I caught this movie last night and absolutely loved it. It reminded me a bit of Catch Me If You Can and Bandits, both of which I also loved, all mixed together. If you've seen it, what did you think? And if you haven't seen it, why in the world not?

This is interesting; I loved Catch Me but thought Bandits was merely okay, at best. I'm looking forward to seeing Matchstick Men, especially since you and my two favorite critics have both given it positive reviews.

CMIYK was indeed good, but I haven't caught the other one. I live a half-hour bus ride away from the nearest theater, but I may catch it on DVD

Well, it was definitely not a bad film, but I didn't think it was quite as good as beautifulmess made it out to be. A bit too sentimental for me...I give it a B.

I haven't seen it and haven't really been interested. I didn't care much for Catch Me or Bandits and don't really care for Nicholas Cage. I do like Alison Lohman though.

I thought he was good in Gone in 60 Seconds. It wasn't a great movie, but it was good enough that I didn't have the urge to throw up afterwards (like I felt after The Fast and the Furious, another car movie). But I don't like blatant sentimentality, so Emericana's comment makes me a bit wary.
Someone needs to get a review up.

This mini-review from MSNBC: Why ruin a film about con men with family drama? Somehow director Ridley Scott fails to weave the strands together in this flick about an obsessive-compulsive con (Nicholas Cage) who discovers that he has a daughter (Alison Lohman) on the eve of a big job.

Cage was great in Raising Arizona.
Looking Closer gave it a B, and Decent Films gave it 3 stars, I think. So it sounds like it's worth seeing, but not the must-see film of the fall.

The review made it sound like it was a good idea that was poorly executed.

I did think from the preview that the whole family thing was kinda strange.

No no guys, the family part of it is integral to the film! Did the MSNBC ppl walk out on the ending or something? It's the heart of the picture!
Anyways, I saw Matchstick Men and it was clever, I'll give you that, but I guessed the twist before they got there. It was where Cage dropped off his daughter. And then in the car he tells her one of the big rules is when you're conning someone, make sure you're not being conned. But it was still a good film.

i thought it was good but not great. i really didn't see the twist coming, which was lovely. i can usually spot them a mile away, which either means i watch way too many movies, or that people just don't do them well (with the exception of a few). matchstick men is really cute and well put-together. the jumpy cut editing bothered me at first (and that usually doesn't - i mean, i'm a huge baz luhrmann fan, so if rapid-fire jumpy editing bugged you then he'd make you want to tear your hair out), but i relaxed into it and it really does serve a purpose and fits well with nicolas cage's character. the things that bugged me (e.g. alison lohman being waay too excited about things like him teaching her a con) actually made a ton of sense after the twist. i thought the epilogue bit was kind of weird...but i'm not sure how else you could end it.
anyway, bottom line: 3.5 out of 5 stars from me
