If you don’t have freedom as a principle, you can never see a reason not to make an exception. There are constantly going to be times when for one reason or another there’s some practical convenience in making an exception. rms

"I want to buy a dress for my date" makes me think it is for the new boyfriend to wear. I hope she knows his taste well enough to make a good choice!

Also, where I'm from, when "cop" is used as a verb it means "steal", so "Cop a dress for my date" means, to me, "help me steal a dress for my date".
(Maybe that's why she's exciting).

Also, I just lol'd at "I have no idea in my mind".
That was pretty obvious from the get-go.

While reading through the list of threads on the front page today, I somehow read this one as "dress a cop for my date" and went o_O

No need to cop an attitude. (When the hell did "cop" become a verb, anyway?)

from m-w.com: perhaps from Dutch kapen to steal, from Frisian kāpia to buy; akin to Old High German kouf trade — more at cheap First Known Use: 1704

Wow! The more you know! Does that actually predate the use of "cop" to mean police officer?

it seems so. it is short for copper (police officer), and here is what m-w.com says about that:
Definition of COPPER : police officer Origin of COPPER First Known Use: 1846

Huh. I thought "cop" was an acronym for "Constable on Patrol". Maybe that was a backronym.

this has been a funny and informative (if not happy and exciting) thread! speaking of an informative thread, here is lesser-known definition of cop: "a cylindrical or conical mass of thread, yarn, or roving wound on a quill or tube; also : a quill or tube upon which it is wound" (not enough to make a dress.)
