This is an impossible topic I realize, so list any of your candidates that leap to mind if there isn't that particular one.

Animal Collective - Water Curses is that particular one for me.  Especially impressive considering they had the best song last year, For Reverend Green.

I'm gonna go with UR So Gay. It's a deep and multi-faceted song that correlates being a loser with being a homosexual.

LOL, I was just listening to that song today. As offensive as it is, I do have to admit that the line about the Happy Meal makes me chuckle. If it were just a song about being an indie wannabe loser, it'd actually be pretty funny, so it's too bad about the "Gay" thing.

Best song of the year so far? For my money, it's "The Sky Is Falling" by Thrice. On second thought, it's "Mirrorball" by Elbow. No wait, it's "Viva la Vida" by Coldplay. Or how about "Safe to Land" by Jars of Clay? Argh, I'm having a difficult time with this.

Well, I'd use, "abomination to good music", where she is concerned, but yeah.

Mine is The Tallest Man on Earth's "The Gardner," but, as far as radio singles go, I might have to agree with murlough's Coldplay pick, Joe Whatshisname be damned.

I didn't differentiate between radio singles and non, but it's nice to know that my personal favorite song of the year just so happens to be a worldwide smash hit.

As for Satriani, I listened to his instrumental track that Coldplay allegedly copied. I already commented on why I don't think the similarities are close enough to warrant a copyright infringement lawsuit - to me the chord progression and melodic cues are so straightforward and obvious that they may as well be public domain (meaning somebody likely came up with a similar melody before Satriani). Having said that, the Satriani track is pretty cool. But it's obscure enough that I don't think Coldplay would really get much of a boost from riding on its coattails. (If anything, now people who have never heard of Satriani might check him out, so really, he should just shut the hell up and enjoy the publicity.)

I might have to go with TVotR's "Family Tree" as my song of the year choice, but there are so many on that album I would have no issue choosing.

"Dancing Choose" will likely be in my full list of 100 songs when I post it at the end of the year. Stupid title, great song.

I would rather get the albums I have graded than try to find 100 songs to then put in order.  That would just be a quick path to headache for me.

Pitchfork did it, though, and it's not bad.  The ability to listen to the songs in the list is a nice touch.

The specific order is abritrary for me beyond about 20. At that point it's just good to have 'em in a list. But you know me, I get a kick out of listmaking.

Pitchfork did it, though, and it's not bad.  The ability to listen to the songs in the list is a nice touch.

That must have taken a lot of time, so while there's no way I can listen to all 100, I'll be sure to at least read about 'em.

As for the ones on their list that I already know, my Top 100 list will likely have the following in common with Pitchfork's:

"Blue Ridge Mountains", Fleet Foxes (such an unlikely pick from an overall solid album, but it happens to be my 2nd fave on the album, so I'm stoked!)
"Gobbledigook", Sigur Ros (hmmm, never realized the similarity to Dave Matthews' "Grey Street", but I notice it now)
"M79", Vampire Weekend (not to be confused with M83!)

The M83 song is a good one, btw, but it really does sound very 80s (in a good way, IMO).

They place Street Flash (Animal Collective) rather than Water Curses.

w. t. f.

edit: btw, here's my list:
1. Animal Collective - Water Curses
2. Shugo Tokumaru - La La Radio
3. TV on the Radio - Family Tree

I'm surprised to see "DLZ" so low on the list. It's most likely going to make top 5 on my theoretical list that will never be made.

Everyone seems to have different favorites from that album. "Golden Age" is my second fave from that one, so I'm glad it made the cut.

Maybe a top 25 would be reasonable, admittedly I've not even listened to almost everything they listed before #20 or so except for a handful.

But otherwise...I think they did an AWFUL list.  Most of all with picking "Blind" as the year's best track.  That song is...well, it's awful!  I chose to skip buying the album after listening to that song months ago when iTunes offered it as a free download.

Well, I don't care about order, or even that I like all the songs.  I just noticed a fair amount that I like a great deal.

And as always, they include a great deal of variety in their list... or at least they give that illusion, until you start thinking about country, blues, jazz, folk, singer-songwriter, mainstream pop and rock...

For the most part, critical publications and websites specialize, and Pitchfork happens to specialize in the kind of things they have on their lists, which makes sense.  I don't expect anyone to pretend to be well-versed in genres that don't appeal as much to them.  I'm a little disappointed in Pitchfork, in particular, when they try too hard to flex their muscle outside their specialties.

I don't have a best song to contribute, but this thread reminded me of these Questionable Content tweets:

martenreed There needs to be a word for "I recognize that [band name] is critically acclaimed, and rightfully so, but I still don't like them."
dorabianchi @martenreed That word is "Pitchforky." As in, "Animal Collective have some good songs but overall they're a little Pitchforky for my taste."
penelopegaines @dorabianchi the literary equivalent would be "Pynchony."
martenreed @dorabianchi man making fun of Pitchfork is SO two years ago

I dunno, I thought it was funny.

I like "Pitchforky". That's a good adjective. Though I'm not guaranteed to dislike something just because they like it. But then I don't think labeling something as such is necessarily a diss at Pitchfork - it's just a good way of summing up a respect for something that is more academic than out of a sense of genuine enjoyment.

If someone coined "bloopy" to mean "too smart for me", I'm pretty sure I'd take it as a compliment.

Nice try, but I don't think that's what it means. I think it's more, "I respect what they're trying to do, but it ain't my cup o' tea." It's a way of saying you don't really like something but you can't fault the artist for it. No disparity of intelligence levels implied.

Well, I'm not saying that's its meaning, but the form is similar.  It is, if anything, a compliment to them that they are able to appreciate the things they do.  I know if I respect something, I really want to be able to enjoy it, and may even envy those that do derive enjoyment from something I know intellectually is good.  In my case, it honestly doesn't happen much.

Every now and then I have that same envy, but most of the time, I just assume it's one of those "different strokes for different folks" things. I've been round and round with this discussion enough to know that sometimes, different people are just wired to respond to different things. So I generally don't lose any sleep over it.

The fast cuts made sense, but a lot of them were so fast that it may as well have just been random colors, because the images made little impact. It's like the whole video was filmed in shaky cam and then scrambled.

Wouldn't call it best song, but here's an easy summary of Billboard's most popular songs of 2008 (courtesy DJ Earworm). United State of Pop 2008
