I'm sure some of you have probably heard about the music video for OK Go's "This Too Shall Pass" that is making the rounds. No less than three people who I follow on Facebook (one of them being Vienna Teng) posted links to it today. I don't even know anything about OK Go, but the Rube Goldberg device they set up in this video, which is shot in one continuous take, is amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qybUFnY7Y8w

This inspired me to start a thread for music videos that I think are worth rewatching (or even watching once, since to me, most music videos aren't).

Alanis Morissette's "Precious Illusions"
In which she predicts the sixth season of LOST before the series even premieres (OK, maybe she just watched Sliding Doors too many times)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tukqRdtYDoU

Fleet Foxes' "White Winter Hymnal"
Claymation!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrQRS40OKNE

The New Pornographers' "Use It"
Apt description of the music industry's relationship with its artists.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpvqU2cmK8I

And a few we've discussed here previously:

Bjork's "Bachelorette"
Self-reference to the nth degree!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a1bfbk_yQU

Coldplay's "Strawberry Swing"
Surreal stop-motion animation using chalk art
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lb9X5jMofEo

Radiohead - "Just"
Saw this before I was even into Radiohead. WHAT DID HE SAY??!?!?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIFLtNYI3Ls

I know there are more than I'm just not remembering right now. What are some of your favorites?

Smashing Pumpkins - "Tonight Tonight"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQSxwzOngMU

Bjork - "All Is Full of Love"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJtdojTD9iA

Kenna - "Hell Bent"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5kyRn9CKTc

from the "wtf" file,
Animal Collective - "Brothersport"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGQjyGT1-mc

U2 - "Numb"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2lbiS1fris

I'm sure I'll think of more.  I'm not much of a video person really.

Indeed.  I love watching Rube Goldberg devices in general, but that one especially impressed me.

Come to think of it, this wasn't the first OK Go video that really stood out to me.  Here's one I really liked from a few years ago:

OK GO: "Here It Goes Again"
(Also known as "The treadmill video")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTAAsCNK7RA

Here are some of my other favorite videos.  Note that I have quite a few silly ones in here.

Fatboy Slim: "Weapon of Choice"
(Christopher Walken as a dancing machine!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7Ky5R-vxns&feature=fvst

Jamiroquai: "Virtual Insanity"
(Gotta love the "moving floor")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JkIs37a2JE

Beastie Boys: "Body Moviin'"
(So silly I love it.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTQ3MNPxyfA&feature=fvst

David Crowder Band: "Foreverandever Etc."
(An animated David Crowder vs. the evil squirrels!  I actually forwarded this to my Dad because he was having problems with squirrels in his attic.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nSd9bVMTNQ

I will also second the suggestions of "Precious Illusions", "Bachelorette" and "Numb."

If I think of some more, I'll post them.

My current pub songs:
Andrew Peterson: "The Reckoning (How Long)" (from Counting Stars)
Jars of Clay: "Out of My Hands" (from an upcoming release)
The Mynabirds: "Numbers Don't Lie" (from What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood)

Mute Math did an awesome backwards rendition of "Typical" live on Jimmy Kimmel, which was then played with forwards audio and reverse video to recreate the basic idea of the music video, but with paint splatters flying off of them and broken equipment being put back together and so forth. Unfortunately YouTube has killed the audio of all posted versions of this, since they just used the album version of the song.

I wish I could find the footage of this song starting to be performed on SNL's 25th anniversary special, only for Elvis Costello to bust in, claim there's no reason to play this song, and have the rest of the B-Boys turn out to be Costello's backing band, who throw off their disguises and subsequently play "Radio Radio" (the song they were banned from SNL for bait-and-switching in a similar manner way back in the day).

I've started recognizing the url.

A co-worker told me he had almost memorized the string. Apparently this has happened to him a lot. He said that at a firm he used to work at, just to get back at a co-worker who did it to him, he printed out 60 pages of ASCII art depicting Rick Astley's face and left it on the guy's desk with a cover sheet saying "Important Security Report".

I propose that someone should invent a Firefox plugin which keeps you from getting Rickrolled.

Short of recognizing the URL, I don't know how one would know. (Plus it could always be re-upped to YouTube and have a different URL.) Should I have not clicked on any of the video links offered? Even if I suspected something was up, how would I verify without actually clicking the link?

Couldn't you verify it- at least partially- if you copy/pasted the URL to a search engine to see what came up?

I sure could.

http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&q=http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DZOU8GIRUd_g&aq=f&aqi=g1&oq=

Though, if you extend the definition of Rickrolling to subjecting a person to the mere mention or likeness of Astley, rather than specifically subjecting them to the video, this might still fall under that definition. (Have I still been had if I anticipate ahead of time that I may have been had and investigate in a roundabout and more time-consuming manner?)

In any event, bloop, you got me there. (Though it would be hilarious if Sufjan had covered "Never Gonna Give You Up". Anything's possible at this stage in his byzantine career.)

I think it depends on the definition of being "had." In this case, it's more of an ambiguous term, so it could go either way depending on who defines what being "had" is-- which can vary with each individual. One person could say they weren't had if they took the time-consuming approach, but the same person could also be seen as being had if we define had by taking the time to investigate the matter at all.

I just figured that was part of the joke of rickrolling. You made the person waste the couple of seconds it took to realize they'd been tricked (or someone was attempting to trick them).

You have to at least get to the part where the barkeep shows his dancing chops.

That's enough to give it a mention in this thread.

Given that you've been rickrolled only twice, and both times by bloop, maybe you should narrow the rule to not blindly clicking on bloop's links.

I know I rickrolled somebody here.  I thought it was you, but maybe not?

Also, "Never Gonna Give You Up" is the jam, true story.

The other solution is to click on everything and just not admit you clicked on the ones that lead to rickroll.  Easy, clean, simple.  :ρ

Since you didn't cite an artist or song title, I was paranoid and Googled the URL first, just to be sure I wasn't about to get trololoed or something.

But yeah, that was awesome. If I'd just heard the song, there's no way I'd have expected the video to have a sense of humor.

For Coldplay videos, "Strawberry Swing" is likely their best, but I'm still partial to "The Scientist".

Also, Kylie Minogue - "Come Into My World"

This one, by Michael Gondry, I think.  The Chemical Brothers - "Let Forever Be"

I like it for its depiction of record company executives.

Speaking of backwards videos, any small amount of controversy aside, I like Erykah Badu's "Window Seat".  You can watch it forward there, too.

SNL parodied this last night. This is kind of like Tina Fey parodying Sarah Palin by repeating stuff she said almost verbatim.

The Knife - Handyman

An interesting music video to say the least. Another note is that this is really sung by a woman whose voice has been heavily modulated, which this band does quite a bit.
