album release show, it was amazing. He had a full band and a gospel choir with him, which made for a different sound than the album. Take everything that is amazing about Steven on cd and turn it up to eleven, that is his live show. The upright bass added a lot of fullness to his sound, and Garret Buell of Caedmon's Call did a nice job providing percussion. The choir did a couple numbers during the set which were short and fit the mood, so I didn't mind. Steven was as charismatic and funny as ever.
The setlist was,
The Ruin Of The Beast May I Always Keep Both Feet Upon The Ground She Held My Hand Wallfly Work To be Done People Come And Go As If Love Was A Sword The Great Conductor Another Day/I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound Mansions The Dancer

took my youth group to Winter Jam tonight...it was packed and electric...and i wasn't a big fan of most of it. overall i'd give it a D, the only reason it's that high being Skillet was awesome as usual in concert, and Group1Crew was pretty cool as well. the rest of it was Christian culture and K-Love radio at it's best...er, worst...so cliche, so much of a 'pep rally for Jesus' and religious cheerleading feel to it. i hope and pray lives were truly changed by it, but i had a cynical attitude most of the night. Mandisa, Newsong, and Mercy Me might as well have been the same people in different bodies, as they sounded so stereotype CCM in their music and in what came out of their mouths when they spoke (Newsong basically did the same exact set as EVERY year at this by the way). Mercy Me was the most disappointing, honestly. They used to be amazing in concert, so i had hoped they still were even though their albums don't do anything for me. nope. they sounded much like their albums, and overly slick and cliche in lyrics and music alike, which is disappointing for a group that's been around for more than a decade with mostly the same members. Skillet was cool, but they only got to do 5 songs...get this...they not only didn't have top billing (Mercy Me), they didn't even get the #2 spot (Barlow Girl did). i dunno, maybe i'm extra cynical b/c i've recently read Matthew Turner's Christian Culture Survival Guide and am reading Kyle Lake's Prayer book, which both discuss the cliches of Christian culture, but i picked up on SO much of it tonight. the kids had a good time, but form e personally it was a letdown and i was glad i only paid $10 for it.
Thankfully, i get Caedmon's and Derek Webb next Thursday...it better make up for it.

I think one can only attend so many things of this type before one realizes it's all a bit shallow. C'mon, you like Christian music that goes deeper than that and some of it is youth-friendly... perhaps it's time to expose your youth group to something that doesn't treat them like fourth graders.

I wish they'd tour more of the country. I haven't seen 'em since their boring-ass worship band phase.

Alright, I promised a little more detail from the CC/DW tour last night. First, it should be noted that for the first time in my 100+concerts attended, we got to see the first show of a tour. They began in Conway Arkansas, at a little Missionary Baptist College called Central Baptist College. It's a pretty strict/traditional/conservative school, which I know because I have a student there, but which I also found funny given Derek being...well, not that way. I kept wondering what their higher-ups would think if they were there. But anyways, that's background, and as such, it being the first night, there was a lot of stuff you probably wouldn't see on any other date of the tour...kinks worked out, lots of side-jabbering, band members coming out into the audience on songs they didn't have a part on to listen to the sound (i told my wife it looked like they were getting a feel for stuff so they could get together later that night or this morning to work on some sound and other issues), and even just the general feel for them getting reacquainted with playing with Derek for the first time in a while. Oh, and Garret Buell, percussionist, sliced open his hand on like the second song and disappeared for 2-3 songs and nobody knew what happened, which was incredibly humorous once we knew he was ok. It actually led them to change a song and to one of the more humorous points of a night in which there were TONS of humorous points, when Cliff said 'alright, let's change this and do an older song,' and played a couple of notes so everyone could get a feel for what song he was talking about...everyone except Andy, who wasn't around back then, and he goes 'wait, what song is this?! i'm the new guy remember,' and when they told him, he said 'ok, i know that one, good.' A couple of things my wife and I picked up on before I get into the songs played, etc...first, they all looked like they REALLY were having a great time, enjoying having Derek back, enjoying each other, etc. Secondly, they had great interaction with each other and with the audience, and I laughed sooooo much because they all joked around in mostly self-deprecating humor type ways, a lot. It just made for a FUN atmosphere. And they didn't seem to care about the size of the crowd at all (which MAY have been 250-300), by the way, which was cool given how long they've been around, etc. On to the show...Derek played about 6-7 songs or so if I recall. It was just him and his guitar and his prophetic/sarcastic voice. But it was a very full sound for just him and the guitar and his voice sounded awesome. He started off with "Nobody Loves Me" off the first solo album, then did (not necessarily in order) "A New Law," "A King and a Kingdom," "Name," "Lover," "Wedding Dress," and "This Too Shall Be Made Right." He mentioned that "Name" had been played during a showing of Grey's Anatomy, and how cool that was for him, but also humorously interjected how 'there was much fornication going on during it.' Then they took a 5 or so minute break and Caedmon's came on...8 people on stage has the potential to be slightly overwhelming, but it wasn't at all, and they had good spacing and a good arrangement of the people, in my opinion. It also could be a case of 'too many chiefs,' with Cliff, Derek and Andy, but they all did a wonderful job of playing lead as well as fading back when the others did. It was really cool. Anyways, they started with a surprise..."My Calm/Your Storm" off their indy album by that name. I knew then that it wasn't gonna necessarily be a predictable night. Instead of trying to remember the order, I'll just try to recall what they played off each album... off "My Calm/Your Storm": "My Calm/Your Storm" off Self-titled: "This World," "Hope to Carry On," and "Not Enough" (which actually is also on "My Calm..." as well) off "Intimate Portrait": "April Showers" off 40 Acres: "Thankful," "Shifting Sand," "Faith My Eyes," "40 Acres," "Climb On" off "Share the Well": "Share the Well" (I was disappointed this was the only one they played off this album, but it also was the only song all night they played that was from an album Derek wasn't a part of the band for...they also had the Dalit Freedom Network there and talked about that) off "Overdressed":"Trouble," "Expectations," "There is a Reason," "Share in the Blame," "Hold the Light," "Two Weeks in Africa," "Ten Thousand Angels" (which as Derek pointed out was also on Grey's Anatomy, although he was quick to point out that this time there was 'significantly less fornication going on') Cover tune: "In God's Country" by U2 nothing from "Long Line of Leavers," "Back Home," "In the Company of Angels," or "In the Company...II" (mostly thankful for that, haha) That's what i can remember...there may be another song or two here and there. Andy Osenga also played 3 solo songs, one off Photographs ("When Will We Run,"), one off The Morning ("New Beginnings,") and one off his 'free EP' called Letters to the Editor Vol. I ("Swing Wide the Glimmering Gates"). They ended originally with "Hope to Carry On," then came back for "Ten Thousand Angels," "April Showers," and "Thankful," which ended the night spectacularly, trashcans and all, and included Andy and Cliff both playing some percussion for a while as well. I was so impressed at their level of musicianship among ALL of the band...they are all VERY VERY good at what they do and fed off each other so well. I was blown away by Andy more than anyone else...he is a phenomenal guitarist, and played about 6 different guitars and played some incredible solos as well. I got to talk to Andy and Cliff for a few minutes afterwards and left very impressed with them both as well. Cliff told me that b/c he was losing his voice they actually had dropped 3 songs, which is amazing given that they did almost 20 and played for 2 hours, that there could have been more even. I wouldn't have complained at all if they had played more. I wish they'd tour more of the country. I haven't seen 'em since their boring-ass worship band phase. that was the first time i had gotten to see them in 10 years...since 1998, when i saw them twice on their first major tour. I found out from talking to Cliff that it was the first time they had been in Arkansas at all on tour since 1999, so they don't 'tour more of the country' very on. Actually, I have gathered that compared to most bands they don't tour as much period. Regardless, I'm very glad they did this time on this tour in this area. It was worth the 45 minute drive, and worth every penny my wife spent to get me tickets and buy me dinner to celebrate my b'day earlier this week. Very awesome night.

that was the first time i had gotten to see them in 10 years...since 1998, when i saw them twice on their first major tour. I saw them on that same tour, at the House of Blues Sunset Strip in 1998 (opening acts were two guys I'd never heard of named Bebo Norman and Andrew Peterson). It was a great show. I remember them sound-checking "Thankful", which I could hear from outside the venue, and then playing it later that night, along with "Table for Two" - it was awesome to get to hear both of those early. Saw them again at the same venue a year later, eerily on the same day that the Columbine Massacre occurred. I don't remember if the band said anything about it from stage; they may not have been aware of it yet. I found out from talking to Cliff that it was the first time they had been in Arkansas at all on tour since 1999, so they don't 'tour more of the country' very on. Actually, I have gathered that compared to most bands they don't tour as much period. In that case, is a live album (heavy on Share the Well and Overdressed) too much to ask for?

My wife and I saw them together the second time on that tour, and I remember we didn't know what "Thankful" was called, so until we heard it on 40 Acres and found out, we and our friends who also went simply would tell people it was 'the trashcan song.' In that case, is a live album (heavy on Share the Well and Overdressed) too much to ask for? i agree, that would be cool.

I've always liked Andrew more than Bebo, even from that first show. Bebo's got the better voice and the better sense of humor, but a lot of the melodies and instrumentation to his songs are either (a) boring as hell, or (b) too pop-oriented for me to take him seriously as a folk artist. (Then again, I could say the same for The Far Country, which disappointed me enough to take Andrew off of my "must-buy-sight-unseen" list.) NP: "All at Once", Jack Johnson

Anybody seeing Radiohead during their North American tour? Pre-sale tickets went on sale yesterday and sold out in less than a minute. The rest of the tickets go on sale tomorrow (2/16) at 10:00 am. I thought going, but there's no way my wife would want to go. I'm not a solo concert-goer.

OtR seems to have decided that they don't like any of the venues in my area :-( Why does LiveNation keep buying out all the decent-sized venues?!?
Possibly on my horizon:
Iron and Wine (I forget who's opening) Tift Merritt with Sara Watkins REM with Modest Mouse and the National Tom Petty with people who aren't important

So how is this for a concert: The Police w/ Elvis Costello & The Imposters. Sadly, the tickets are too freaking expensive. At the show in Buffalo, the price range is $139 - $1284.

I saw Shane & Shane with Starfield and Bethany Dillon over here in Baton Rouge this past Wednesday. I'll admit I'm not that much of a fan of Shane & Shane on CD. However, I decided to check this show out because I had heard really good things about them in concert, tickets were cheap, and I didn't have to travel very far.
Bethany Dillon was up first, and she had a very short set, doing one song with just her and an acoustic guitar, and then she was joined by part of Shane & Shane's band on her second song before giving way to Shane & Shane. Her first song really didn't stick out for me, but Shane & Shane's band textured her second song quite well. Personally, though, I think it's rather telling that she didn't sound all that interesting without the band. This was not the case the last time I saw her. Between that, and her unimpressive last few CDs, I'm thinking Bethany has stagnated a bit as an artist, which is too bad because she started with so much promise.
After a short break, Shane & Shane came on, and there was a little delay in the start of their set due to technical difficulties. In the meantime, Shane Barnard joked around with the crowd, especially making a lot of LSU references, including a few to their recent National Football Championship. Once the set was finally underway, I saw why Shane & Shane's live show has such a good reputation. The two of them are very dynamic live, and the band also has a very good feel for musical texture which really added to the show. The Shanes also harmonize well together, and tonight it was more impressive considering Shane Everett was a little sick. As for their songs, they stood out much better in a live setting than on CD, and as an added bonus, their lyrics were a lot more thought-provoking than I expected, with "Embracing Accusation" especially standing out. Outside of the music, the Shanes showed off their sense of humor, highlighted by them jokingly doing a rap about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednigo before doing a song actually about them ("Burn Us Up.") The only significant complaint I had about their set was that I thought Shane Barnard started to ramble a bit much toward the end of the set. That notwithstanding, it was still a very well-played and enjoyable set.
After Shane & Shane's set, David Nasser came up to speak for about an hour. Ultimately his point was to give a pitch for World Vision, but he went on a lot of tangents along the way, as you could probably tell by the talk length. On the plus side, a lot of his stories were quite funny, and he showed he has no problem laughing at himself. However, I really didn't like that he went into so many tangents, and additionally he lost me at the end when he started guilt-tripping the audience. So overall I had mixed feelings here. Cut the length in half and take out the guilt trips and I would have been fine. At the end of Nasser's talk, Bethany Dillon came back and half of a song, which would have been a full song had her amp not shorted.
After Nasser's sermon, there was a short intermission before Starfield came on and gave a short set. Overall, I thought they did a fairly decent job, showing they were pretty good at what they did. Admittedly, I hadn't been keeping much track of them since their debut CD, which had a few radio singles I liked, and after hearing some of their newer songs, I see I haven't missed much. (Enough cliched lyrics?) However, they were very energetic with what they did, so I bought into it. Their first and last songs came off especially well in a live setting. Additionally, the guys endeared themselves to the crowd with the lead singer wearing an LSU shirt and one of the guitarists wearing a tiger tail. On the downside, the guys partook in one of my big annoyances for Christian concerts. During "Unashamed", the lead singer broke into a long sermon, and then at the end of it went right back into the song. I know some people like that, but I personally think that kills the momentum of the song. If the sermon was absolutely necessary, I just think the concert would flow better if the song just ended after the sermon, rather than going back to the chorus. That one annoyance aside, I still thought there was more to like than not about Starfield's set.
The evening closed with Shane & Shane joining Starfield on the stage for a few worship songs. However, it was starting to get late (around 10 PM local time) and I needed to go to work the next day, so I bailed out at this point. So overall, this concert isn't going to go down as one of my favorites, but for the most part it was still enjoyable, and I think it was worthwhile for me to go.
Set Lists: Shane and Shane: "Psalm 145", "The Answer", "Psalm 118", "Burn Us Up", "Beg", "Embracing Accusation", "Vision of You" Starfield: "The Hand That Holds the World", (some new song with the words "Mighty to Save" in the chorus), "Unashamed", "Filled With Your Glory" Bethany Dillon: (some worship song I didn't recognize, but some other people did), "Let Your Light Shine", (post-Nasser talk) "You Are On Our Side"

Did they play "Rain Down" or "O, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing"? Those were the only two from that album that they didn't play for us, and I think both would have been highlights.

My wife and I saw Michael Buble last night. It was a great night - he is an amazing entertainer, and a heck of a singer. He mixes the right amount of humor, self-deference, tenderness, sincerity, power, and intimacy into his performances. But, at the bottom of it all, he is a showman. He sang for about 100 minutes and covered eighteen full songs and a few snippets here and there as well. This included a song he said will be on his next album, "You're Nobody Until Somebody Loves You." His band, a 12-piece outfit, was spot-on. He has assembled some real talent. The three real highlights of the night were "Home," "That's All," and "A Song For You." During "Home," a video was played on the backdrop that had sights and images filmed that day in Charlotte. We saw our airport, different buildings & statues, logos from the Tarheels and Carolina Panthers, and finished with a shot of the American flag that waves on top of one of the buildings downtown. It was quite powerful, and drove the point of the song home (heh). For "That's All," he brought out a 10-member gospel choir, which added a whole new dimension. This was the last song before the encore, and they all pulled out the stops. "A Song For You" was the last song of the night. And, even though he did the same thing last time we saw him (and does it every night), I couldn't help but smile when he cut the microphone and sang the last 4-5 lines without amplification. Pretty impressive in a 20,000 seat arena. All-in-all, a great date night.
And I can't go without mentioning the opening act, Naturally 7. They were nothing short of spectacular, and they really wowed the place. They were a great band that featured all sorts of instruments - guitar, harmonica, drums, bass, turntables, trombone, and violin. Oh, and I did mention that everything was done vocally? They reminded me a lot of Take 6, just with an extra member and more variety. Their harmony was mesmerizing. And - get this - they were open about being Christians. Before one of their songs, "Say You Love Me," the lead singer mentioned that the lyrics were very important, because they were written from the standpoint of God wanting us to love Him and come to Him. They got a full-blown standing ovation when they finished, and were out signing autographs at their table after the show. It looked like at least 1000 people were in line. Good for them!
Michael Buble's setlist 1. I'm Your Man 2. It Had Better Be Tonight 3. Me and Mrs. Jones 4. Fever (Part of Rehab by Amy Winehouse) 5. Call me Irresponsible 6. Instrumental band feature 7. I've Got the World on a String 8. You Were Always on My Mind 9. Lost 10. You're Nobody Until Somebody Loves You 11. Feeling Good 12. Home 13. Everything (Don't Be Cruel as Elvis; YMCA) 14. Save the Last Dance For Me 15. How Sweet It Is 16. That's Life (Encore) 17. Crazy Little Thing Called Love 18. A Song for You

LOL. If there's anyone whose music makes me want to get drunk and raise hell, it's Michael Buble's.

Saw a local band, Brother, at Home Brew Coffee in San Dimas on Saturday night. Twas free and twas fun. I know some of you live in the area. Another local band, The Denouement is playing there on April 18. I've seen them numerous times, and if you can make it, I highly recommend it. It will be free. http://www.myspace.com/thedenouement

I was reading a post about the Music Builds Tour by Chad Butler of Switchfoot. Apparently, this is the "ambitious tour schedule" that Third Day has been talking about. It looks like it's going to be a traveling festival to benefit Habitat for Humanity this fall. Main stage artists will be Switchfoot, Jars of Clay, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, and Third Day. A side stage is also in the works. I really hope it comes by this way!

know what's even worse than that? they are based in my area, where most of the kids in my youth group go to school, and tour through here all the time, like probably at least 4 times a year, and yet we still haven't gotten to see them because it always conflicts with something.
