Simple question, how many of you are photographers?  If so, what area do you specialize in, if any?  I am into outdoor/nature photography.  I like to hike and go to remote places to take my pictures.  My role model as a photographer is Galen Rowell(http://www.mountainlight.com/).  So, lets hear about it!

I would like to consider myself a photographer, though I don't really speciallize in any area. I took my high school photography course my freshman year. I really think that I am obsessed with cinematography though. Take photography and add the dynamic of time, it's challenging and fun.

I'd like to think that I have a good eye for what looks good; I often see something and think about photographing it, what angle I would take it from, etc. Unfortunately, I've never really found the time to start taking very many pictures. But it's something I hope to pursue someday.

I bet it is fun.  I never gave a thought to cinematography until I saw the first LOTR movie.  It blew me away.  Then I got the DVD and found out that a lot of stuff was done with computers.  I was slightly let down, but I still think it is good work.  Photography is great because you are trying to get as much meaning into a single frame as possible.  That appeals to me.  And, lets face it, a film you took on a hike probably wouldn't be as interesting as some slide that you took.  Stills are just better for pure visual record, IMHO.

Agreed. But cinematography doesn't have to involve computers. Just look at the old school movies like Citezen Kane or any Hitchcock film.

Citizen Kane was an awesome movie, and the cinematography was first-rate. And if you think cinema is all computers nowadays, you obviously haven't seen a photo processing/retouching lab lately :P

I suck at photography, by the way, but I had to reply about the computers ^_^

Hey, I don't want to be misunderstood.  I just was a little let down when I found out that a lot of the amazing lighting and color properties that we see in the LOTR films were computer enhanced. I still think it was good work.  I know the photography certainly has a digital element, but there are those oppose digital editing of pictures(without disclosure that they are edited) except for correcting film scratches and flaws and the like.

I am by no means a photographer (I'm famous for putting my finger in front of the lense) but with some of the pictures I do take on occasion I enjoy finding truths through them and writing about them.

I also enjoyed a Geometry project we had last year in which we had to take pictures of different geometric shapes in nature. I got second place in my class, by the way!

I love taking pictures and I guess, it's somewhat in my blood since my parents both worked in photography while they served in the Navy. I'm probably going to minor in it when I get to college. my favorite type of photography...well, I love taking concert photos. but mostly, I just take my camera around and take pictures of anything, really. I would link my site, but it's not all up yet.

I'm not a terribly good photographer, but I enjoy it just the same.  If you want to see some pictures I took (mostly of my family's hike up Mount Robson on the Canada Day long weekend), go to: http://members.shaw.ca/polka_dot  Anything that I'm not in was taken by me.  We've only got an automatic camera...I've never even used anything else before.   [_[

Ahh, Hitchcock. One of my favorite movies is The Rope. It is filmed in real time.

anyhow, by no means am I a professional, but I enjoy taking pictures and also doing some nice editing in Photoshop. Right now I am working on making some of my pictures into destop backgrounds for a website I'm working on. I currently have 1208 digital photos on my computer. (I took most of them)

I agree with Josh. (that just sounds scarry) Schill those are some good photos. I think you do a real good job capturing the light. (I have a fairly cheap digital camera. I am thinking about buying a Nikon Coolpix 3100 or 4100.)

I must admit, that geometry photo project was a lot of fun. To this day, I still find myself seeing some odd shape in nature and mumbling, "Oh, nice hexagon," or something to that effect!  =D

I like taking pictures, but in more of a technical sort of way, rather than an artsy sort.

Uh...here's some from last night: http://www.pbase.com/kram/4th

kram, those are some very cool pictures, with the fireworks and the cardinal.  Did you use any special techniques to get the firework pictures?  Putting the shuter on "B", opening up to maximum aperture, then holding a card in front of the shutter, triggering the shutter with a cable release, and then waiting for a firework, pulling the card away from the shutter for an instant, then putting it back?  Thats what I always that was the procedure, but I have never been sure.  I didn't try yesterday because I was out of film.  Please let us in on your secret, please =D .

Nope... I would even scan my geometry pics in and post them if I still had them, but my teacher is paranoid (perhaps for good reason) that if she let students keep their pictures they'd just give the photos to people who had to do the project next year. Phooey.

Wow, that cardinal is really great. When I was younger I tried some bird photography, but I had no zoom on my old 35mm camera and I was definitely no good at sneaking up on them...as Mark can tell you (it's still something of a joke in our house), my pictures were all horrible  unsure

Thanks...Shocked

Fireworks...I set the shutter to 2 seconds in some, 1 second in others...aperture was F8. I sort of braced against the car door mirror... (I don't have a tripod) Camera does have image stabilization, which had to have helped my shakiness...

...my "secret" was taking LOTS of pics, only a few of them turned out, =/

Are you using digital? I would assume you are, if they were on the web the next day.   Vlad, thats funny about the birds.  I just purchased a 28mm wide angle and a 100-200 zoom for my Canon AE1, so I can have more options when taking pictures.  The first thing I want to try will be birds.  We'll see what happens.

Digital seems to be the wave of the future, but I can't afford a digital camera that will give me the kind of pictures I can get from my manual SLR and Fujichrome.  The idea of having your pictures quickly sounds very appealing to me, though.  Perhaps one day...... Smiley   But in the mean time, I need to find a place that does transparency scans for cheap, then I can show you all what I have been working on.

DvCHWi has a good point. There are many things that some people who prefer digital don't think about. (I think about them because I do use digital and it's an HP. HP may make good printers, but this camera is far from being what I want. I am considering getting a Nikon Coolpix because it is supposed to have good color (it handles whites nicely too) and MacAddict said it was "the best point and shoot digicam we've ever seen." (I am not quite sure what they mean by point and shoot because it does have a good deal of different settings, at least for me) Until then I am going to see if I can't borrow an SLR for some of my landscape pictures. (I get white spots with my digital))

ps does anyone have a problem with my sub-parenthesis?
