http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1131465Backwards-compatible with lossy MP3. Might be what's needed to tip Amazon, et. al. over to a saner format.

I'm confused. If you're keeping all the data and the mp3 files are, by definition, "lossless", then how does this save you any disk space? I thought the point of mp3 was to save disk space, rather than having all of these clunky WAV or AIFF or FLAC files hogging real estate on your hard drive.

lossy mp3 format isn't what's broken, really. The problem has always been encoding too low, but another lossless format is more than welcome.

I guess I've never been enough of a hardcore audiophile to care. 192 is good enough for me. I'm even happy with 128, but since getting a bigger hard drive, 192 is my standard. I can't tell the difference between that and the CD... probably because I'm too cheap to buy really awesome speakers.

192 is about where it's transparent to me, so V0 is my ripping setting of choice because it's just a little higher. 128 sounds noticeably washed-out. I don't consider myself an audiophile (I would think nothing less than lossless would do for audiophilic types).

I would just as soon assume the true audiophilic types have it all on vinyl anyway.

It depends on the music; there are some songs where 192 can provide a very acceptable rendition, while others require 256 or greater. For me, part of it is the principle of the thing--if I'm going to help you out by letting you give me my purchases in digital format (which increases your profit margins substantially), I expect you to at least give me the best possible digital representation of those purchases.
I'm with bloop on this one; another lossless format certainly won't hurt, especially one that (unlike FLAC, wavpack, et. al.) is backwards-compatible with lossy MP3.

Pfft. Vinyl is so yesteryear. Master tapes are the way to go. I think vinyl jokes are to be our new running gag. Deal?

I think vinyl jokes are to be our new running gag. Deal? Absolutely! We're going to drill it into everyone's heads that everyone who owns a vinyl record is either (a) an old fogie, (b) an anal retentive indie snob, or (c) someone who was rummaging through a yard sale and thought it was a good idea at the time. Weird. I couldn't see that at first due to the use of https in the URL. (Had to tell Firefox yeah yeah, I don't care about the security certificate, yada yada yada.) So I thought you had posted a blank response, and I was thinking, "Hmmm, it's just like mp3 compression, we got his response with all the stuff taken out of it that no one hears anyway."

I honestly do own everything I care about on vinyl. But I generally have mp3s too for convenience, so this is cool I guess.

I would honestly be surprised by this, not because I doubt your preference for vinyl, but because I doubt that everything you care about would even have a vinyl release. Absolutely! Even though I'm not a vinyl head, as a person who still has a bunch of cassettes lying around that my wife has snapped up in her relentless pursuit to offload everything she can find on Ebay, I must say that I'm impressed that vinyl has already outlasted two newer formats: the 8-track and the cassette.

There's a couple local things I can't get on vinyl but that's really about it.

I would think there would be other issues to contend with as well:
Vinyl pressings tend to be limited.
I was born in 1977. A lot of the best albums of all time predate me considerably, and are not easy to get on vinyl either due to expense or rarity, but perhaps you're rich. Rarity may still be an issue even for the wealthy.
2nd issue would apply to any format. There's just too much music I care about from the dawn of civilization forward to possibly afford all of it. This leaves only a couple possibilities for solution: fabulous wealth, or a more limited swath of music that one cares about.
