Has anyone else checked out the NBC show Kings? It's a sort of modern retelling of the story of King David, taking place in an alternate history where people have modern technology and society looks like our own more or less, but the action takes place in the "Kingdom of Gilboa" under the sovereign rule rule of King Silas (played in awesomely intimidating fashion by Ian McShane of Deadwood fame). It's a good show. I think it's well-acted even if it does have its occasional forced line readings or heavy-handed symbolism. In general, I'm sucker for modern reinterpretations of old stories. Since there's only so much to go on from the Bible, they've obviously had to add details, so it more or less works as a "political intrigue" sort of show.

Of course, if you haven't been watching it, now's probably not a good time to get invested. NBC has moved the show to the Saturday death slot due to abysmal ratings. The fact that they've alluded to the King's son (the analogue of Jonathan) being gay probably helped to squelch any goodwill that they otherwise might have gotten from most of the Christian audience. Otherwise those folks would have probably pimped it like the next Fireproof. An overall lack of promotion and an odd timeslot (Sundays at 8? Really? Old Testament Bible stories aren't really family-friendly material if you want to tell them truthfully, and that's when families are watching nice people demolish houses for charitable purposes over on ABC) haven't helped. And I doubt the addition of Macauley Culkin to the cast is gonna help ratings much.

Despite all that, I've really enjoyed the show so far and will probably continue to for the rest of its disappointingly short run. Just wondered if anyone else here even knew about it.

I had read a little bit about it from people looking for shows to watch now that BSG is done. (I went with Dollhouse.) I might check it out.

The entire show so far is on Hulu, I believe.

So far, I'm really enjoying this. They should make more shows based on Bible stories. Wait, those are usually bad.

Great! I hope you enjoy the rest of it... when it finally airs... over the summer... on SATURDAYS.

Yeah, stick a fork in this show, it's done.  Angry

Yeah, I heard about that. Pretty annoying news. I mind the wait more than the premature death, though. I don't know how interested I'd be in watching the show once Silas and Samuels are dead and gone, and David is king. He's probably the most uninteresting character on the show to me.

Yeah, I have to wonder what the long-term plan would have been there. Given that we already know the basic story, it might have been more effective to tell it from the point of view of David's reign, periodically flashing back to the time frame we actually saw on the show to tell us how he became king. (Maybe Lost just has me too hooked on non-linear storytelling.)

Well, it's sadly official. Apparently the death of a producer had something to do with the show's. R.I.P.
