It's never to early to start.

The National is the big one for me. Also pretty excited about Menomena, Arcade Fire, and Spooon. Joanna Newsom is rumored to be working on a double album. Even if not, I would be surprised if she didn't have something out next year. The Mars Volta have an album at the ready. Animal Collective's visual album should be out next year. Jaga Jazzist and Stars should be good too. I'd expect some Kanye, and maybe some Sufjan of some sort.
Also whatever Radiohead ends up putting out.

"Matt and Aaron are anal about their songs. So far only some of the bass parts are done My mail hold up right now are the vocal parts, other then that on some songs we have all 4-5 guitar parts down. Also there was a quote in pitchfork about the album being mixed next month. Like hell. If that album comes out by a tear from now I will be amazed" From another forum I frequent, posted recently.

Who made that quote? They've stated that it should be done around early-mid next year (don't remember the source, but it was fairly recent).

Hmm. Not sure what kind of forum that is, but I have trouble believing that a member of the band would get on there and say something like that...

All of them? Even the original keyboardist and bass player? (Josh Moore is so integral these days that it's hard to imagine the band without him... but he was practically in diapers when CC cut their first album.)

i'm cool with that, but what does that do with Josh Moore and the bass player whose name i can't remember (i guess we could refer to him as TBP or The Bass Player, like on That Thing You Do)? Neither was an original member. the other interesting thing about that is that Josh is more keyboard oriented whereas Randy, the original keys guy, was organ and stuff like that oriented if i recall.

Yeah. It would be weird to tell Josh and Jeff, "Hey, do you guys mind sitting this album out?" (Then again, there's no rule saying Josh can't produce or something, or that you can't have more than one keyboardist or bass player contribute to an album.)
I guess that explains why Andy's not involved. Hope that was a mutual decision on everyone's part.
EDIT: What about Aaron Tate? he was always a bit of a "ghost" member since I don't think he toured with them after Webb joined, but he wrote a lot of their landmark songs back in the day. There was some sort of unexplained rift between him and the band circa Back Home, and he hasn't been involved since. I wonder if they've mended that bridge at all.

On the subject of "no one here probably cares except for me"... I just read that Troy Donockley left Iona. Happened a few months back, but the Iona mailing list I once subscribed to is now dead, so i guess nobody thought to send the news along. Troy has been an integral part of the band for most of its existence (he does most of the pipes and exotic instruments, plus BGVs and the lead vocal on "Wind Off the Lake"), so I feared for the band's future upon reading this. But they've got a new pipe player to fill in during live shows, and they've regrouped after a period of activity and are planning a new album for 2010, so I'm stoked even though I don't think it'll be quite the same without Troy. (They mentioned musical and "philosophical" differences... troy isn't a Christian, as far as I know, so that makes me wonder if the material the band's writing these days is more explicitly Christian and Troy wasn't really feeling it. On their last few albums, it was more open to interpretation... not that I mind either approach.)

Whenever anything is really good, and its widely acknowledged to be, backlash is predictable (and, as a rule, asinine).

Their album wasn't my favorite of the year, or even top ten, but it was one of the better debuts of the decade. MGMT was good (I hate to say it, but esp. the singles), but uneven. The point is, backlash happens, and it's usually not warranted. Think of your favorite albums of the decade. There's probably significant backlash against each of them that had any level of positive national exposure.

Agreed. MGMT's debut was very uneven, and VW's was incredibly consistent, track to track.

I was gonna say, there has to be "lash" in the first place before there can be backlash. I really hate it when people hate stuff just because of its relative level of popularity. I hate fake buzz as much as the next guy, and I sometimes get baffled at what ends up being popular... but if I hate music, it's because I actually hate the music. I don't base that on who else likes or hates it.

Too soon. U2? They originally had Songs of Ascent slated for this November and then decided they needed a few more months to get it right... so I'm thinking 2012.

Yeah, given the album we already got, I'm a little nervous about the quality and consistency of the remaining 68 songs.
