Since bloop's been getting into Frank Zappa, I'm uploading Weird Al's "Genius in France", which is a style parody of Zappa. Dweezil Zappa plays the guitar solo at the beginning of the song. Not one of my favorites by Weird Al, but I'd be interested in finding out how well he mimicked Zappa's quirks and mannerisms.

I also enjoyed the new Mute Math and Animal Collective songs that were up there. I went ahead and downloaded the Fall Be Kind EP, just to hear the Collective in a more challenging context than on MPP.
Glad you liked them! I actually think Fall Be Kind is easier to get into and more consistent than MPP. Personally, I wish they took all the songs off of Fall Be Kind except for "Bleeding" and replaced "Also Frightened", "Guys Eyes", "Taste" and "In the Flowers" from MPP. Then MPP would be the classic, 5-star album it should have been.

I'd keep "Also Frightened" and "In the Flowers". Nothing wrong with a 13-song album, though it probably would have taken a little longer to digest at first.

It already is as far as I'm concerned, but I don't know that if something isn't a 5 star album, that merely replacing a few songs with better songs is enough to do it. There's something to be said for sequencing and transition.

I was thinking about that when listening to FBK this morning. I like most of these songs, but they could have mucked up the pacing on MPP, since most of them are longer and take a good amount of time to "get going". MPP has a few longer, more drawn-out songs (most notably "Daily Routine"), but for the most part it keeps moving along at a pretty good pace and the track order is nearly flawless. The songs on FBK were likely left off of MPP not because the group considered them inferior, but because they clearly belonged to a separate body of work. We could otherwise have a situation where we'd think all the songs on MPP were good, but that the album didn't flow well or seem unified.

Oh, I agree, which is why I'd replace them. "Guys Eyes" and "Taste" horribly break the flow of the album, merely providing us with 8 meandering minutes of experimental music that goes nowhere. They're pretty much the "Revolution 9" of MPP, except not as bad. "In the Flowers" is a pretty boring way to start the album. Again, another song that doesn't go anywhere and doesn't have anything musically interesting to keep the audience's attention. I just see it as a long, drawn-out intro for "My Girls". "Graze" has pretty much the same structure, but is much more interesting. I think there's a way to insert the songs from Fall Be Kind and make the sequencing and transitions work. Put "Graze" and "What Would I Want? Sky" before "My Girls". Sky could easily transition into My Girls given the right reworking at the end of the song. We'll keep "Also Frightened" because it doesn't ruin the flow of the album, I'm just personally not a big fan of it. Put "On A Highway" after "Bluish", and "I Think I Can" after "Brother Sport" (after a slight reworking of "Brother Sport"'s ending). 12 songs, just over an hour, no flow-breaking songs. Or I could be completely crazy because I'm posting at 2:30 AM. NP: "But Not For Me" -John Coltrane (Yes, I realize the irony of complaining about songs that meander while listening to free jazz. Improv is interesting to me, though.)

I found "In the Flowers" to be disorienting and off-putting at first, and there are still days when I think it gets a bit screechy, but on other days, I feel like it's really exhilirating and freeing when the drums kick in.
Either way, I wouldn't want two full, long songs to come before "My Girls". It really needs to come early in the starting lineup.
"Guys Eyes" would actually be fine with me if it didn't repeat two words for a full minute and a half. I like the verses and the way that the two guys are singing completely different lyrics over each other.
"Taste" just kind of drones on. It's not terrible, but coming after "Guys Eyes", it definitely makes the album lag a bit. That's the song I find myself tempted to skip in my anticipation for "Lion in a Coma".
(Fun fact: "I Think I Can" and "Lion in a Coma" are both in 9/8 time. I think.)

Uploaded three new tracks today.
Barenaked Ladies - "Four Seconds" While most of their new stuff post-Steve Page's departure is a little more melancholy and/or easygoing, this one is an interesting twist on the faux-rap goofiness of some of their big hits.
Lost Ocean - "Lately I Can't Fly" A beautiful slice of glistening piano pop. I'm not sure what's up with the silly lyrics about a kid's dream, but I can roll with it.
The Clumsy Lovers - "Rest" A friend gave me an album by this Vancouver-based bluegrass/Celtic band for my birthday. While this track doesn't tear it up as much as some of their jigs/hoedowns do, it's my favorite on the album.

*edit* trying a different method for this one. Open the text file and follow the link (I know it's good since I did it myself). It should help my computer to not become overburdened.

Just uploaded a new batch of songs. This time I'm putting a track from my top 3 favorite CDs released this year so far.
Fair: "One Last Time" As much as I like Aaron Sprinkle's solo material, I think he sounds even better when backed by a full band. This is my favorite track from his Disappearing World CD.
The Classic Crime: "The Happy Nihilist" The Classic Crime takes a page out of House of Heroes' book here in terms of sound.
The Rocket Summer: "Let You Go" If nothing else, Bryce Avary has been good at writing catchy tunes, and this is the one that stands out the most to me on his latest album.
P.S. bloop, you can take down the other 3 songs I had prevouisly Pubbed.

The Janelle Monae album is wonderfully diverse. I thought for sure Badu would have the album of the year in that category, but I'm not so sure now (easy categorization eludes Monae anyway).

I think their albums are both banging but definitely different categories. Badu tends to play pretty freely in her Neo-Soul, Africana, Hip-Hop, Jazz, groove whereas Monae's music makes me think of Musical Theatre, Indie Pop, Funk, and Space Rock in addition to her Soul-Hip-Hop-Jazz sensibilities. I don't think I could (genre wise) make Monae and Badu compete for a crown mostly because they seem to be trying to do different things musically even though they occasionally touch on the same influences.

I put up the song "Computer Love" by Kraftwerk. I was listening to it today and noticed that it sounds very similar to "Talk" by Coldplay. Apparently, this was quite intentional on Coldplay's part, according to Wikipedia, but it was still news to me.

I remembered hearing that they had either sampled or intentionally quoted a song for that one; I had just forgotten whose song it was. Hopefully they gave credit.

These guys have gone from "I thought they were kind of boring" at the release date of their last album, to "I know it's a must buy before I even hear it" at the release of this one. (The last album wasn't boring, but I had mistakenly placed them as a dull band before that, and I don't know what the hell was wrong with me.)

That would work if Funeral was at all dull, so what's your excuse? The vocals irritated me at first, like, a LOT (and some of Win Butler's most abrasive performances are right at the front of the album). Still, this is not the same thing as "dull", so I don't know why I remembered them as being one of those slow, brooding bands. Funeral only has a few tracks that aren't upbeat. I love Funeral now - possibly even more than Neon Bible.

I figured it's time for me to put up a new batch of songs. Here are my latest offerings:
Andrew Peterson: "The Reckoning (How Long)" The fast-paced folk-pop tune closes Andrew Peterson's latest album, and it also happens to be the first single.
Jars of Clay: "Out of My Hands" This pop-rocker is the first single from Jars of Clay's upcoming album. Latest rumors are that the album is releasing in October.
The Mynabirds: "Numbers Don't Lie" Mix a little bit of piano pop with some R&B and a tinge of gospel and you pretty much get the idea here. These guys (and girls) certainly made me take notice when I saw them open for Josh Ritter last month.
P.S. bloop, you can take down my songs from Fair, Seabird, The Classic Crime and The Rocket Summer.

I put up the David Moreno album of Spanish guitar music my mom asked me to rip from vinyl. It's my first ever attempt, but if anyone wants to give me some constructive criticism, go ahead.
Note: The record wasn't in the best of shape, and I didn't do any click repair (I thought I'd keep it simple for my first try), and I'm pretty sure the record is in mono, so don't ask why I recorded in stereo.
