Uhm. Gimme a minute...

They mostly just have random lines.

Like this from 'Boycott Hell'

[RAP]
Guess who coming through with a little disclaimer.
The tune's okay, but the words are gettin' lamer.
Ain't no saint can legitimatize.
Rhyming "pride" with "time" and "unionize."
See, I agree we outta boycott hell,
But we outta boycott dumb lyrics as well.

ROFL

Or this from the Breakfast Song:

Oh, rise up, Fruit Loop lovers -
Sing out sweet & low
With sthingys held high
We bid our brother, "Cheerio!"

But they have good lyrics too. I like In the Valley and Rescue. AND CORNELIUS! That one's fun.

Uhm. I like Belly of the Whale. lol, who couldn't like Veggietales?

I used to hate Live in Stereo, till I read the words properly. Now I like it. But I hate John Woo. It's just really annoying.

He Reigns is great.

Cornelius is a good song, and actually a lot of stuff from Thrive is pretty good. But I have to say that the most fun Newsboys song would be Love Liberty Disco.

Oops, my bad. The song isn't Valley, it's called Thrive. Nice song,  I had the entire Thrive album on repeat for four or five hours yesterday. But I wasn't in the room, so I only heard snatches of it lol. I drove my mum crazy.

It was great.

But, Vlad!, how can you have not heard John Woo if you've heard the Thrive album? 'Cos its like third to the end on it.

Uhm.

Hillsong United.

And... uh. I dunno. Lots of music makes me happy, but in different ways. I usually like slower, quieter worship music. But sometimes I just want to dance.

The Newsboys' worship albums are crap. That said, I enjoy "It Is You" and their cover of "In Wonder" a great deal. Basically, I don't mind the occasional worship song from them within the context of an album that is has more varied content.

Our Virtual Best-Of: Newsboys thread ( http://www.thephorum.net/index.php/topic,3048.0.html ) did a decent job of getting to some of the more obscure tracks that deserve mentioning (TMTYL gets all the attention, it seems, but "Beautiful Sound" is a great track too, and a worshippy one at that).

I like Thrive. It feels incomplete, but there are some solid songs on it.

Yeah. I think my initial enthusiasm for that record had more to do with the lack of better albums in my collection at the time. Maybe half of that album actually holds up under scrutiny, and for an album under 40 minutes, that's pretty lousy.

...and I think that they should have given "It Is You" to Petra like they originally planned.

I always thought "Beautiful Sound" was a highly underrated song, due to it being on an album that was largely panned.

When was the last Newsboys album (non-compilation) that ran over 40 minutes? Have you checked the playtime on TMTYL lately?

...and I think that they should have given "It Is You" to Petra like they originally planned.

Then I would have never heard it. Sure, I thought it was drop-dead boring on first listen, and the lyrics are still a bit lacking (I'm not so convinced that a song getting written in 15 minutes proves it's a "God thing" - if God gave you a song, He might give you an idea on how to revise it after sleeping on it, too), so it's really all about their execution on that one. The song has one wallop of a crescendo once it gets going. I'm not so confident it would have worked the same in petra's clumsy hands - they may have been one of the first to do a "Christian rock worship album", but they were also one of the many to assume later on that being a Christian rock band and doing worship songs meant that you had to make your best attempt to sound Adult Contemporary.

In any event, "It Is You" is a song that I'd likely not have noticed had it first appeared on an album with a bunch of other "worship songs". It stands out because, at the time, it was an unusual track for the Newsboys.

That's really true. Some songs you can write in like 5 minutes, others a half an hour, hours, days, years... I think it's the best thing not to always just write the whole song if an idea for the songs comes to your mind; because then we try to force the lyrics, and it's not as good as it could be. At the same time, you don't want to lose the idea for the song. It's kind of tricky to decide. I think people should pray before/during/after they write songs, even when the ideas come rapidly. And I think everyone should always analyze the songs after they're written, and look for ways to revise, edit, and display more creativity in the songs.

You can always write down what comes to your mind at the spur of the moment, then revise it later when you've had some time to think it through. There's something to be said for the "train of thought", and it can be interesting as a writing exercise, but that doesn't mean it's ready for public consumption as is. (It's a valid expression of worship either way, but not necessarily one that's worth paying money to hear.)

I never would have heard "It Is You" if it wasn't from the Newsboys either.

Well, duh. That wasn't my point. I was saying something more like, "If it had first appeared on one of the Newsboys' worship albums, I likely wouldn't have become familiar with it." (A live version was on Adoration, but it first appeared on Thrive the year before.)

I think my favorite song from the Newsboys would have to be "I'm Not Ashamed"

Funny story - I had a friend in college who was talking about that song when he was making fun of himself from a few years back when he was a very new Christian. He mentioned that he used to sing along at the top of his lungs to his favorite songs while in his dorm room, but that he became a bit embarassed with this particular song, so it would come out something like (really loud) "I'M NOT ASHAMED TO SPEAK THE NAME OF..." (muffled) "...Jesus Christ."

My favorite Newsboys song is "Lost the Plot". Also up there are "Elle G.", "Something Beautiful", "WooHoo", and "Beautiful Sound".

I like "Break" a lot, too. Also "Good Stuff" and the title track from Love Liberty Disco. Some of the rest is melodic goodness but the lyrics started to get a little stoopid (not that they aren't in a few of the tracks I like, but sometimes that's easier to ignore than others).

Also, regarding solid Newsboys songs from other albums, I think "Always" is a pretty powerful song to anyone who's ever had a dad walk out on them.
