Rich Mullins. Need I say more? What an amazing person. What amazing music. Wow.
So, on Friday, I picked up the Here in America release. It was a CD-DVD double disc set, with a CD of rare clips and demos, and a DVD of a Studio B concert and 12 short talks he gave at a college. The Studio B concert blew me away. Literally (I'm gonna watch soon, right after I stop posting). He's a great pianist and an awesome hammer-dulcimerist (?). I love watching him play hammer dulcimer. And the Bach invention he did with the other guy on guitar was great too. All the songs were gorgeous. The CD was cool, too, but I wish the songs on the DVD were on CD, like a live CD. I definitely advise you to check this out!
I also picked up Never Picture Perfect. While the Nations Rage is a great song. It has a Native American flute in it, and it just adds the perfect touch. Not all the songs on their are good, but granted, this was his second album.
I have burned copies of the Jesus Record and Demos and The World as Best as I can Remember It Vol 1 and 2. Good stuff. I love Calling Out Your Name. It's great.
The guy's lyrics rock. They're so poetic. "There's more that rises in the morning than the sun"--what a great line. That's just one line. There are many more. And he sings very clearly--no need for a lyric sheet. He's honest, brutally honest about life, faith and God.
And the man's so profound. If you get Here in America,a you'll understand what I mean. He really loved His savior, and He really built his foundation upon the Word. And his understanding of the world is just amazing. He has a great mind.
Anyway, go get some Rich Mullins. Probably the later stuff, because I think he really hit his peak then. Here in America is a good introduction to the man and his music. I highly suggest it.
Welp, I think I'll do some hw and listen to some Mullins. Laterz.

I've enjoyed Rich's music since the late 80's, when "Awesome God" was just starting to be played on the radio. (wow, I feel old). his concert was my first one, I think. he's an all-time favorite singer/songwriter of mine. on Here in America, I especially love the Bach invention...and Screen Door...and the making rain hidden track... he had us do that too, but I had forgotten until I heard the track.
one small correction: Never Picture Perfect was his fourth album. his first was self-titled, second was Pictures in the Sky, and third, Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth.

I like Rich Mullins (surprise! ), but my only exposure to him has been one tape (that's right, tape) that my dad (that's right, my dad) owns.

Yes, Rich Mullins is good, but so is Keith Green, and nobody wants to talk about him. Rich Mullins probably had better lyrics, but I've always enjoyed Keith's music more.

I have heard his CDs Sooooooooooooooooooooooo much. he is very good though. Its a mark of greatness when you have listened to a CD for what probably amounts to two years straight of listening time, and its still good. Its a good thing we have CDs, because tapes wear out with that kind of play.

I recently picked up The Jesus Record at the library and was blown away by what I heard. I haven't really been exposed to a ton of his music but I hope to change that soon.

totally with you on this one, afroboy. where do i even begin on rich mullins.... he is my hero. he is like my ultimate guy to look up to. he was such an incredible artist and person. humble and honest and unpretentious. totally cared about others and introducing them to God's love, nothing more, because he knew that God would take care of the rest. it was like his life MISSION to let others know about God's love. and his life, man.. the guy made the salary of a rock star but chose to live in a humble trailer on an indian reservation in New Mexico and teach the kids there music.... he only received the salary of an average-working American man and had his financial guy give the rest to the poor... he would refuse limo rides so he could ride on the truck with the equipment guys at concert... he was just so down-to-earth.
plus the man was a musical genius... i esp. love the album A Liturgy, A Legacy, and a Ragamuffin Band.
afroboy, if you liked that concert, you should pick up his live concert tape from Texas. i think you can get it on kidbrothers.net, the best website on him. anyway, it's outstanding. filmed a couple months before he died, and he's as raw and honest and incredible as ever on it. seriously...
i went through this huge Mullins phase for a while a couple years ago, and i read every interview he ever did and every article on him and every article he wrote. i read the book on him which is also amazing. i know i must sound like a crazed fan but it was really just that i was in awe and his words were addicting... wow, i could start a whole post on just fav. quotes from him.
anyway, yah, so yes, i also love rich mullins. =D can you tell?
