Did anybody actually see this movie when it was in theaters? Ours didn't even get it, but I watched it yesterday on video at my aunt's house while babysitting. Brett slept through most of it, but while he was awake I couldn't really focus on it, so I'm planning on renting it on DVD next week. But regardless, I think Martin Scorsese deserved to have his butt kissed at the Oscars more than anybody else. (Besides maybe U2...)

Can't say I was all that interested in seeing it, myself. It may sound hypocritical given my praise of Road to Perdition, which is probably somewhat similar, but whereas RTP was remarkably restrained and artfully done for a movie with that setting, I am skeptical about how well GONY does in that area. I'd be open to seeing it, but there are so many other movies that I feel better deserve my time, I'd be OK with passing on it if the opportunity doesn't come up.

I can understand that. It might come across a bit heavy-handed in trailers and such, not to mention the academy loves that sort of thing and Gangs did get a billion nominations. I have a feeling it's also a very acquired taste, given the subject matter.

There is one scene, though, that I would consider to be one of the finest I've ever seen, during which three men are all praying to the same God, at the same time in very different settings and with very different motivations. The contrast is amazing and it's almost scary to think that it's accurate, that we all have our on personal spin on God's character.

But anyway, I think that particular scene would probably be of interest to quite a few people here, but not much more than that. Again, acquired taste.

Yeah, I saw it when it was in theaters.  Um.......

........I was disappointed, actually.  For a while, the movie hypes you up to what you would expect to be a grande finale.....and then it's just over.  Just like that.  It also seemed like there were parts of the movie that were missing or something....I felt it a tad incomplete.  (That's one of my pet peeves.)  I don't think DiCaprio, Diaz, or Neeson captured the essence of their roles very well.  I didn't feel like the nude and crude scenes were necessary.  (It was also way too long.)  The plot wasn't very captivating either.

That being said, I think Daniel Day-Lewis did a superb job in his role.  You just want to strangle the guy sometimes....but you know he does good when his personality grabs at you so much, that you end up loving the bad guy.  lol.  The set, the gloominess (a la "Road To Perdition"), and the flow of the movie make the story come to life.  And of course, the gruesome fighting scenes are cringe-worthy, but of course realistic.

Overall though, the positives weren't enough to outweight the negatives.  I left the theater thinking, "I can't believe I wasted my money on this."

MHO of course.

I fell asleep 45 minutes into the second disc. It would've been a good film, but like others have said, it was a bit heavy-handed, and it took far too long to get where it wanted to be...

Haven't seen it, but by the looks of it, I think my response to it would be simliar to my response to Road to Perdition. With that film, that setting was intriguing, but the actual story was ho-hum.
