Consider me one of the people that never got into her music. Hopefully, this time off was good for her. I wouldn't be surprised if she had burned out from the industry grind and needed a break.

I wouldn't be surprised if she had burned out from the industry grind and needed a break. I think that was probably it. Not long before her retirement, I heard the nasty rumor that she was a lesbian. I didn't believe it for a second, but I thought it was just like the CCM industry to actually believe and perpetutate something like that - we love to cannibalize our own even when there's no foundation for it. While that may have been nothing to do with it, I know some personalities just aren't built for the constant scrutiny and half-baked assumptions about a musician's personal life, so there comes a point where they just need to get out of the spotlight. On the other hand, sometimes musicians just get interested in other things for a while. So who knows. I'm just glad she's back and I hope the industry treats her a little better this time. Ooh, just read that her comeback show is at one of my favorite local venues. I've seen Vienna Teng roughly 4 times at the Hotel Cafe; it's a tiny little place, so i guess I better get tickets soon!

So? (seriously, though, don't get me wrong - it's a very welcome return, but the year has been busy. No one here seems to be reacting in quite the over-the-top way I've seen elsewhere anyway.)

I think Jennifer Knapp struck a chord with her audience back in the day because she struck a good balance between artistry and authenticity. Her music, for the most part, was your basic folk/rock stuff with only the occasional curveball, so it's not like she reinvented a genre or anything. But I think she was able to approach concepts that might be considered basic in Christian music without it feeling didactic, like she was just trying to teach you a lesson. It was more like, "Hey, here's what I'm still learning and struggling with as a new believer." She more or less won me over as a kindred spirit in that way. I figure whatever I'm gonna get from her, it's gonna be a true reflection of where she's at, and that's refreshing - anyone could do that easily, but the majority of Christian musicians would rather just make sure you get the point, and leave their own weaknesses out of it.

Wow. Knapp opens up a LOT to Christianity Today. (And Murlough - those rumors weren't just nasty rumors) Jennifer comes across as someone who is passionate about music and being honest with her art. I really enjoyed reading the interview, and at the same time, I felt like I was getting a peek inside someone who will never be completely comfortable in her own skin. Jennifer Knapp Come Out

Wow. Knapp opens up a LOT to Christianity Today. (And Murlough - those rumors weren't just nasty rumors) ZOMG. I'm really surprised, because I was swearing up and down that there was no evidence to support it. I think the real issue back then was that it was private and she was being attacked based on hearsay. That said, I couldn't wrap my head around that concept of one of my favorite Christian singers being gay at the time. Now, it doesn't faze me. I'm really intrigued for this concert now. The wife might have some misgivings about going if I told her about Knapp's coming out... so maybe I won't tell her. And it's not like I think her music is going to be any less real and intimate than it always has been... I don't think she's gonna pull an Adam Lambert and be kissing girls on stage or anything. Still, it could be interesting if there are Christians in the audience who choose to get unruly. I've been trying to get into the heads of Christians who are gay and trying to struggle through that honestly and still be part of a church or some other type of Christian community. I just want to know what their experiences are like and how we can make that environment less hostile for them while also seeking nothing less than the honest truth in our discussions of the issue. Having a favorite musician come out will likely help my understanding here. Unfortunately, it also means a lot of my friends are going to badmouth her. (I'm really glad I don't post at CMC any more.) Yeah, that's roughly it, but it's incomplete without the Portuguese outro.

You've got to love people who are so convinced they're right that they're not even willing to engage in a discussion. If your position was really that solid, you wouldn't have to fear someone else's logic undermining it, now would you?

It's been absorbed into ccmmagazine.com, which is weird, because the print magazine is also defunct. I don't know if they have forums. If they do, I bet there are some hangers-on making people's lives hell. If they don't, I'd say that's a perfectly reasonable way to keep costs low.

They do have forums and they're massive. I didn't read any of it, though. As screwed up as CMCentral was, when I started visiting those forums in 2003 or so I was into Pillar, P.O.D., and all of the nu-metal stuff. By the time I stopped going there in 2006 or 2007 I was into Mute Math, The Beatles, and Radiohead. Most of that is probably due to many of you who post here now, but in some way maybe I do owe a bit of gratitude to the CMCentral forums. I would hope I wouldn't still be listening to nothing but nu-metal, but who knows!?!?! So, there's your Eulogy from me, CMCentral. R.I.P.

There were a few CMCers who followed us over to The Phorum, and the results of that have been mostly positive. And I can tell similar stories about CMCers who influenced my musical tastes in positive ways. So I can't say every experience I had there was bad. Unfortunately, trying to get other folks to expand their horizons, at least in terms of accepting the idea of a certain approach to music being legitimate even if they personally couldn't get into it - was like beating my head against a wall. I was fighting against an industry designed to keep folks pretty narrow-minded so that they'd keep buying reiterations of the same product. Also, the atmosphere just got so draconian after a while that I'm glad I got out when I did - I think it was a result of both my tastes changing beyond the point where most of what excited folks there (or the Christian music sphere in general) didn't do it for me, and also rules and moderating duties changing to the point where I didn't agree with the way things were being run. The system was designed to let those ignorant of the rules run rampant while longtime members got slapped on the hand for increasingly silly infractions (or for attempting to reign in the noobs). It was toxic and frustrating. I'm glad I got out when I did. But yeah, looking at a lot of the new artists I discovered between 2002-2004 when I was heavily active there, I'd say CMC did make a worthwhile imprint on my collection. Maybe a few regrettable purchases, but as a whole, I ended better than I started. Sorry to sidetrack the conversation and turn it into another diatribe against CMC, but bottom line, I'm glad those folks aren't around in any organized, singular fashion to bash Jennifer Knapp.

That's the main reason I ended up leaving, as well. I'm a little tempted to the ccmmagazine forums and check out the Jennifer Knapp topic that surely exists. Must. Resist.
