I was on letssingit.com, where I always go for lyrics, and after looking for U2's lyrics I got a message saying that "This band has requested that their lyrics be removed from the Internet. In respect of these wishes, we have none of their lyrics in our database." This makes me wonder a couple things:
-Why would U2 do this, and what do they hope to accomplish? -It's hoplessly naive to ask for something to be 'removed from the Internet' (see the RIAA thread and all the U2 lyrics at lyrics.com for more info)
Anyone else heard about this?

If you don’t have freedom as a principle, you can never see a reason not to make an exception. There are constantly going to be times when for one reason or another there’s some practical convenience in making an exception. rms

I think I've seen quite a few bands not on letsingit with that message. You're right that it's kind of fruitless to ask an internet site not to list your lyrics, given the vastness of the internet. Fan sites are usually pretty good for getting lyrics, although where the artist is unclear vocally, you get conflicting lyrics from different sites.

It must have something to do with this particular site, not the concept of having your lyrics online in general; you can read lyrics to ALL of U2's songs at u2.com, so they obviously don't mind having their stuff available on the web.

A lot of times these "band requests" are just record label requests. I believe it is actually illegal to reproduce lyrics without permission from the owners, so I guess they aren't supposed to have them up. SIlly rule, waste of time to enforce, but remember, these are record companies.

Fun facts about Chuck Norris:
Newton's Third Law is wrong: Although it states that for each action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, there is no force equal in reaction to a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick.
Chuck Norris can divide by zero.
Chuck Norris CAN believe it's not butter.

Ahh, good point. That may be it. If so, is U2 violating the wishes of their own record label?

Lyrics or the reproduction thereof aren't "owned" by record labels, but rather by the writers, which are generally represented by their respective publishers. Since most of these sites do not possess a mechanical license to visually reproduce the lyrics on their sites (this has be be purchased through the publisher), the writer and/or publisher do not get paid every time these lyrics get accessed.
Official websites usually are granted special permission to display the lyrics on the artist's websites, especially when these aren't included in a particular CDs booklet (for which labels still need permission to print them).
Hope that made sense.
Peace out, Andree

One of Radiohead's album jackets- I think OK Computer- has a little blurb that says, "Thank you to our publisher for letting us use these lyrics, even though we wrote them in the first place." =D
