I can't help but wonder how much Van Halen people other than Wildcat and Wanderer are familiar with...but this is, sadly, not the thread for it. (I just have Van Halen, 1984, and Diver Down used and cheap from the Salvation Army).
Those Beatles remasters I was stoked about are too damn expensive. I'm disappointed.

Yeah-- it's all culled from the first night of their 20th Anniversary concert from December 2008, which was apparently PHENOMENAL. Looks like the album has a bunch of classic Good Dog Bad Dog cuts, a few Eve standouts, and even some goodies from their first two albums, which only the most hardcore fans will really be familiar with.

It's all from their first four albums-- though of course, it was recorded just half a year ago, so it's with their new line-up.

For me the most interesting aspect of a live setlist is how it juxtaposes the new with the old. If the new appears to be marginalized in favor of the old, that usually makes me feel like the band isn't that confident in their newer material and they just want to play the hits for the audience (which I know is not the case for OtR - they seem fully confident in their new material but wanted to set aside some time to get in the wayback machine, which is fine because they're not some hits-oriented band that was popular back in the day and is now fizzling out or anything). If the old appears to be marginalized in favor of the new, it makes me feel like the band's abandoned some aspect of their old selves. Anyhow, since I don't know the vast majority of these songs, I'd really be more interested in a live document from OtR that shows off their material from The Trumpet Child, since I've already heard pretty good live renditions of most of the stuff I like from their albums before that dating back to GDBD.

Volume 3 was mostly Trumpet Child stuff; Volume 2 is heavy on Ohio, a few covers, and a few Christmas songs; volume 1 is Drunkard's Prayer. And of course, Changes Come is mostly Ohio with a couple of Films... tracks. So, there are plenty of options for live OtR recordings.

Yeah, it's an annual series. Generally, it focuses on whatever the new material was from the previous year-- but of course, they didn't have a new album in 2008, hence the focus on older material, most of which they haven't recorded live before.

That makes all kinds of sense, and it was a good call. If I were familiar with their old stuff, I'd probably want to hear it.

Just got the following update from Sleeping At Last on Facebook: >>>THE NEW ALBUM IS CALLED... "STORYBOARDS" After months of debate, we've finally decided on Storyboards. We tossed around a zillion names throughout the making of this album and it wasn't until we finished it all up that we knew "Storyboards" was just right! >>>PRE-ORDERS/ EARLY RELEASE - THIS MONTH! Okay, so we've been super excited to announce this for a while now.. We decided that before the end of the month (JULY), we are going to start taking pre-orders for Storyboards, and ALL who pre-order the new CD will also receive a very, very early download of the ENTIRE album - IMMEDIATELY!!! For $14 (includes shipping!), you will receive an immediate MP3 download of our new album, Storyboards.. you will ALSO receive the physical CD, shipped to you as soon as it's in our hands! (sometime in Aug. when it arrives from the manufacturer) So, this means that by the end of the month, our new album will finally be available! We are sooo excited for you to hear it! We will let you know as soon as the pre-order/early release goes live! Our "official" release date will happen in a couple months from now and will include the usual suspects: iTunes, LaLa, Amazon.com, etc. >>>GEOFF BENZING & COVER ART UNVEILING! We're so excited to finally take the wraps off of Geoff Benzing's incredible original painting that is Storyboards' cover art! We can't wait for you to see the rest of the album's artwork as well (which is a continuation of the gorgeous cover piece) To check it out, visit: http://sleepingatlast.wordpress.com/

Man, I thought I was the only person in the world who had that album. (I even discovered it about five years late. It was one of the first gifts my wife gave me when we first started dating, so, tons of sentimental value there.) Solid stuff, if you exclude the vocal tracks. I'd even be fine with a solo album from Scott. But I'll take what I can get from either Dente.

I have the Keaggy King Dente album also. I've had it since 1997, mostly because I already had the Ashton Becker Dente album, and thought I'd give this a try. I'd also like another album from Kennedy Kirkpatrick Madeira and Sprague.

That was why my wife bought the Keaggy/King/Dente album back when it was new, but she didn't know it was mostly guitar geek stuff, so I think it collected dust for those five years until she passed it on to me!

Me too. I will make a note to do so this weekend. I can't believe that after all the things we've had to disagree about regarding music, we actually landed in the same place on a mostly instrumental CCM album from the 90's, of all things! My favorite tracks on Invention have always been "53 Days in June" and "Angel Treads". Yours?

Well I was pretty young when I listened to it, so the vocal tracks tended to grab my attention more. My fav was "Something, Somewhere", and was probably my favorite song period at the time. When I listen next I'll probably be able to appreciate the instrumental tracks a lot more.

I wonder how she'll be now that she is married to Shane Barnard. Maybe his songwriting will rub off on her. THAT CRADLE ROBBER! (He's 33, she's 20). I never got into Shane & Shane, and most songwriters I liked before they were married have tended to either not change or change for the worse after getting married. So I won't hold my breath.

I was never big on him either way. I was actually thinking of how I didn't like Derek Webb for a while after he got married... I really related to Caedmon's songs that he wrote such as "Table for Two" and "Somewhere North", and after he and Sandra hooked up, his role in the band got scaled back and then he left the band to go solo, and I could appreciate the writing on a theological level but to me it didn't have as much "zing" to it. Anyway, that's all been rendered null and void with Derek's newest album.

from Andrew Osenga...news about him, and about Caedmon's, minus him... I was not in Houston this week.
I was not in Houston this week. Caedmon’s Call however, was there, starting to put together a new project. It was my decision to sit this one out, and I feel it was the right one.
Basically, I finished what was scheduled with Caedmon’s through the end of last year (and a couple things earlier this year) and after that dove headfirst into production/songwriting/artist stuff in Nashville. It’s been good. When the band started talking about a new project I thought about it, prayed about it, looked at my schedule and my goals and realized: this wasn’t a project for me.
This year off the road in Nashville has been a pretty powerful one for me. I’ve felt a new foundation solidifying under my feet. Still not sure what all it means, but I know it’s good, and that it means pursuing some new things.
Seems like that decision was a good one for the band as well, freeing them up to pursue something they couldn’t have done with me. I think it will be a great project and I look forward to seeing what it becomes.
There is no ill will, none at all. Just a matter of moving on. Knowing the history of this band, and the way I am, I don’t imagine never working alongside these friends again. The success rate of people quitting this band is shockingly low.
Instead I’ll be playing a few select solo shows in the Fall, moving into a new, more permanent studio space, producing and writing with a few other artists and trying to finish a quartet of random solo projects. I just got my mailing list working again, so sign up and I’ll keep you up to date.
Anyway, that’s the long and short of it. I’ve been blessed and honored to be a part of the Caedmon’s story for six and a half years now. I want to thank you guys for listening and accepting me and thank the band for inviting me in and loving me.
The best part about Caedmon’s being the family that they are is that you always remain a part of it. That’s a great thing to know, and a testament to who the band is as people. I can’t wait to hear what they come up with next.
