I don't think it's that hard to get me to like a more straightforward song, but I'm not sure what factors into me gravitating toward them at times when there are far more ambitious songs on an album. The song's inherent beauty likely does have a lot to do with it.
Ambitious or straightforward, it has to hit the mark to matter to me. Making a good "pretty song" is arguably easier than making a good "weird song", but I prefer a band can do both to a band that can only do one. Plus it's not like the "straightforward" song in question is typical pop music or anything. |

So far My Girls, Summertime, Bluish and Guys Eyes (the track I'm on now) are standouts... which is over half the tracks I've listened to

I like the lead track a lot, too.
"In the Flowers" is one of the difficult ones for me. Also difficult are "Guy's Eyes" (especially the part where they repeat "need ya" like twenty hundred times before getting the hell on with it) and "Taste" (which apparently means I have none). That's 3 out of 11 tracks. Given my total lack of experience with this band prior to this album, I expected to struggle with it a lot more than that. (EDIT: OK, 3 and a half. I forgot that the last half of "Daily Routine" was kind of a pain in the ass.) |

In the Flowers is the only one that's not really clicking for me, although it's still quite good. Everything else is fantastic.
Honestly, I don't see this not being my number one for the year.

You're right; usually not a lot of notable stuff gets released in January. It seems like the big ones generally don't come out in the winter. Kinda like movies (though there's an exception on Christmas Day for movies, and vexingly, Dec. 26 for music). An overwhelming majority of my favorites from 2000 up until now have been summer releases (with the two or three others being fall releases). Before then, I don't recall any release dates offhand. 2009 *is* off to an unusually great start. I'm not going to waste time with predictions about what will be on my Best of 2009 list-- we're not even halfway through January yet!!-- but I will say that I've heard at least five albums that would make very honorable, excellent choices for such a list. (Granted, none of those albums have actually released in stores yet.)
And we've still got U2, Neko Case, Ramblin' Jack, Arctic Monkeys, and possibly Joe Henry, Grinderman, and Jarvis to go. This is shaping up to be a very rich musical year, possibly as much so as 2006 and 2004 (my two favorite years from this decade, musically speaking).

Well I've listened about 10 times now, and I'm giving it a 9.7, though that could change a little when I write a review (getting my thoughts organized on paper sometimes helps me see that a different score is needed). If it sticks though, it will be the highest score I've given this decade, narrowly beating Boxer, Frances the Mute and Kid A. In fact, I'm convinced that it's better than all three of those albums, and not as good as OKC, which I gave a 9.8. So 9.7 will probably be my final score. and yes i know my scores are really precise, so shut up  |

I wouldn't say so much precise as arbitrary, but I suppose any system is to some extent. |
