In other news... in fact, pretty much the ONLY news that could possibly be as exciting as new Dylan...
Joe Henry and his band hit the studio TODAY. I think they're going to bang a new record out by the end of this week!

Yeah, it is a good album cover - looks potentially iconic, even. The driver, barely in the shot, is a nice touch. As I mentioned in another thread, I really like this album cover. The album's pretty good, too.

Well, yeah, pretty much. I think it's a technically beautiful photograph, a provocative image, and I think it's both very sexy but also kinda funny, and maybe even a little creepy. And, as you say, it feels like it could be iconic. I also like that it's very different from most Dylan album covers.

Wow. First they go indie (well, sort of), then they make a bid to win over the audiophiles. What's next, a review in Pitchfork?

I don't think it's stupid, but I don't think it's a timeless work of art or anything, either. I'm sure it probably does a fine job of representing the attitude of the music contained within the album that it adorns.

As I said, it's a well-composed photograph, as I think those into photography at this board can attest. It has a certain appealing edge that seems more natural than worn out. Whether its timeless or not is just guessing at best, but it looks like it could be the sort of image that reaches classic status. In other words, Dylan knows how to choose an album cover. (duh?)

I like the photo pretty well, but the type kind of ruins it for me. I don't see whay they felt the need to take up half the cover with it, and that rough look on the letters is just really overdone.

Those covers that bloop posted are all classics-- and I would add the Blood on the Tracks one, even the Slow Train Coming one-- but they also demonstrate that this new cover is very un-Dylan in some ways; namely, in that it doesn't feature his likeness anywhere on it, which is unusual for him (Modern Times being a noted exception).
I really like the retro vibe of the photo and of the lettering, which fits well with the way the music is being described.

That's unexpected, and worlds away from their last album cover. I like it, though, even if the vintage look probably doesn't describe the music accurately. NP: "Seasons", Steven Delopoulos

Excited to hear a new track from the Future of Forestry EP in concert last night; disappointed to learn that it's only an EP. Come on guys, it's been over two years. We want an ALBUM already.

new album from Ben Harper & Relentless7 This is his first album, other than solo, with a backing band other than the Innocent Criminals. First single is interesting. I've always supported Harper so I'm eagerly awaiting this new album.

God to know that Barenaked Ladies are planning to continue as a four-piece and record some new music this year (according to Ed Robertson's comments in the live show I just downloaded). Though I will say, that in terms of covering vocal duties in live shows, Steven Page is not easily replaced.

I just read that House of Heroes is going to release an EP of Beatles cover tunes.
Edit: That is on top of the acoustic EP coming out on 4/7. However, the acoustic EP (The Acoustic End) is the two new songs on the physical store release of the album and a "Violent Femmes-esque rendition of "If."

I'll be admittedly behind the curve on that one, not being up on a lot of Beatles classics. (Though I probably recognize more of them than I think I do by the titles.) However, a good song is a good song, and HoH is a talented band; I can't imagine them screwing this up. Then again, I'll admit to not liking Mae's version of "A Day in the Life", and my reasons for such have less to do with the band covering the song, and more to do with the noise factor which I understand to be an integral factor of the original song (and quite an innovation at the time it was recorded). To me it feels like, "Gee, you wrote two separate song snippets and couldn't figure out how to attach one to the other, so you covered it up with a massive crescendo of noise." I see how it's musical. I see why some consider it brilliant. But I don't find it (or most songs that follow that general template) to be particularly listenable.

Seriously. That's a long time in between albums. Thankfully someone still believes in full-lengths albums that you can really get immersed in. American Idiot had the quality content to justify its length, so I think this one looks promising. NP: "Good Morning Fire Eater", Copeland

As someone who held and holds a lot of the same views on American culture that the band attempted to express, I found myself embarrassed to agree with points expressed so ham-handedly and, well, idiotically. I also felt like the album found a sub-moronic band managing to jettison the only thing that made them at all worth listening to- their youthfulness, sarcasm, fun, and complete lack of self-importance or seriousness in favor of, well, trying to sound like they weren't morons.
