A completely charming, totally delightful album, and certainly the debut to beat in 2008... if you want to count it as a debut. More on that in my review!

Your link has some redundancies in it, so I had to take some extra bits out to get to the page. Just thought you might want to know.

Thank-you for making this topic.
Phylactery Factory is awesome. It's been at the top of my 08 journal for a while, and I don't see it stepping down real soon.

I'll check it out, Josh. I listened to a few clips, and I liked what I heard.

I love the music, but the vocals are kind of annoying me here and there. I'll give it more time, though.

Her vocals remind me a little of Joanna Newsom - an acquired taste I've thankfully acquired prior to listening to the album.

I can see that comparison, although I would say I like her vocals better than Joanna Newsom's.

Yeah, the comparison is fair, but I think Newsom is much more chirpy and shrill. I still dislike her vocals, but I like Casey's a lot.

Well, I wasn't arguing that she's a carbon-copy of Newsom's vocals (which I rather like, actually) - just that there are certain similarities in Casey's vocals that could put people off.

Newsom's vocals actually grew in me in a charmingly offbeat, toothless-witch-doctor-telling-you-a-cockamamie-story sort of way. It was the way the songs dragged on that I couldn't get over.

Hmm . . . as I recall, the songs are long, the melody lines pretty static, but there was continuously something to keep me interested in the mix. I don't want to put people off Casey's album, though - it's significantly more accessible and the songs are much better-suited to shorter attention spans poppier music fans.

Hmm . . . as I recall, the songs are long, the melody lines pretty static, but there was continuously something to keep me interested in the mix. You know my track record with repetition. I don't want to put people off Casey's album, though - it's significantly more accessible and the songs are much better-suited to shorter attention spans poppier music fans. Hey now, I can enjoy long songs. I just prefer for them to have enough different things happening throughout the song to justify its length. Anyway, I didn't mean to hijack this thread - it sounds like vocal similarity is the only place where the Joanna Newsom comparison would be valid. NP: "Two Weeks in Africa", Caedmon's Call

Look at them as stories. And actually, when I first listened, I immiately thought it sounded like Joanna Newsom gone jazz singer. It wasn't like that the whole CD, but I definately see the comparison.

Look at them as stories. Some of the lyrics are fascinating. That doesn't mean I think the stretched-out music is the best medium for them.

Well, to each his own I guess, but I personally feel that had she made them any shorter they would've been far to condensed considering the content.

They could have been the same length with more variance to the music.

Eh, it's off-topic, but I tend to side with "she gave it room to breathe" rather than "she stretched it out". It wasn't as if she went once through the musical elements and looped it, but it was very "tasteful" in the classical sense, musically.
In other words, I agree with Ian, but at the same time, I think you'd find more to like here, murlough.

I'm not saying she did anything wrong, I'm just indicated what would have made the record more engaging/enjoyable for me. You can't please everyone. I don't listen to a lot of classical music, either, so that may be part of the disconnect.

There is a new EP out called the Luniculaire EP. It's all in French this time. I'm listening to it right now, and I am very impressed. Do yourself a favor and track it down.
