Anyone get a chance to check out the new Metallica album? With the travel I've been doing I haven't purchased it yet, but I've heard some of the songs on the radio. I think part of me was hoping for a return to the thrashy days of Master of Puppets, but from the two or three tracks I've listened to so far, James Hetfield is doing a lot more singing than growling these days.

Also, Unforgiven Three? Really? Is this a song or a summer blockbuster? Do we really need to number them?

I haven't bought new releases in so long that I'm not sure what the protocol is. Once I figure out a way to get the tracks both legally and DRM-free then I'll grab them.

In the RMA thread, I commented that this may be their best album, musically speaking, since ...And Justice For All.  I don't enjoy Metallica that much but I really like this album.

First listen seems promising. The radio tracks were less thrashy than their norm, but the album definitely has some very acceptable Metallica on there. I meant to bring it in to work today to put the tracks on my work computer and listen further, but of course I forgot. I'll try to remember tomorrow.

I think the copy I had was just bad.  I listened to it again, with far better results.

I'm definitely enjoying it. I like the tone, and it feels a lot more like classic Metallica than St. Anger. I'm impressed.

Just a side note (resurrection of frankenthread for the win)...

The original mix for this album has the volume ridiculously cranked, and it sounds like it was precompressed. If you listened to it and were unimpressed by the mixing, I recommend the Guitar Hero version. They remixed it from scratch, and it sounds much better. I've already bought the album, so I feel reasonably morally justified in downloading the Guitar Hero versions of the tracks from Bittorrent. It's not quite "night and day", but it's at least "evening and noon". I'll upload some comparison tracks to the pub when I get home, assuming I remember.

Bought the vinyl.   music

It's not a problem.

On the music itself, it's not up to their 80s standards, but it's better than anything since at least their self-titled..

The vinyl release fixes some of the clipping problems, but it's, according to what I've seen, still not as good as the remastered GH tracks (see here for an explanation by someone who knows more than me about this sort of thing).

When I upload the comparison tracks you can decide whether you agree with this assessment or not.

Totally agree. I've accepted that Metallica will never be the same band they were in the 80's, but I'm not totally disappointed in the album.

Yeah, I've heard the GH version is the best-sounding available, but I don't music game at all (it seems an expensive habit in terms of accessories).  I could download them I suppose, but I'm not that committed to the album, really.

The vinyl doesn't sound bad at all to me, but the original rip I obtained for my iPod sounded horrendous.

Uploaded some comparison tracks to the Pub. The mp3s marked (album) come from the CD release, and the mp3s marked (GHIII) come from a co-worker who got them from a torrent on the Internet. For extra lulz, take a look at the waveforms on each and marvel at the clipping.
