I think Coldplay has done better in that department.

Where? Up until this album I've considered Chris Martin a pretty shoddy lyricist, and while the lyrics here aren't exactly the cream of the crop, I found them to be a sign that Martin is capable of more than I've given him credit for.

I like the lyrics on this album. Not sure what the problem is here.

After devoting some specific listening time to this album with no distractions, I've changed my opinion.  I originally stated that I felt this was the 2nd best after Parachutes.  Scratch that.  This album is the best album they've done.  I'm not sure if it'll end up in my top 10 but probably top 20 for 2008.

I like what they're going for with the lyrics (Biblical references suit them nicely, something I probably wouldn't say about most bands), but there is still a lot of room for improvement as far as poetic poise.

Overall, I think this is their best album, but I might enjoy Parachutes a little bit more.

Rise!  RISE!!!

Apparently Yusuf Islam thinks "Viva la Vida" is a song he wrote, too.  I wonder if he'll then put two and two together and sue Satriani also.  I wonder who will in turn will sue Cat Stevens.

The Flaming Lips, of course.

This whole thing is patently ridiculous. Seriously, people want to lay claim to one of the most basic chord progressions in rock history, as well as a melody following it that doesn't take a rocket scientist to come up with? Come on. Get your heads out of your collective asses, people.

I love The Flaming Lips, but even I have to admit he had a case in "Father & Son" vs. "Fight Test".  This one is a bit more sketchy and, actually, I don't see where it says Mr. Islam is planning to sue at all.

Yeah. I looked up the Cat Stevens song, and it was way too close for comfort.

But there are now at least three groups/artists who have said "No, Coldplay stole that song from us! I think that just serves to underscore how easy of a melody it is to come up with out of the blue."

Yeah, at this point we can safely say that it's a coincidence.

The entire notion of suing over part of a song is absurd; technically, by these standards, Bob Dylan owes a small fortune to Ovid. And Howlin' Wolf, for that matter. And the entire CCM industry will be paying off their debt to U2 until kingdom come.

The suits are apparently only worth it if the person you want to sue is making more off of the music than you are. (That renders all of the potential 2 suits frivolous.)

Lawsuits over these things are tricky.  "Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief", right?

Indeed. U2 has made a career out of stealingpaying homage to the best of 'em.

That said, I can tell a blatant ripoff when I hear one. This is not it.
