Johnny Depp: I saw this knowing that I can't stand Depp and I still can't, but it worked because he was playing a reprehensible murderer. I was really glad when he got blown away.
Pffft.

Johnny Depp is a great actor; he just does a lot of mainstream fare these days. The roles aren't as meaty as some of his earlier work.
Two Lovers was great. I haven't seen a better performance by Joaquin Phoenix. Gwyneth Paltrow, Vinessa Shaw and Isabella Rossellini was also very good. Rosselini and Elias Koteas work a lot into very limited screen time.

He gets better billing nowadays, but I think the roles he chooses are still fairly eccentric. It's not like he's playing the charming cad who finally meets his match in a special girl who makes him forego his usual womanizing, lone-wolf ways in endless romantic comedies or anything.

He is perhaps the finest working actor in America right now-- or at least the finest popular/famous one. Best in the world, though, is still Daniel Day-Lewis!

Yeah, it's pretty hard to argue with that. There are a lot of actors, American and otherwise, that I absolutely love, so it would be hard to say which is best on the planet. I can't imagine Depp in many of DDL's roles, that's for sure, but the same is true in reverse.

Depp and Matt Damon are my top 2 (interchangeable) as far as American actors go.

I don't understand the love here. I mean, Depp has always struck me as a campy-ass, pompous, "OMG I'm so eccentric and therefore I am a brilliant actor" douchebag in every single one of his roles. In fact, I think Public Enemies is the first Depp movie I've ever actually enjoyed, and I think that is due to two factors:
1) Dillinger, or Depp, dies 2) I knew from the start he was going to die.
I seriously can't stand the guy at all.

Have you seen everyone of his movies? I ask you go back and watch some of his earlier stuff (What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Donnie Brasco, Benny & Joon, Fear and Lothing in Las Vegas, and Blow) - those are quality roles for him. I don't understand your hatred and wholesale disposal of his career. It strikes me as sad that you come across as only liking this movie because Depp's character is killed. I

I'll use it. To watch Johnny Depp die in another movie, I recommend "Sweeney Todd".

Depp also dies in The Libertine. I don't think the movie's great, but his performance certainly is. The music by Michael Nyman is also great.

IDK, once he starts slitting throats and handing their meat over to be served, you know this cannot end well for him.

If I remember, he takes enough abuse to die several times in that movie.
