I have noticed that the majority of the topics focus on Linkin Park, Radiohead, R.e.m.(Never thought I would see fans of lp and rem and rh discussing regularly on one board but hey being unique is cool!) etc which is ok.....but I hope someone can agree with me when I say lets talk about something else!!!! please!!! so this topic is for someone who is listening to a band other than radiohead, r.em. or linkin park..or an artist like david bowie (ugh!) What band other than those mentioned above (and I love U2 but lets leave them out of this topic at least) maybe you guys have no other bands you like (lol) but if you do this is the place to discuss them.

I see what you are saying, though I still think its fun to talk about those bands, despite what others might think. Lets see, other bands....What do you think about Sixpence None the Richer? Do you think they will continue on, and keep making solid albums, or will they dwindle off into obscurity? Have you heard anything from them lately?

Personally, I think Sixpence, if they continue, will never really get "big". I'm thinking they'll probably dwindle into obscurity, known as a one-hit wonder with "Kiss Me". I like 'em, and I will keep following them (I believe that they'll keep making solid stuff), and I wish nothing but the best for them; however, realistically, I think they've hit their peak at least in popularity, and perhaps a plateau artistically.
Other bands to discuss...
Switchfoot anyone? I'm going to a Switchfoot concert next month! I'm really excited. So what do you think about their arrival in mainstream secular music? The Beautiful Letdown was at number 85 on the Billboard charts. Do you think it's all uphill from here? Downhill? Do you like their last album, or do the other albums strike you as more creative? Any other thoughts about 'em?
::Looks through CDs::
What's ppl's take on Lifehouse? Good, bad, ugly? Do you like 'em, hate 'em, don't care? Are they doomed to be a one-hit wonder with Hanging By a Moment, or will they storm the airwaves again with another brilliant single?
And lastly... Anyone here a Jack Johnson fan? What do you think? Which albums better: brushfire or on and on or they both sound the same? How far do you think he'll go?
Well, that's about it. I'll once again encourage everyone to get their hands on something by MaryMary--but alas, no one listens to my advice. They're really good. I promise. =)

anyone like sunny day real estate? they actually just renamamed themselves the fire theft, but most of the old members are still around (something about issues with their record label?) anyway, i know most of their original SDRE stuff and i think they're amazing. they're also apparently christians, the lead singer had a conversian a while back, i read his "letter to the fans" about hwo his life has now changed, etc. they're awesome, i dont know, i dont have the "technical music verbage" that others seem to have to describe them, but give them a listen!

I should get The Beautiful Letdown by next week, so I will be able to answer that better. What's ppl's take on Lifehouse? Good, bad, ugly? Do you like 'em, hate 'em, don't care? Are they doomed to be a one-hit wonder with Hanging By a Moment, or will they storm the airwaves again with another brilliant single? I liked Hanging By A Moment, but wasn't too impressed with the whole album. I should probably try it again. I supposed I should try Mary Mary, just to be fair, but when I think of them, I think of Destiny's Child, whose "Say My Name" song was good, but all the other stuff I heard from them was too electronic-y and boring.

There are plenty of other bands I like, but wouldn't get much discussion here, I don't think. Radiohead, REM, U2, etc. are at least known by a quantity of people on this board. If I started talking about the Microphones, Dntel (or Death Cab), Modest Mouse, the Wrens, the Mars Volta, or Neutral Milk Hotel, I doubt I would get too many responses so I think part of it is necessity. I think others know The Flaming Lips, but I may easily be their #1 fan on this board. In other words, I'm not exactly an obscurantist, but a lot of the things I listen to are not really conversation-starters on most message boards.
Oh, I know. Other 80s bands that are up there with U2 and REM:
Sonic Youth the Smiths Lou Reed (fmr. Velvet Underground)
What do y'all think of them?

I don't think MaryMary's stuff is electronicy. I think they're better than Destiny's Child to tell you the truth. They have amazing voices. The melodies are really awesome. What attracts me to their music is not so much the "instrumentation", though that's cool too, but the vocals. I think rock music often lacks in the quality of vocals. That's why I love MaryMary so much. Plus, you can dance to it. You can clap to it! It has strong rhythms. It's so hard to dance to rock music, you know? But if you've tried 'em, and don't like 'em, that's cool, but you can't deny that the sisters are very *very* talented. (And they are far from boring.)
Yeah, I don't listen to Lifehouse's albums very much. Occasionally, I get in Lifehouse moods, and then I usually prefer the newer one.
I'll have to try Sunny Day Real Estate. Never heard of 'em or heard their music for that matter.

I think U2, Radiohead, and REM are bands that simply lend themselves well to conversation; some bands give us more to talk about than others, and those three are very discussable. But yeah, Matt, you're right- we need to branch out.
Here are some other favorites that we don't discuss around her very much:
The Innocence Mission Peter Gabriel Bob Dylan Sam Phillips Iona Beck

Allmusic describes them as Post-Rock/Experimental, Neo-Psychedelia, Post-Hardcore, which I guess is an ok descriptor.

Well on the subject of sixpence none the richer I think that right now they are my favorite "ccm" artist if I had to choose one although I don't find myself listening to them with a lot regularity, I think they are improving though, when I first heard them i thought they were a watered down over the rhine but that opinion has changed. I respect people like switchfoot, jars of clay, and vigilantes of love because they are moving christian music in a better musical and creative step however their music doesnt do much for me. and lifehouse I still cant tell the difference between their two hit singles on the radio they sound so much alike

i agree, matt. although i do like those three bands *esp. radiohead LOVE em*, i usually like to get online to discover and discuss newer music i wouldn't have found out about otherwise. my take on some of those: switchfoot .... i think they're great and i have huge respect for jon foreman but i can only take so much of their music.. it's repetitive to me.. jars of clay i really like esp. their older stuff.. and again mucho respect for them, esp. lead singer dan haseltine lifehouse i actually love.. their first album is one of my all-time favorites. songwriting has such depth. were they a one-hit band? i have no clue.. but i never really care anyway cuz i don't really listen to top-hit radio stations.. sixpence none the richer are awesome i love their album sunny day real estate i've been wanting to get into but don't know their stuff yet and JACK JOHNSON??? i LOVE the guy!!! and he surfs too which is so cool. one of the most laid-back guys ever, and is music is incredible. Brushfire Fairytales in the best in my book, although On and On is decent. but Brushfire Fairytales is, in my entire collection of cds, my favorite album in the world to chill-out too. most people love it i've found.. anybody here know of the band Jump Little Children? they're phenomenal, you should all check 'em out..

Well, this has nothing to do with all of the previous bands stated, but some music here's some more music that i like:
Saxon Shore-wow, these guys are good; a bit like unwed sailor except maybe obscure and even cure inspired...
Engine Down-awesome VA band. definitely worth a listen.
Denali-another awesome VA band. actually, the singer maura davis is keely davis' sister (he's in engine down) so they have a good vibe.
These arms are snakes-MeWithoutYou anyone? Good jadetree band
The Hot Snakes- nice, gritty trashy rock with an edge.
Ester Drang-this is what you get when you put the flaming lips and mogwai in a blender
Sigur Ros-the essential post rock band.
well, that's just a few...i always tend to find out about new bands all of the time. =D

I [3 The Mars Volta. Way less Rage-y than At The Drive-In. Very eclectic and rhythmic in spots. Also, highly tribal from time to time.
Dakona is a new band whose debut is coming out in like two weeks. Somewhat derivative-sounding, but still solid anthemic pop/rock.
Damien Rice... I think I've talked about him enough... just get his album before he blows up... (might be a bit of a downer for some, but I love it still).
Peace out, Andree

I love Lifehouse. No Name Face will forever be a favorite of mine & Jason Wade's songwriting really connects with me. It's weird, because if I play that album in a room of people, they always go "who is this? they sound so familar!". Nobody has ever really listened to the whole album, I guess.

EMINEM NO! Never! I won't let you! And all of AAR songs are about breaking up. That has to count against them somehow. Here is a new artist(not a band, I know):Steve Earle! How many here have heard his Transendental Blues album? It is a great mix of a whole bunch of styles, and it has some very sharp lyrics, too. Anyone else familiar with this man?

I would like to push Rosie Thomas some more. I am honestly not "emo" but she is one of two vocalists who have ever made me cry (and not in just a sentimental, gushy, love song, way, the other being karin bergquist) I cannot wait for her cd to come out tuesday. And yes hard music critics will debate that the songwriting and song structure needs to improve or vary but I believe she does continue to improve and especially with what I have heard off her new album. If you ever get a chance to see her live, I highly recommend to go. I consider her a musical treasure.

He mixes country, folk, rock, and some blues elements into his songs. So I guess nobody here has heard of him? Oh well. Check him out. As for Eminem being better than the blues, thats just crazy. There isn't one shred of evidence to support that.

Boy am I gonna catch some flak for this one... Yes, I think you will. Thats not being open minded in the slightest, and you really not to be open minded with music. I appreciate different types of music for their different things. Rock for its new way of expressing things and it catchy nature, classical for its great beauty and awesome arrangements, jazz, for its improvisational complexity and its "swing value", blues for its wonderful, base level portrayal of human emotions and great guitar work, and though I don't really think I like rap, I have to respect its rythmic creativity and sometimes playful rhymes. Having a broad palette of music to listen can only increase your enjoyment of other genres.

I suppose your last point makes sense: if I listen to blues, it will make me like my favorite genres much, much better. Perhaps I should try it...

I'm not going to ridicule anyone for disliking the blues, though I don't really understand it; my above comment was a joke.
But bashing a genre that you admit to having no knowledge of is foolish.
At least I was fair enough to listen to Linkin Park and decide for myself whether or not I like their music; I think you owe the same to the blues genre.
Dylan's Time Out of Mind is a masterful blues record.
