It can be trickier if the other band with the name you wanted is registered in another country.
Good point. These days, though, every band anyone has listened to has a profile on last.fm and they have separate biography's for different artists with the same name, regardless of country. So, I hope some new bands make use of that now.

I've been thinking for a while that the increasing awareness of the band name you wanted already being taken is why we've started to get a lot more off-kilter band names that are scraped from the bottom of the barrel, usually culled from random snippets of conversation the band members were having while playing XBox together at 3 in the morning. Hey, you can't blame 'em - "The Killers" was already taken a few times over.

A 3-Disc re-release of The Cure's Disintegration comes out on June 8th. It'll feature a remastered version of the album plus rarities, demo's, outtakes, and live versions.

Vienna Teng and Alex Wong (of The Paper Raincoat, also her producer and touring drummer) are about to release a live album called The Moment Always Vanishing. It includes, among many of her own excellent songs, Vienna's cover of Radiohead's "Idioteque".

House of Heroes' Suburba and Arcade Fire's The Suburbs release on the same day, August 3 (alright, technically August 2 in the UK for the latter). This coincidence amuses me.

Dang. I had 7/13 as the release date for that. Another disc I'll have to track down after my trip to Canada.

Andrew Peterson's next album, due out July 27, is called Counting Stars. Apparently he dropped the idea to do Resurrection Letters, Volume I as a "sequel" to Volume II.

Three CDs for the price of one, and you still don't get your money's worth! How 'bout that? At least it's crap I've already heard and know to be crap, rather than crap I've haven't yet heard and will feel compelled to listen to just to make sure they still suck.

Let's hope they don't pull a Mae and put all their gear in one basket, only to get it stolen and have the whole project get derailed.

Presumably since they're doing a final tour, they'll finish what they started. It's just extremely delayed, given that the original project would have had all the songs done by December and the last EP presumably out in early 2010. Future of Forestry also had quite a gap in between Travel II and III (and I personally feel that there was a drop in quality there as well). I took the liberty of commenting on SAL's blog and advising them of the pitfalls of starting ambitious on a project like this and then getting sidetracked. Not that Mae could help it in their case... but still. Using Jon Foreman's example, I also suggested that when the project's all wrapped up, they take a vote from fans on the 12 (or however many) best songs from the project, maybe combined with the band members' personal favorites, and release those as a full-length album. I just noticed that Indie Vision Music gave it a 9 out of 10 and called it a front runner for album of the year.

The Suburbs, Suburba *head explodes*
Not really, but it does seem a bit strange. Wonder if their themes are similar.

Someone else should release an album called Da Ghetto today, just to give a balanced perspective.

No, this isn't a joke. The Reign of Kindo actually did an 8-bit remix of their entire album. It'll probably be pretty silly, but I've got to hear it anyway.

Sounds pretty interesting. I still need to check out their new album that everyone here seems to enjoy. I saw today that Mute Math have a live CD/DVD coming out Sept. 21. Also, New Jimmy Eat World Sept. 28. Those two plus Anberlin is going to make September a pretty good music month for me.

Sounds pretty interesting. I still need to check out their new album that everyone here seems to enjoy. I think we've got at least one dissenter who said it wasn't as good as their previous album. Rhythm, Chord & Melody has more of the immediately catchy stuff; it's my personal fondness for musical complexity that makes me go ga-ga over this new album, but even that aspect of the old album was impressive to my ears. Hopefully I'm not overhyping it. I do realize that some of these tracks are so cluttered that it won't be for everyone. Listening to the remix of "Bullets in the Air" right now - what a hilariously amusing mess!

I keep meaning to check out the new album, but I haven't even felt like going back and listening to the first album again since I rated it so I'm hesitant.

I did say it wasn't quite as good as RC&M upon first listen, though it might be a grower for me. I like the album, it just didn't strike a chord (pun intended????) as much as their first album. Edit: 1000 get!

Remember those Beatles remasters last year I decried as being too damn expensive. I was particularly stoked about the mono remasters, but with an MSRP that would make it about $30 a CD, I passed. Well, I may be the only one here who cares since Josh doesn't post much anymore, but Bob Dylan is doing basically the same thing quite a bit better. Relatively inexpensive CD setKind of pricey, but it's vinyl and they always areI don't know if this means I'll get them. I already have the SACD remasters of most of these albums (on the cheap from yourmusic a few years ago, too). But, this is still not too bad in terms of pricing and what you get. If I have $250 extra squirreled away sometime between now and Dec., who knows?

This already came, but I somehow completely missed it. The U2 concert I attended at the Rose Bowl last year was released as their live performance DVD for the 360 Tour. I knew that would be a landmark concert for me, but I didn't realize what a landmark it was for them as well. Strangely, the DVD track listing dropped a song from the actual concert, which I guess isn't that unusual, except that it was "Breathe", which was the opening song.
