I've been thinking about the future of the pub, and the way we share music here at the phorum. It's become inactive, obviously, as the site has become less active. I also think much of it may also be redundant with some of the apps and websites many of us here use. So, I'll use this thread to perhaps give the community a much-needed shot in the arm and extend an invitation to follow me on Grooveshark and Spotify (which is where I'm at right now). I'm iceybloop in both of them, and both of these sites have an advantage in that they are free (or, at least, have a version that is).

Grooveshark is probably the easiest to use of the two since they aren't doing the false scarcity b.s. that Spotify is on about right now, and requires no client to be downloaded since it's web-based.

Spotify is new in the U.S., and it will become more available I'm sure (right now, it's invite-only). If you aren't interested in using facebook (hi Vlad), but you still want to be social on the site (sort of the purpose of this thread), just type in spotify:user:iceybloop in your regular web browser and select the Spotify client to follow me on that site. I'm not sure how one enables the social aspect for themselves (without just connecting it to fb), but maybe it is enabled just by following people. IDK - educate me.

Of course, there are more sites than just these two, so if anyone has any further suggestions, I'm open to them. I just know that both MOG and Rdio aren't free for long.

From there, we can direct people to things in our playlists that may be interesting to them, and even discuss them as a group.

I'm not doing anything with the pub for right now, btw. If you have a local band or something you'd like to share that isn't on these services, feel free to continue uploading there. I just think it may be redundant for much of what we used to do with it.

I just got a message saying someone on Grooveshark loves me. Thanks, bloop.  Embarrassed

Most of what I've uploaded to Grooveshark is obscure Christian and/or so-indie-it-isn't-even-national music to fill out entries from my personal soundtracks that I couldn't find on YouTube, or from other Grooveshark users. I'm willing to bet you could use Grooveshark to share those "local bands" without it being an issue - there'd be no major record label to complain and demand that the recordings be taken down. But I guess if you want to be kind about it, check with the band first... chances are they'll appreciate the free publicity.

I haven't gotten around to making playlists for my soundtracks or anything because I don't think I could cobble together a complete one from Grooveshark, YouTube, or Spotify alone. So I've handled this by providing individual links to each song, wherever it can be found (and often they're live versions on YouTube), as I've blogged about them on Facebook. Most of the blogs are personal anecdotes about the songs that probably no one will care about except me when I'm old and brain-addled, so I'm up for considering alternative means of porting the playlists for others to hear. (Though most of the older ones, trust me, you won't.)

What's with this "false scarcity"?

By making it invite-only, and trickling out the invites the way they are, it creates a scarcity that doesn't need to be, and is entirely manufactured. A lot of sites have been doing this: Google+ is another recent example. I'm not sure it's the best way to roll it out.

I have yet to upload anything on Grooveshark. I'm a little scared to.

I've been invited to Google+ numerous times, but have yet to accept. Despite this, I have one particular friend whose Google+ status posts keep showing up in my inbox. She has no idea why this is happening, but it has its advantages, I guess... she was inadvertently the first one to tell me the news about Amy Winehouse, for example.

Worst that'll happen is that you'll get your upload privileges suspended, and any offending uploads deleted. Unlikely to be an issue if you keep it obscure (which generally won't happen if you stick to stuff you can't already find to give someone a free listen to somewhere on the web).

At the very beginning I mean, Google+ played hard-to-get, which gave it a certain perceived desirability. Spotify is following a similar course.

G+ is a nice site, btw, but I think it'll be hard to overcome the fb juggernaut.

My attitude about it is the same as it used to be about Facebook: I'm sure it's great and all, but I only see it being practically useful for me if it steals enough traffic away from my current social network of choice that it starts to feel like a bit of a ghost town. I don't really want to have to set up a new account somewhere else and then figure out where to post which items, or double post them all and risk annoying folks who are on both. That's not so much loyalty to Facebook, as it is laziness.

Set up Ukulele Songs by Eddie Vedder on Grooveshark. Not surprisingly, it's kind of like Binaural's last penultimate track, and I find it rather charming (also, I just really like the sound of a ukulele).

If that time eventually comes, lots of people have made nice apps to essentially import your facebook account to g+
