I'm sure everyone has heard by now of the major (8.9!) earthquake in Japan. Please keep everyone involved in your prayers, and if you live on the West coast, make sure you're well above sea level.

I first heard about this from someone in Japan, in a chat room, before it made international headlines. At the time, it was reported to be "only" a 7.9.  Now they're saying it's a 9.1.

What's really bizarre is that I was thinking about earthquakes for no particular reason on the night of March 10, as I headed upstairs after watching my usual Thursday sitcoms (which had nothing to do with earthquakes). Then I turned on the computer and BOOM - breaking news about the Japan quake. It was eerie.

I'm flabbergasted that Japan is still reeling from this nuclear crisis several weeks down the road. It's also given me a bit of insight into how easily the self-preservation instinct kicks in, making people extremely far away wonder, "Could it affect me?" and having that overtake compassion for the people it is already affecting. I haven't bought into the paranoia that some on the West Coast have, but I do feel genuinely sorry for those within a certain radius of the plant whose livelihoods - to say nothing of their health, potentially - have been completely disrupted and will probably never be the same. To me, that's more horrifying than seeing footage of tsunami-ravaged towns where thousands of people were buried alive.
