Or, which living novelist is most likely to receive canonical status, i.e., be included in literary anthologies 50 years from now?

My vote: Toni Morrison.

Toni Morrison is likely a good pick.  Maybe Gabriel Garcia Marquez, or are we only looking at English?

No, Marquez works fine. And in all fairness, I've seen both Morrison AND Garquez in anthologies already, though it'll be interesting to see whether they're still there a few decades down the line.

But in all seriousness, I've never read anything by Toni Morrison but I wouldn't argue against her. I'm not sure who else to add.

You're serious?  John Grisham is a blockbuster novelist, not the kind for serious literature nerds.

Same for the Left Behind boys, although they are a notch below Grisham.

*shrug*

To be perfectly honest, I'm making stuff up. For all the hundreds, maybe thousands of books I've read, I have no idea what I'm talking about here Smiley

I'll second Toni Morrison and raise you a Cormac McCarthy.

I haven't read any Toni Morrison...but I think I will look into it. I do like Cormac McCarthy very much.
