I'm sorry, I've been busy all weekend and forgot to give suggestions.  I am interested to see 2 different takes on the Kindo album.

A lack of links to sound clips might help explain that.

It looks like I'm going first.

Album Reviewed: Gabe Dixon Band: self-titled

Pros: On the whole, this is a well-written piano-pop album, with a few hints of jazz influence helping to spice things up along the way.  This album does get quite catchy in a few spots, with "Till You're Gone" and "Far From Home" standing out among the up-tempo songs, and "Five More Hours" highlighting the ballads.  Lyrics are above-average, and overall the album is a very pleasant listen.

Cons: Much of this album falls into the "good, but doesn't stand out that much" category.  The album is a bit under-produced, which might be contributing to that.

The Bottom Line: This is a pretty good effort from the Gabe Dixon Band, and they could have a great album in them if they can come up with a few more standout tracks.

Rating: I'm giving it a "B", but I could see myself bumping it up to a "B+" as the album could grow on me a little more.  Either way, that's 4 stars.  You guys had me dead-on this week.

On Deck For Next Week: Assuming next week is a regular week, I'll do Molly Jenson's Maybe Tomorrow.  Her entire album is streaming on Virb.com: http://virb.com/mollyjenson/audio/albums/23423

Welcome to the Welcome Wagon might be better titled Vito's Ordinary Songs. Remember "Vito's Ordination Song" from the end of Sufjan Stevens' Michigan album? Well, this is the titular pastor and his wife, and the guy sounds pretty much exactly like Sufjan Stevens (specifically the Seven Swans album), just with less charm. See, there's only so far that one can push the homey, "Completely open Christian folk songs to comfort you" gimmick. Stevens made it work on Seven Swans because of the unique instrumentation and the songs that related personal experiences as well as his frank takes on his religious beliefs. But imagine if nearly every song on Seven Swans was like "The Transfiguration". It's too much Sunday School devotional stuff, and not enough personality. And while I realize Stevens was at the production helm and contributed his instrumental skills and so forth, The Welcome Wagon really should have made more of an effort to develop their own sound. I figured at this point I'd take a new Sufjan Stevens album by proxy because it was better than hearing nothing from him at all. But now I wish he'd stop being the J. J. Abrams of the indie music world (i.e. starting awesome projects, but working on so many things at once that he doesn't have the time to finish 'em) and just cut another album already. 3 stars.

I'm still undecided for the next round. I would like do review The Reign of Kindo's album, actually, but I can't seem to find it on Soulseek.

Murlough pretty much said it all in that the Welcome Wagon album sounds like Sufjan-lite.  Similarly arranged, with that trademark community feel to it, but even the community doesn't sound like it's entirely bought-in, and this sort of thing absolutely demands that in those rare instances that is is going for something a little more widescreen and in technicolor.

On the other hand, I like some of what Sufjan brought to the table, and it had its moments just for that.  I particularly appreciated the Velvet Underground cover, but it's usually a pretty bad thing when a cover is my favorite song on an album.  3 stars.

The Reign of Kindo album wasn't what I was expecting, and I didn't like it as much as I'd hoped I would-- a big part of my problem was the singer's voice, which reminded me too much of a billion other, slightly angsty indies-- but there are certainly some impressive musical chops on display, enough that I'll happily give it a 4.

TROK was great, but my mind wasn't blown. Aside from some unique musical elements, I also noticed the vocals were really, really similar to a ton of others and there were some songs that meandered too much for my liking. Track for track, I liked Cool Hand Luke's latest album more. I give them 4 stars.

Next round: The Gourds - Haymaker

For the next round, I'd like to do The Decemberists - Hazards of Love... though I don't think there are any audio samples to be found, save for two full-length MP3s. Is that good enough for everyone?
