The triangle area is expecting TWO INCHES of snow! Businesses and schools are preemptively closing. People are raiding the supermarkets. Civilization (or at least as close as Morrisville gets to civilization, which is still admittedly pretty far away) will utterly cease once the crazy white stuff starts falling from the sky. Crazy, I say. I know the horribly witty "southern town braces for end of world in snowflake form" thing has been done before, but the attitude of people around here to winter weather never ceases to amaze me. I'm from freaking Tennessee and I know how to drive on snow. The joke will be on me when I drive in to work on the snow tomorrow and get in a wreck.

The best part of the article I linked: === Four years ago to the day, between 0.5 and 2 inches fell on central North Carolina, catching everyone by surprise. Roads clogged up with workers and students going home early, clogging roads at the same time they turned icy and making some commutes last more than eight hours. About 3,000 Wake County students were stranded at schools overnight. === Seriously? Students were "stranded" due to two freaking inches? Blacksburg got two feet at least twice during my five years at Virginia Tech, and nobody got stranded anywhere (they did cancel classes because apparently it was so cold that the (diesel) compression starters on the buses wouldn't work, and about half the campus (including me at the time) depends on the bus system).

Up here in NY, they don't even cancel school unless the wind chill is below -20.

That's a weird distinction. I mean, when I was in the 'burg the wind chill would sometimes drop that low since we were in a valley and we got a lot of cold mountain air, but just because the wind is whipping through your bones doesn't mean it's dangerous to go to class.

Much to my surprise, we actually DID end up getting snow in Charlotte-- 4 inches so far, and it's still coming down. But it's been relatively warm here recently, so the roads aren't nearly cold enough for any of it to stick. Still, it looks pretty, and my wife got off of work, so we get to stay home and watch inaguration festivities.

Notre Dame almost literally never closes due to snow. Last week we got over 2 feet in 2 days, the actual temp was -19 with a windchill of less than -32, but they didn't so much as acknowledge the weather. Ho hum.

I wish I had brought my camera to work, since the view from the balcony into the woods is fantastic.
I'm also the only member of my team actually at work today, but I'm starting to doubt the wisdom of that, since it's still going all-out on the snow thing. I'm going to eat serious crow if, after making fun of my co-workers for being too wimpy to drive in, I end up getting stuck here because Morrisville's one snowplow hasn't hit this area yet.

I think most of Cali is like that, except for areas like the sierras or locations that commonly receive cooler temperatures (which usually are higher elevations). 60 degrees??? That's a nice temperature; but most everyone in Cali dresses like it's sub-zero climate when the thermometer hits that point (even foreigners (or people from other states) who used to literally live in sub-zero climates. That's mainly due to the fact that they become accustom to the weather of the environment they're currently in). Personally, I think it's ludicrous though. However, I also think it depends on each persons circulatory system, not only the environment they've become accustom to.

It can get chilly in the Bay Area (even sometimes in San Francisco in the middle of the summer), so while folks up there still get their share of sunny weather, they're at least a little better prepared for cold, rainy gloom. Here things seem to come to a screeching halt when it rains.

That's true. The temperatures on the coastlines can be cool on a fairly regular basis, since they receive the jet stream which flows off the Pacific ocean. But other places in NorCal aren't as prepared for that type of weather, since it's not usually a common occurance (except for some winters'; and depending on the location (such as the sierras and higher elevations, as I stated earlier)). For instance, various valleys in the north aren't as accustom to cold weather. But the closer you get to the Oregon boarder the more tolerant people usually are of colder weather (I'd say, specifically, within 200 miles of the boarder). Yeah, there really isn't a vast majority of residents way north in Cali. But yeah, the south is more susceptible to that type of a reaction to cooler climate. Though, I know many people in NorCal who react the exact same way.

Relatively chilly; I still recall going for a walk down El Camino Real in a t-shirt and sandals in February.

One amusing thing about snow is that it leaves a record. Driving in to work today I could see car tracks going off of the road all over the place. There was one point where (on a back road leading to the office) a car had slid off the road and the driver continued driving on the grass beside the road for about a quarter mile before nearly running into a speed limit sign and realizing what was going on.
I also saw evidence of sledding.

Nah, it's just a field at the side of the road. If it was someone's front yard then it would be a bit more unfortunate.

We actually got our second accumulation of snow this winter! I might actually have to take back some of my mockery of North Carolina not having a proper winter (yes, those to whom "a proper winter" means snow from November through April can laugh; the rest of us will get our revenge tomorrow when you're shoveling your driveway for the 61st consecutive day this year). The entrance to my neighborhood looked really pretty. This time around it didn't affect the roads very much. That's my favorite kind of snow: enough to make everything look nice, but not enough to make driving especially hazardous. (I did say "especially" hazardous; as is their wont, the North Carolinians still found a way. I saw one dude who wound up in a ditch while I was on my way to work, and apparently I-540 saw its share of fender benders).

We got 6-7" at our house. And, of course, most of it melted today and the low tonight is supposed to be 15. So tomorrow morning, I think I'll pack my ice skates to get to work.

Yeah, I think Charlotte got hit harder than we did. The roads were free of black ice (no, not that black ice) by 9am this morning, and I'm pretty sure the snow is melting as I write this.

OH NOES! FRAKE ATTACK 2009 isn't over yet. As I sit here I am watching snowflakes approximately the size of a Honda Civic falling leisurely past the window. North Carolina drivers everywhere have immediately commenced ramming telephone poles and purchasing canned bean soup (because if you're snowed in you definitely want to be eating a lot of bean soup). I have to drive to Raleigh on Saturday evening, so if it's still failtastic I'm going to be upset. I don't mind playing bumper cars with the van, but since I'm driving my dad's car right now I would rather keep the crazies away from it :/

UPDATE!!!!!!!111oneoneone
I got this e-mail: From: Boss' boss Sent: 1:29 pm Subject: Go home if you are in RTP
Snow is falling, so if you still haven’t left, go home and work from there.
===
I refuse to work from home, so I just stayed. About 2:10 the snow stopped falling. It just looks sort of wet outside; you wouldn't even know it had snown (ok, I know it's 'snowed' rather than 'snown', but I like the latter better).
Many Bothans North Carolinians died to bring us this information.
