This may not mean a lot to you guys, but i found out from a friend that Dana Key of Degarmo and Key passed away last night.  I was a huge fan of D&K, along with WhiteHeart and Petra, as a teenager, and got to meet him at a couple of different places.  They weren't all that groundbreaking, but they were a huge influence on getting me into realizing there was fun and pretty good Christian rock type music, along with the other bands I mentioned, and for that I'm forever grateful.

D&K was one of the first Christian rock bands I got into, right before they broke up. I mostly knew their later stuff (I had Heat.It.Up. and To Extremes, plus one of their greatest hits collections), and it was cheesy but fun. Sorry to hear about Key's passing. That's part of my youth gone, I guess.

I don't know the music, but I'm sad to hear that.

Did you ever hear the Newsboys song "Boycott Hell"? That was a cover of a D&K classic. Bonus points: The Newsboys made fun of the lyrics in a rap break.

Unfortunately, no.  My Newsboys knowledge starts at Going Public and ends with Take Me To Your Leader, aside from a smattering of radio songs.

You've mostly got the best of 'em there, but just for fun, try Not Ashamed some time.

sorry to hear this. I don't follow CCM anymore, but I liked D&K when I was a kid. Rock Solid: Absolutely Live was one of my first Christian rock cassettes. I think I mainly wanted it because the cover looked cool but my dad wouldn't buy it for me because it said "rock" on it. I knew it was more like "Jesus is the rock" than "rock and roll" (which was bad). okay, I knew it was "rock and roll" too.

about Boycott Hell, I remember hearing it and not knowing what "boycott" meant. I looked it up in the dictionary but still didn't understand how hell could be boycotted. still liked the song though and was kind of like "that's mean!" when I found out the Newsboys made fun of it.

I don't have the Rock Solid cassette anymore, but awhile back I had bought a greatest hits collection that had many of the same songs. maybe I will dig it out and listen to it again.

I was just thinking today that it didn't make much sense to me. I suppose I could rationalize it somewhat as the "holy picket line" being like an actual barrier where you're refusing to let people into hell. Basically, winning souls by default because you forcibly prevent them from going over to the dark side. Which is, of course, rather silly when you try to put it into practice. Like much CCM from that era, it caught on because it sounded clever, not because it actually made sense. (And to be fair, how many mainstream rock hits of the era actually made sense?)

Though the song does allow the phrase "Hell no, we won't go!" to be taken quite literally.

at the time I had no idea what a holy picket line could be. there may have been some confusion about it being a holey pick-it line. like, you pick people from the line, and that makes holes in it. kind of like...Red Rover?

That's brilliant. I wish I'd had you around to help me interpret songs when I was in high school.
