We tried to do this through ftp, so I'm going to try a more basic approach until that glorious day when Vlad gets the ftp server working beautifully.  Basically, I'm opening up a folder in my hard drive , labelled "The Pub", that you can upload and download to share a song or two that you've been enjoying.  As Vlad appropriately mentioned, it is not intended as an endorsement of piracy, but as a "try before you buy" system, so do not share entire albums.  The naming convention for the files put there has generally been
(user name) artist name - song title.mp3/ogg/whatever (just keep it lossy, please).

Address:  http://phub.doesntexist.org:1015/
user:  thephorum
pw:  thephorum

You may notice other folders in the root menu.  If you want access, just message me, and I'll probably let you in.

Don't bookmark this address, as it is bound to change from time to time as my IP changes (as I said, I'm keeping it very basic).  This page will be updated with new addresses.  There are bound to be issues going this route, but hopefully, it'll work out.

Ok, go!

Thanks for doing this. I will put a few songs up later (do you have a limit on how many songs a person should have up at one time?), as well as downloading the stuff you recommended to me.

One or two songs seems reasonable.  I'd say three as a maximum.

I put the port number right in the address line.  Just clicking the link should work.  I just uploaded something from work to see how it works out.

Might be an access issue on my end, then. I'll try from home later.

I'm uploading a track from the Elijah Wyman album I reviewed, which is really a great album and everyone should check it out.

Also a couple from those free Iron & Wine songs he has for download on his website.

*edit* Just realized my computer ripped the cd as wma! Gah!

Thanks bloop! I really do have "getting the real pub working" still on my to-do list, but there are some necessary steps that are there first which I haven't gotten to yet.

Port 1015 is used by a trojan and some workplaces (such as mine) block it. (ref http://www.auditmypc.com/port/tcp-port-1015.asp). I can access from home.

I suggest dyndns; that's what the old pub used. It's free, and there are clients for Windows, Mac, and Linux that will update your IP automatically when it changes. That way you don't have to mess with IP addresses.

I chose a random port, and opened it up on my router.  What are the odds?

Maybe this is me failing at using the user interface but I can't really figure out how to rename the songs :/

Anyway, my uploads:
Shonen Knife: Giant Kitty
I was introduced to this band by Tim Bray, quite possibly the most improbable source to be introduced to a band by, but he mentioned that they toured with Nirvana and were an actual good Japanese rock band, so I checked them out. They just sound really happy to be singing and the music is all over the place: she sings about how she gets lost and sings about her new haircut and sings about a spider she saw on her deck, but my favorite song from the Genki Shock album is the final one, Giant Kitty. I know most of the words, though some of them elude me, but it's a pretty funny song and very much exemplifies the band's character.

Leaves' Eyes: Farewell Proud Men
Scandinavian power metal for the win. I really like the singer's voice and vikings are awesome. My only complaint about this album is that the volume was set so loud that a lot of the subtlety in the music is lost, which happens a lot these days. It's not all bad, though, since I've really grown to like this album while at work and the wall o' noise definitely keeps distractions out. All in all I would prefer it to be mastered at a more appropriate level, though  -_-

Well, since I don't know what I'm doing, if you want to rename the songs, do so before uploading them.   :ρ

(I changed the titles of the songs from here, but that's as simple for me as going into explorer to do it)

I can get in from home; that's good enough.

Do you care how many songs I attempt to download at once? Firefox limits me to 6 and then queues the rest - if that's eating up your bandwidth, I'll see about throttling it to 2 or 3 at a time. It's just nice to set 'em all to download and then let 'em come in at their own pace.

I don't mind if you download more than one at a time, but you might be down to a rather slow speed if someone else is trying to do the same.

btw, I think I'll have to delete from my end as well.

I downloaded the Neko Case song, the Devil Never Sleeps song from Iron & Wine, and Out of Order.
* I like Neko Case and I liked that song
* The other two aren't really my type of thing.
** The Devil Never Sleeps did nothing to change my opinion of Iron & Wine, which is that I have nothing against them but I don't really dig that sort of music.
** I hadn't heard of Fiction Family but there was little in that song to make me want to get to know them better. Again, not really my scene.

Standard disclaimer, reiterated here for those just tuning in: I'm not really into music and most people here have realized by now that my opinions should be taken with a grain of salt the size of a Clydesdale. I will probably dis your song, but I expect you to dis mine too Smiley

The funny thing is, I haven't even listened to the Neko Case song yet, and I'm the one that put it in my pub folder.

Iron & Wine is a solo artist.  Confusing, I know.

I didn't know that, but it wouldn't change my semantics. I refer to bands as plural even if it's a one-member band. This is less out of a zeal for grammatical correctness than out of a desire for simplicity; I don't want to have to do research before I can figure out which pronoun to use :P

The album versions of those Iron & Wine songs are much better - particularly "The Devil Never Sleeps". It's an upbeat piano bar tune, or... something. The acoustic version is interesting just to see how he remakes it all by his lonesome with no overdubs, but in any event, it's a bit of an oddity in the generally down-tempo I&W canon.

That said, if you're not really into the songwriting or his style of guitar playing or whatever, I'm not sure a few bells and whistles and some studio layering are gonna change that for you... it's just a case of that not being your genre, which is totally fine.

If you're on Windows then click on the file and press F2 (that would be the F2 button at the top of your keyboard, not the letters F and 2). If you're on the Mac then click on the file and press Enter (which on Windows will *launch* the file, behavior that has gotten many a would-be switcher in trouble).

The F2 key has saved my sanity. I used to try to rename files by clicking on them and then clicking again, which works, unless the two clicks are close enough together to register as a double click, which launches the file in its associated application, which on my old computer meant going through the laborious and resource-consuming rigamorole of launching WinAmp.

I find trying to rename using the mouse awkward and unintuitive. You're going to be putting your hands on the keyboard to rename it anyway; might as well do it a little earlier and save yourself the trouble of dealing with the mouse.

Good point; I hadn't thought of it that way.

Of course, the F2 key is awkward for me because I inevitably hit either F1 (which launches Help) or F3 (which launches a search pane) in the process and then have to use the mouse to get back to the window I was trying to type a filename in. But it's not anyone else's fault that I have big fingers.

hey, i'm new to the phorum

i'm uploading the title track from Jeff Buckley's album.  perhaps not as rare/unknown as the songs you guys posted, but i'd like to get to know more obscure music than the stuff that gets played on radio today.
anyway, "Grace" is an amazing song that I didn't like at first, but now i do.  the vocals, especially at the climax, are delicious.

murlough, i read your review of The Listening's debut.  I'm curious to hear what they sound like, especially Hosea in C minor.

thanks.

Lucky for you I happen to still have this song kicking about on my hard drive from back when I was running the Pub; I'm uploading it as I write this (which probably means it will finish sometime tomorrow). It's a pretty good song.

The endless "grace" puns are always fun. I was actually tapped to work on a website for a project called GRACE, and I was supposed to talk with my supervisor about it, but I needed to step out and get a bite to eat, so I asked if we could discuss it after lunch. He remarked later that we should have discussed it before lunch because you're supposed to say grace before you eat. Groan.  rolleyes

Then I took a while to get lunch and eat it before reappearing to meet with him. I apologized for the delay but told him I assumed there was some sort of a grace period. Groan.  :ρ

This then led to a brief competition in pun jousting, in which I'm pretty sure the smartest remark was when I asked whether the project was under fire. GROAN.  Angry

OK, so even though my access from work is iffy, I'd like to start contributing to the Pub again. But there's no delete function (at least, not that I can see) and I don't want to overload it with clutter. if I upload two new songs, will you delete me two old ones? Can we set up some sort of a protocol for this?

Upload whatever you like.  Since I'm not sure how to allow the user to delete files at the moment, you can upload a blank text file named "del (user) Artist - Song" and I'll take it as an order to delete that particular file along with the text file.

Since I haven't been actively Pubbing for a while, I'm uploading 4 songs, plus a text file saying to delete my old ones. If I contribute more frequently, I'll stick to a 2-song maximum.
