I read some descriptions about that book online. I'd like to read it, but our library doesn't have it and I'm not sure I want to read it enough to buy it. Did you find it to be worthwhile?

i think it was well worth the read.  i got it really cheap so i wouldn't have been out a lot anyways, but it was a good read and gave plenty to chew on for someone in ministry like me.

re-read Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card
My experience with Card's Ender books was as follows:
Ender's Game: Blew my mind, loved it
Speaker for the Dead: Loved the first half or so, but it kind of petered out (no pun intended)
Xenocide: Couldn't really even get into it

I kind of want to give the series a go again to see if my opinions will have changed since I first read the books about ten years ago, but I already have an imposing stack of books I need to finish first before I take on any more.

The later Ender books are VERY different from Ender's Game, so that makes sense. When I first read them (also about 10 years ago) I liked the later books significantly less than the first, but in retrospect I might like them as much or more (definitely completely different approaches though).

I saw an interview with him before the Super Bowl along with one of those featurettes about his career, and it seems like he's the real deal. It sounds like the Saints really did take a chance on him, and boy did it pan out.

I just finished The Hound of the Baskervilles, starring Sherlock Holmes, and then found out that there is a book which argues that Sherlock Holmes was wrong in his conclusions and drove an innocent man to his death, and that Conan Doyle was in that novel expressing his hatred of Sherlock Holmes.

So is the book claiming that Doyle intentionally hid a gaffe by Holmes because of his dislike of the character, or that Doyle himself was unintentionally (subconsciously?) wrong?

Hound was written in 1902, so it's entirely possible that by this point Doyle had already begun his hatred and resentment of Holmes and his popularity. However, few of his writings suggest, at least to me, that Sir Arthur possessed the necessary subtlety and restraint to place an extended middle finger in one of his works and to hide it so brilliantly that it would go largely unnoticed for over a hundred years. The only support I can see for this thesis is in deconstructionism, that Doyle himself subconsciously included these errors in deduction without intending the outcome to be at all ambiguous.

Since I have little use for literary deconstructionists, I will ignore this hypothesis with unrestrained force.
