Yeah, given the album we already got, I'm a little nervous about the quality and consistency of the remaining 68 songs.

<sarcasm tag> you must not be listening to the same album i am... laugh Wink :ρ <sarcasm tag>

I agree that Hello Hurricane is a quality album, but even I have some reservations about the short time between releases.

Wanderer: Well played!

AJ: Nice try, but we've already used that one in sarcastic jest three times since the start of that whole debacle. Train already left the station, dude. But I appreciate the attempt.  Smiley

bloop: It should probably go in the HH thread, but I'm still trying to figure out what you've noticed about this album that I haven't, given that you usually set the bar a lot higher in terms of expecting something unconventional.

In general, regarding the 68 or so remaining songs, I think we're forgetting that it's very common practice for songwriters to churn out far more songs than are actually usable during the recording process. Some of it's just to keep the gears oiled, and is never meant to be recorded, even as a lost B-side. I seem to recall hearing of Switchfoot having a lot of leftovers from the Oh! Gravity sessions as well. 9 times out of 10, when an artist gives us a glimpse into what that leftover material sounded like, even if they take the time to touch it up after the fact, the result isn't as strong in quality as the A-sides were, and only invites negative comparisons. (See Sufjan Stevens' The Avalanche, which might just be the sequel to my favorite album of all time.)

I had watched a video on YouTube recently that involved Jon Foreman being interviewed as part of some annual writer's symposium at some college down in San Diego. (I'm searching for it now, but can't find it.) He was talking about Switchfoot and his then-ongoing series of solo EPs, and he basically explained that he's constantly writing songs and that not all of them are necessarily that great, he just needs to keep it going out of habit and pick out the good stuff. He's actually had a better-than-average ratio of good songs to bad ones, given how much of his songwriting ended up on released albums. But still, I have a hard time believing that there's enough leftover to make another solid Switchfoot album so soon when we've already had four albums' worth of material from the guy in the last 2 years. I would have reservations about this even if I thought HH was awesome.

I feel a little differently about U2, because it sounds like Songs of Ascent is going to be a consciously thought-out series of meditations around a central subject - likely a departure for U2, but not just a bunch of songs thrown together out of a huge batch they wrote that didn't make it onto NLOTH for whatever reason. Then again, NLOTH could have been better, so it's not like I'm expecting the new U2 to be awesome, either.

I'm looking forward to new albums in 2010 by Anberlin, Blindside, Mae (Evening EP), Living Sacrifice, Continuance, Dependency, Jimmy Eat World, Lydia, and It Prevails. Hopefully there will also be new releases from Sufjan Stevens, Radiohead, Spoken, and Arcade Fire.

Arcade Fire is definitely overdue for a follow-up. Sufjan is well past overdue... I don't count The BQE as a proper follow-up to Illinois, even if it is a good recording in its own right.

Did Sufjan release any Christmas recordings this year? I know he usually does, but google isn't giving me any indication that he did this time.

Barenaked Ladies' All in Good Time comes out March 30. I'm watching an interview with Ed Robertson and Tyler Stewart right now, about how the band is operating after Steven Page's departure.

The only problem being that these are Midwest-based solo artists whose touring radius will likely be limited. (Then again, Knapp did do that special show in L.A. last year. I'm not sure whether that will make her more or less likely to come back this year.)

May is going to be great.  National, Broken Social Scene and Band of Horses are all expected on the 4th.  I may be setting myself up, but I fully expect The National to be the best album of the year, considering Boxer was my third favorite of the last decade.

Emily Robison and Martie Maguire (otherwise known as the two non-loudmouths from the Dixie Chicks) are releasing an album under the name "Court Yard Hounds" on May 4. The Dixie Chicks reportedly aren't breaking up, but these two were ready to record new music and Natalie Maines wasn't, so they struck out on their own for an album. Innnnnnteresting.

Drive-By Truckers have a new album out called The Big To-Do, and a follow-up due later this year called Go Go Boots, which is apparently a collection of "R&B murder ballads". Ohhh-kay... ?

I found about the first of these two albums while browsing through clips of bands that had played on Jimmy Fallon recently. Jack McBrayer (Kenneth from 30 Rock) is a Truckers fan, and he has a brother-in-law in the band.

There was also a clip of Robert Randolph and The Roots playing Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" on Fallon recently. Which is pretty cool, but come on Randolph, new album please!

House of Heroes are releasing a new album called Suburba on August 3rd.

Also, one of the worst bands to ever be signed to a record deal, Attack Attack!, will be releasing a new album June 8th. I'll be sure to stay away from any Hot Topic stores on that day for fear that the album will be blasting from the store speakers.

I see. That other band must be pissed about the confusion that it undoubtedly causes.

There was once a long-running discussion on Iona's mailing list about an American band also called Iona, who also did the Celtic folk thing. It caused a lot of confusion for fans on this side of the Atlantic, as this other band's material was apparently far inferior.

I bought an album one time thinking it was the popular post-metal band Isis. Unfortunately, it was not that Isis. Oh well, at least it was a dollar bin purchase.

Doesn't anyone do research before choosing a band name? It's not that hard.

It can be trickier if the other band with the name you wanted is registered in another country.
