In the same vein as "arial or helvitica"...

Cheese or Font?

As the name suggests, it gives you a name, you decide if it's a name of a cheese or the name of a font.

to me, many of them seem like they should be wines.

maybe I'm just whining because I have gotten so many wrong.

just thought I'd link to the Arial/Helvetica quiz.
I was pleased that I got 100% on my first try, though I had to guess on one of them (MATTEL...I could tell that the M and the A were different, but I didn't know which was which. I chose the one that I thought looked better as Helvitica and I was right...)

hehe. cool. I picked the one that seemed to have better kerning.

the blog entry about the quiz mentioned that some of the Arial logos look awful. I can't really see the overall awfulness--I just notice certain letters and think they look inelegant. maybe I can't see an ugly forest, just ugly trees.

Kerning isn't necessarily a property of the font so much as of the typesetting engine. Arial in LaTeX is going to have better kerning than Helvitica in MS Word...

I just meant that instead of using at the letters themselves (which is what I did for the others) or the logo as a whole (which doesn't seem to tell me anything) to base my guess, I looked at the spacing between the letters. one logo seemed like it didn't fit the starburst shape as well, so I figured that was the fake one.

I got all but the Mattel one right. My tried-and-true test for if it's Helvetica vs. Arial is to look at the letters like e, c, s, etc. I don't know the technical term, but the "ends" of the letters are totally flat versus at an angle. Of course this only works if there is one of those letters present in the word, but if so, it's easy.

Yeah, if there's a c or a t or a R then it's pretty much a giveaway (I'm sure there's a technical term for what you're talking about, but if so I don't know it, but I know what you're saying).
