It's kind of rare for me to get on a soapbox, but here it goes.

I'm sick of email forwards, but especially weary of the ones I get from fellow Christians.  All too often, they fall under "urban legend", and the twist to pass it on or you're embarrassed about Jesus is ridiculous.  The one I got today was the typical story of the college freshman showing up his strident atheist philosophy professor.  Source, pics, video, names, something, or it didn't happen.  A Chick tract doesn't count.

Oh, and candy canes were not created by a humble confectioner trying to share the story of Jesus (we even had someone share this yarn during children's time at church).

and John Lennon was killed by a madman, not divine comeuppance for something he said years before.

Obama is not a muslim.

I thought honesty was a virtue, but the list goes on.  I'm sure many here have some to share.

The stuff that gets on my nerves is the flag-waving, xenophobic stuff, often with religion mingled into it.

My Pub songs:

Ashley Cleveland - "Willy" (from Big Town)
Margaret Becker - "I Don't Want To Be Without You" (from The Reckoning)
Out Of The Grey - "The Deep" (from Live 12.6.2000)

Yeah, those are probably the worst, as they stand in stark contrast to fundamental tenets of Christianity (but I get annoyed by the lies in general).

That's interesting, because I almost never get these. However, a friend just today sent me this one, which is inoffensive and possibly even inspiring as e-mail forwards go, but (me being a skeptic and all) prompted me to Google it and find out that it's false (though not blatantly false, and you could probably jigger with numbers and translations a bit to make it true).

I used to get the forwards, some of the Christian sort and some of the usual variety, and I would reply with a link that debunked the urban legend. the people who forwarded them stopped emailing me altogether. (but that is probably due to reasons other than the replies to the forwards.)

it especially bugs me when some people are like "it has to be true--somebody in a position of authority sent it and I'm sure he knows what he's talking about!"  rolleyes

Interesting article...I thought it was very thoughtfully written, and it appears that the authors did their homework.

Came up again.  On our church bulletin board, the email referenced here was posted in its entirety, but I don't know who posted it.  It didn't sound like Graham to me - a little too sanctimonious - so I looked it up.

So, to forward the link to the pastor and let him handle it, or to take the passive-agressive approach and post the snopes piece right next to the original forward?  Hmm...leaning passive aggressive, honestly.  The lack of fact-checking in something posted for all to see (visitors, etc.) bothers me greatly.

Post the Snopes piece. That would be awesome.

Honestly, most of my friends stopped forwarding me stupid stuff like that years ago. I think it had something to do with my bad habit of replying all to chide someone for not checking their facts about, say, Proctor & Gamble being owned by the Satanic church, or SARS being found in fruits at our local Asian supermarket. (The latter wasn't religious in nature, but factually inaccurate nonetheless.) Now some of them just post that stuff to Facebook. Most don't bother. I'm probably lucky.

Even with the innocent "Forward this to 100 people and Jesus will bless you!" stuff, I found it best to just stop adding fuel to that fire. I'm pretty sure God isn't gonna let that starving kid in Africa die on account of my failing to forward an Email.

I uploaded the snopes piece, and I got a reply this week.  Writer said that while it wasn't Graham or Harvey, the prayer was still offered, and then said that snopes "has an agenda".

Well, you know me.  The paper as it is now:

This is only sorta on topic, but Bloop, thank you for the link to Patton Oswald's Christmas Shoes rant. I think that song is in the same category as most email forwards!
