"Stars"

Somehow, when night falls, we always feel
the impulse to look upward and wonder.
There are a million more than the
highest number, and trillion more
than that.

They are stars--or other men's suns--
and though too far to reach, the
imagination won't be silenced
underneath such dim and
all-important light.

The messages are unreturned, but
feeble flares on such a
mountain! Who would recognize them?

You might, I think--I hope.
And at night, when the stars are
thundering their deep music, I dare
to think that someday
I will reach you,

and perhaps settle amidst
your many fires.
