Just bought and watched the U2 Elevation Live DVD today, and all I have to say is that I am very impressed. This is an amazing concert. I kept hearing that this was a "back to the basics" tour, so I was just expecting it to be the band on the stage, playing without any light shows or TV screens or theatrics. Actually, it has quite alot of theatrics and lights and TV screens, so I have no idea what the non-basics tours must have been like. I learned some things from watching it, like that Bullet the Blue Sky is a song about gun violence in America. I don't like it as much as I used to before I knew this. There are some songs on the DVD that I had never heard before, such asGone, Stay(Faraway, So Close), and Wake Up Dead Man, and various mini songs that I don't know what they are called. All in all, this is a cool DVD.

YES! Elevation is an astonishing DVD! The quality of the production is amazing. This is a must-have for U2 fans.
And "Bullet" isn't about gun violence. They might use it that was in the concert, but it's really not about that at all.

Seems to me if they use it a certain way, they mean it that way. Though, since they did change the lyrics around, maybe they just decided to make a point because the song did have "Bullet" in the title. But yes, you should buy this DVD if you like U2.

"Bullet the Blue Sky" was originally written about Ronald Reagan's foreign policy in Latin America. Really, nothing in the song indicates that it's about gun violence other than the word "bullet"- the references to fighter planes, burning crosses, etc. suggest that it's about something different.
But, as with all U2 songs, the song could apply to a variety of situations.

I just watched the Popmart and ZooTV tour trailers. Weird! I guess I understand the whole stripped down thing now. Was ZooTV for AB or for Zooropa? But to anyone thinking about this DVD, yes, you should get it.

Achtung Baby is from a favorite Mel Brooks film, The Producers; Zooropa is a combination of Zoo and Europa.

What the...? Are these album titles? Where do they get this weird stuff (not just picking on U2, many other bands do it)? Achtung, Baby and Zooropa are album titles. Achtung is a German word meaning "warning" or "listen up!" The actual phrase comes from Mel Brook's The Producers. Zooropa is derived from the name of the first song on Achtung, Baby, entitlted "Zoo Station"(there is an explanation for that title, but first there isa a picture you need to see from ABs album art). Zooropa is a rather odd title, but there are others out there like it. *cough*Meteora*cough*, so you can't pick on them for it.

By the way, Dv, since you brought up these songs...
1. The version of "Wake Up Dead Man" that they sing on Elevation is abbreviated. A lot. That's only, like, a fourth of the song. The studio version builds in intensity and drama, so you're missing the best parts. =)
2. The album version of "Stay" is not acoustic, though I think I prefer the live version.
Anyway, just FYI.

U2 fans rejoice; the band will be releasing another concert DVD before the end of the year (early November, I believe). It's from the same tour as the Elevation disc, but this one was taped during their Slane Castle show (an abbreviated form of the concert appeared as a TV special).
Anyway, I've saw this show on TV, and I think it's an even better concert than the one on the first DVD. It's got a lot of U2 standards that, for some reason, don't appear on the Elevation DVD ("One," "Mysterious Ways," "All I Want is You," "Pride"), and a few of the songs are, in my opinion, of a higher quality than the ones that appeared on Elevation ("Elevation" and "With or Without You").
I can hardly wait.

I just watched the concert again, along with the making of documentary. The making of is cool. It had some clips from some of the other tours, like the famous 80s Red Rocks show, the Zoo TV and Popmart tours. Those last two were crazy looking. One thing I was wondering, from watching the concert again, is what the deal is with "The Fly"? Why does Bono do that evil sounding voice and bite the audience member? Is he doing some kind of devil/angel thing?

"The Fly" is a caricature of the stereotypical rockstar. Bono was often accused in the 80s of being egotistical and self-important, and so in the 90s he had fun with that by exaggerating it and making fun of himself.
That's where the song is coming from.
The narrator of the song is a rockstar who is calling his wife from a payphone in Hell. He has just had all the secrets of the universe revealed to him, but he's not mentally stable, so you have to sift through his little proverbs and decide for yourself which ones are true and which ones aren't.
