I'd like people to explain to me what they like about this show and what draws them to watching this.  I've tried and tried and I just don't like it at all.  So, your thoughts?

First thing's first, I think the football is the weakest part of the show.  Mostly, I like the characters and story - they seem real to me, and the acting is top-notch for the most part.  It's hard to go into much more detail than that.

Well, I'm about 12 episodes into the first season, so I can't really speak for the series as a whole, but I am definitely really loving it so far. I think what has sucked me in mainly is the writing and acting. Some of the acting is less than stellar (Hi, Lyla!), but there are so many scenes and exchanges of dialogue where I am left feeling how realistic and true it seems. The situations can get a bit soap opera-y, but that is par for the course for dramatic television, and for high schoolers for that matter. It's nice to watch a really good show about normal people in a small midwestern/southern town. Growing up in a football-obsessed town also gives it an extra appeal to me, though I think people would enjoy it who don't enjoy or know much about football, too. I dig the handheld camera work, too - it gives it a fluidity and realism that is appealing.

I will say I especially love the relationship between Coach Taylor and his wife. It's supremely well written and acted. It just rings so true, and is so great to watch a healthy marital relationship on television (that isn't over the top perfect, either).

Oh, and I like the music, too. Explosions in the Sky paints a great sonic backdrop.

I can see where you're coming from on the writing but I've found the acting as a whole to be painful to watch.

Hmm . . . I think the teenagers generally act like teenagers, which is painful enough I suppose.

I can't see much fault in the acting.  Can you name specific characters?

The only people I've ever thought seemed like they weren't acting well were the girl who plays Lyla (a little over the top with the clenched teeth and the emoting sometimes) and on an occasion or two, Riggins, but for the most part I think it's all really well-acted.

IDK, Riggins plays a convincing drunk.  Method actor, maybe?   :ρ

Having watched all three seasons so far, I think it rings true as to how normal teenagers act, what life in small Southern, football-loving towns looks like and the writing is excellent.  Those who are only in Season One, I thought the same thing about Lyla's acting.  She gets better.  By the second season she doesn't seem like the same actress.

It's my favorite show on TV.

Yes, having watched it all now, I'd agree that Lyla's acting does get a lot better. It was pretty obvious at first that she was a novice actor.

I love absolutely everything about this show. I can't wait for it to come back on April 30th! Anyone else plan on watching or already watched it when it aired on DirecTV?

I'm one of the lucky ones with DirecTV. In my opinion, this season has been one of the darkest, but also one its best. It feels like the producers know they have two years to tell their story, so this season is really putting the characters in tough situations, and I see the build to redemption/triumph/etc. taking until the final season.

Without spoiling anything for those who haven't seen it, I've been pleasantly surprised with the new characters (and there a ton due to Coach Taylor's new school and the graduation of some of the key players last year) and only disappointed in how one old character was written out.

I'm so glad to hear that! I knew they were adding a few new characters and I've been kind of nervous about that. I'm really going to miss Matt Saracen and Lyla Garrity. They were my two favorite characters.
