I guess all good things must come to an end. I'd be more bummed about this if I had liked
The Great American Midrange
more, but to me that album felt like they were losing steam.
I'm still mildly curious about the live & rare collection. Not sure if I'm curious enough to buy it.

That's too bad, although it does sound like it's time for them to move on. They had quite a few songs I liked as well, so if nothing else, I appreciate the memories. I've also had a chance to see them live twice, although it would have been nice to see them after they went Mainstream. Still, I have more positive than negative feelings here.
I'll probably post my list of my favorite Elms songs within the next few days.

Yeah. I liked The Elms more as a live band (and for Thom Daugherty's general attitude) than I liked them as a studio band.

Same here. There's probably only 4 or 5 songs by them that do anything for me. I only saw them live once and I was very impressed.

As I mentioned earlier, I have come up with a list of my favorite Elms songs. Here's my top 20:
20. I've Been Wrong
19. A Minute to Ourselves
18. Nothin' to Do With Love
17. Who Puts Rock 'N' Roll in Your Blood?
16. Promises (unreleased)
15. Go Toward the Glow
14. Come to Me
13. The Chess Hotel
12. Burn and Shine
11. Speaking in Tongues
10. Real Men Cry
09. The Little Ways
08. The Downtown King
07. Through the Night
06. Black Peach
05. Who Got The Meaning?
04. She's Cold!
03. This is How The World Will End
02. You Got No Room to Talk!
01. The Towers & The Trains
My top 3 were pretty obvious, and there were 5 songs that were clearly in the next echelon for me. After that, it was almost like splitting hairs when it came to ranking the songs. You will see this list is pretty heavy on
The Chess Hotel
, and obviously that's my favorite album of theirs.

I think my all-time favorite was "Speaking in Tongues". "The Towers and the Trains", "I Am the World", and "The Downtown King" were up there, too. From their most recent album, the only song I got truly excited about was "This Is How the World Will End", which would likely make a Top 10 list if I constructed such a thing.
