I mentioned this briefly in my blog, but I didn't know if people here knew about it, and I know some of us like or used to like the Dave Matthews Band, so here's the sad news:

Quote
We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program.

It seems that the band plans to continue without him, and they did have touring saxophone player Jeff Coffin filling in for LeRoi while he was still in the hospital, but I don't know if they plan to make him a permanent member. Trumpet player Rashawn Ross has also been hanging out with the band. So we'll see where it goes. It will definitely not be the same without LeRoi. He was the "jazzy" element of the band, and when he played the flutes and/or whistles on songs like "Say Goodbye" and "Bartender", it was absolutely gorgeous.

I've known about it but, as you guys know, thephorum and my IP are incompatible...

RIP LeRoi.   Jeff Coffin is a great player.  I'm not sure if they'd make him a fulltime member since he is already a fulltime member of Bela Fleck & The Flecktones.

Hell, they should just join forces. Fleck's contributions on Before These Crowded Streets were awesome.

I've always contested that Bela Fleck & The Flecktones is, musicianship and talent-wise, the best band (collection of musicians) in the past 15 years.  Freaking brilliant.  Bela, Victor, Jeff, and Futureman (ala LeRoi Wooten, Victor's brother) - All musical greats!

Ah. Wouldn't want to drag those guys down by putting them all in the DMB, then. But they're definitely gonna need a new sax player if they want to keep going. Otherwise they won't be able to play a lot of their old stuff any more. And LeRoi is not gonna be easy to replace.

I couldn't even hazard a guess at who I think is the best band in terms of musical talent. I can say that my favorite in that area is Iona, but that's a completely different type of band. Dream Theater would be up there if not for the embarrassing bombast of their last album.
