I was looking at my sorry excuse for a lawn today and wondering why it was that even after all these years grass has not evolved to actually live through the summer. I think it's because we're actually breeding grass to be weak by watering it during dry spells. Well, I resolved to do my part for future generations by not watering my lawn anymore. I figure that in a few years, the hardy grass which can survive the summer will spread and my evolutionarily superior lawn will form a master race and put my neighbors' lawns in concentration camps.

(I'm not sure why this deserved its own thread, except that I really wanted to use the title "Grass: what is up with that?".)

I have a co-worker who grows what he calls a ground cover instead of grass. I think that's a pretty generic term, but from his description I think it's sort of a leafy, slightly viney thing.

Personally, I'm considering astroturf.

According to my mom and mother-in-law, who are both great gardeners, the best watering is a good deep soaking about once a week. That way the water penetrates deep enough to encourage the grass to send roots down deep, making them drought resistant.

I on the other hand, rock a yard of dandelions and clover.

Interesting...

What constitutes a "deep" soaking? A large quantity of water, or is there something else that makes it deep?
