On an only vaguely related note, am I the only one who feels strange about eating concessions during really sad movies? It just seems wrong to be eating Twizzlers and slurping Cherry Coke while watching a movie about the Holocaust, for example.

Agreed. I don't purchase concessions, so I don't really have a chance to evaluate this emotion.

I'm used to having to gulp down whatever large drink I bought outside of the movie theater in a hurry under the stern watch of the guy who takes tickets and won't let in any outside food and why should I pay twice what I'd pay outside for less liquid?
Which might explain my bladder problems once inside the theater.

We (my husband and I) don't generally buy concessions at the theatre, except occasionally at the campus theatre, where it's really cheap ($2.00 for a large soda and popcorn, with 2 free refills of each, not that we could ever eat enough to avail ourselves of the refills). But my parents always do, so I usually get a drink when I'm with them, and when they watch movies at home, they generally have some kind of snacks (popcorn, soda, whathaveyou) as well.

Yeah, when watching movies at home I will eat snacks (or dinner, or whatever) while watching. But if someone needs to go to the bathroom we can just pause it.

The only thing I'll buy at the theater is popcorn. We smuggle everything else in.

So assuming you occasionally watch movies about human suffering at home, does it make you feel weird to eat during them?

A while back the family group I'm in at church watched The End of the Spear, which involves human suffering at one point, and I think we were all chomping away. It doesn't really feel all that weird to me.

I feel for that guy. I spent the last hour and a half of The Fellowship of the Ring trying not to think about my painfully full bladder. I just knew that if I left the theater for a few minutes, I'd miss something important/awesome and regret it.

That's why there is runpee.com. It won't help for those older movies you're seeing in the theater as a special, but for new ones, it could.

I've found that I don't always (or even often) agree with their assessment of what does or does not constitute an important scene. That said, some scenes are certainly more miss-able than others and it's good to be aware of that.

I watched The Soloist at a super-posh 'Gold Class' theater. The staff there serves you dinner and drinks in your reclining leather seat. So, yeah, it felt pretty strange to chomp down on my duck tacos amid scenes of extreme poverty and suffering. What a weird, extravagant cinematic experience.

Same here. I almost never purchase concessions at the movies, unless it a big, fun "event" kind of movie.
