I remember hearing about this years ago in connection with Bible prophecy. I'm not clear yet on whether this hit was in the specific area where the Old Testament was supposed to have placed it. And due to the news source I cannot be sure yet how true this story is.

Looks like
a) this is natural gas, not oil,
b) it's less in Israel and more in the Mediterranean sea and
c) it actually is really close (within 100 miles) of the approximate location the Biblical text is purported to indicate

That said, the "oil in Israel" thing seems to be a gross misapplication of the Biblical text. It wouldn't be surprising if oil were discovered under Israel--that whole region seems to be lousy with the stuff--but I'm very skeptical of the Biblical prophecy issue.

(For those curious about how I arrived at point C, I went to Google News, searched for "israel gas" and took the most likely-looking hit. It said the gas was found under the Mediterranean 60 miles off the coast of Haifa. I then looked up Haifa on Wikipedia, compared its location to that of the map of the land given to the tribe of Asher on WND, and estimated the approximate distance. Unlike WND, I do like to cite my sources.)

If you don’t have freedom as a principle, you can never see a reason not to make an exception. There are constantly going to be times when for one reason or another there’s some practical convenience in making an exception.

Israel Schmisrael.

by which I mean to say that we as American Christians devote far too much time and energy attempting to figure out the future based on biblical prophecy, which seems to be the opposite of the actual point of biblical prophecy.
