I picked up O, the debut album from Irish singer/songwriter Damien Rice yesterday. Man... what a lovely record.

I haven't had time to really dig into the lyrics yet, but the music is beautiful. Rice's voice reminds me a bit of Jeff Buckley, though without the stunning range. The arrangements are sparse, and yet they create a big, full sound. Most songs consist of Rice playing acoustic guitar, accompanied only by a cello and a female background vocalist whose name escapes me, but her voice is gorgeous.

Anyway, great record. Rice is my favorite new artist of the year. Anyone else heard him?

No, but it sounds interesting. I'll have to add him to my list of "need to hear" music.

How would you compare him to Joseph Arthur, Josh? Or would you?

His album is more interesting, musically, than Arthur's latest, in my opinion.

If you wanna sample/download something off of O, try "Volcano," "I Remember," or "Eskimo," just so you get an idea about...

heck... download the whole thing.  Then buy.

Peace out,
Andree

By the way, Josh... what convinced you to give it a chance?

I disagree. This album is beautiful, but Arthur's is more diverse and eclectic, more experimental, and much more accessible. And Arthur is a MUCH better songwriter.

I'd say that the key songs here are "Volcano," "Cold Water," and "Cheers Darling," but every song is a winner.

I bought it on a whim. I was at the store buying the new Bowie album yesterday, saw Damien Rice on sale for 12 bucks, remembered you raving about him, and decided to go for it.

So... can any of you O fans explain to me what an "eskimo friend" is?

Can any of you Wilco fans explain what an American aquarium drinker is?

I don't remember ever having a Wilco thread.

We need one.

And Damien Rice fans, I'm still interested in your interpretation of that song.  =)

An eskimo friend is simply someone you can look to when you're down.

If you're feeling sad and blue and you feel like you can confide in me, then I become your eskimo friend.  Simple as that.

Yeah, I figured that much out, but why call such a friend an Eskimo? Why not call them a Cherakee friend?
