It's already looking like 2011 is going to fine year of music for me, as three of my favorite bands have already indicated plans of having new albums out. The newly reunited Further Seems Forever apparently have a new album coming out in the Spring. Thrice and Explosions In The Sky have both said that they'll have new albums in 2011. The future is bright!

I didn't know Thrice was working on something new. Hopefully it's a little more cohesive than Beggars, which I liked, but which felt like a mere snack after The Alchemy Index.

A few albums that I was hoping would see the light of day in 2010 have been pushed back to 2011, most notably the new Fleet Foxes and Sixpence None the Richer's Strange Conversation. The latter was supposed to release last week, but got pushed back at the last minute. Feels like Divine Discontent all over again... I figure we'll see it in 2012.

On my "Meagerly Anticipated" list, Incubus and R.E.M. are scheduled to have new albums out next year as well. Also Michelle Branch's return to solo music, though that's also been in development hell for over a year. I'm willing to bet a few other artists rumored to be working on albums after a lengthy absence will get the punt to 2011 as this year wraps up as well.

Just got this Email, probably because I'm on the Steven Delopoulos mailing list:

Quote
Hi Friend,

Thanks for your continued support of Steven Delopolous and the newly reformed Burlap To Cashmere.  These are indeed exciting times!  As some of you may know, the band just recently signed a new recording contract with Jive Records.  Jive, we are happy to say, is also partnering with the fine folks at the Provident Label Group in Nashville to help release our new record.  We are currently in the studio in Santa Monica, CA with "legendary" producer Mitchell Froom.  Mitchell has worked on some of our favorite records by artists like Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits, Paul McCartney, Los Lobos, and Suzanne Vega.

We think we've got a great new team supporting us, but the most important member of our support team is you!  A band's lifeblood is their friends and fans.  We really could use your help in spreading the word about our reunion.  If you don't mind, please pass along the links below to some of your friends so that we can perhaps reconnect with old friends and maybe even make new ones...

Thanks again for all your support, help, and cooperation.  We appreciate it.!!!

Best,
Tom (Burlap's manager)

Hrm, Burlap to Cashmere caught up in Froom's tape-loop labyrinth. Could be interesting.

I also read somewhere that they are wanting to incorporate their heavier influences (Botch was mentioned specifically) into their next album. Should be interesting.

Looks like Panda Bear will prolly be 2011 :/  Also I know Mute Math is currently working on their 3rd album so that's a possibility.

Boo! If I made such a list, that would be somewhere around #2 or 3 for the albums I'm currently most anticipating.

Get excited.

http://whatweneedismusic.wordpress.com/2010/10/13/over-the-rhine-the-long-surrender-tracklisting/

I am actually inclined to say that this is my favorite Over the Rhine album ever. I say that about all of them, at least initially, but I've lived with this one for a little while now and suspect that its hold on my will only grow stronger.

Notes about the tracklisting: Songs #2 and #4 have lyrics penned by Joe Henry, and #13 is, befitting its title, an instrumental.

*highfive*

if I remember right, Kim wrote Days Like This in Los Angeles a couple years ago. the version she recorded on her Greatest Story EP has a different tone from the OtR version--it sounds to me like the bright but stark SoCal sky was making her feel lonely for her family back home. the OtR version feels to me more like the loved one is present on a perfect day.

A pretty cool tribute to Sufjan Stevens' Seven Swans album featuring Derek Webb, David Crowder Band, and strangely, The Gregory Brothers. http://pitchfork.com/news/40812-bonnie-prince-billy-leads-sufjan-tribute-album/

Could be interesting, but I've never heard of half these artists. I love that DCB is covering the dorkiest track. It somehow fits them perfectly.

I saw a Facebook post from Falling Up today hinting at a new album. Which is surprising, considering their breakup earlier this year. This comes days after the deadline for The River Empires' fundraising project passed without them gathering sufficient funds for their next album (which made me sad). So I'm wonder if Jessy is getting Falling Up back together to record an album so that the proceeds from that album (which would theoretically sell more since the name is more recognized) could help fund TRE's next effort.

I really wish TRE had gotten enough attention from their debut that this wouldn't be an issue, but they're a niche band in a world where word of mouth for indie bands who try to go viral is hit-and-miss. I figure they should wait to do their next album until they can do it right (and I'm fine waiting, since this seems a little soon after their debut, which was basically a double album to begin with).

Makes me wonder why they bothered announcing a breakup in the first place. An album release in 2011 would be right on schedule after Fangs!. Take that, other bands who are supposedly active but take 5 years to get a new album out.

Not that I'm complaining - I'm interested in a continuation to the story from Fangs!, if they choose to stick with that direction. (Then again, I secretly suspect that The River Empires' debut did continue that story.)

I thought it was kind of strange, as well. I can't remember if the article I saw gave a reason for that or not. I would go back and search for it, but that website tried to give my computer a virus this morning.

I don't recall a reason, either. I just assumed creative restlessness on Jessy's part compared to what the other guys in the band wanted to do, possibly combined with a fanbase that was steadily losing interest. I was rather fascinated by the growth on their last two albums, but that took time to appreciate, and I could see why the larger crop of Christian music fans moved on once they turns up the synths and sci-fi and scaled back the rawk. The downside of creative growth is that you can't always sustain a large enough fanbase to continue supporting yourself, which can lead to misgivings when people in the band realize they're gonna have to work two jobs. Jessy seems like the kind of guy who will go broke for his art if that's what it takes (he basically sold his possessions to fund the first River Empires album), but I don't know how the other guys in the band felt about doing that.

Jessy just posted a video to The River Empires' Facebook page saying they will still record their album with a smaller budget. So it looks like he's going to juggle both bands for the time being. Which is probably fine if they're only playing shows locally in Oregon... but seriously, dude, tell your bandmates to get dayjobs.

Obviously that's just something she said to the fans and didn't mean literally.  Nonetheless I'm looking forward to it and hope it's good.

It'll still get repeated to the point where it does ridiculous things to expectations. Especially when an article quotes it as the headline, which is all some folks will see. Not that it's her fault people will take things out of context, but still.

Same here. Every time an artist I like makes that sort of a claim, unless it's stated in such an over-the-top way that it's obvious (like Five Iron Frenzy calling "Pootermobile" the greatest song ever written or something like that), I get really irritated with them - more so than if it were an artist I did not like.

Falling Up is now officially funded to make their new album. I'd been meaning to get around to helping them out on Kickstarter, forgot about it, then noticed today that they were almost done, so I shored up the gap for 'em and left a note saying that I hoped this helped to get The River Empires' album made as well.

From Sherwood's Wikipedia page:

Quote
Despite rumors of a breakup, Sherwood recently announced at a show that the band would continue on and to expect a new album in the summer of 2011.

Phew. There's been this nasty trend lately of bands breaking up right after I finally started to get into them.

I'm glad to hear that. Sherwood have yet to make an album that I love as a whole, but there's always 3 or 4 songs that I love. I know they've got that special album in them, though.
